Penelope Khounta has produced an astonishing, intensely personal account of her life with an educated, sophisticated Lao official whose life was nearly destroyed by the Communist takeover in 1975. The pages of her book evoke the time of a Lao king and princes in a country struggling against overwhelming disadvantages to accommodate to the modern world. They also reveal, however, in a clear but very understated way, the story of a courageous, resourceful woman struggling, during a time of great tragedy and turmoil, to protect her family, to rescue her husband's self-esteem, to nurture and educate her children and ultimately to cope with overwhelming loss and grief. Penelope's account is straightforward, lucid and readable. The one inescapable conclusion left for the reader is that the author is a remarkable woman, intelligent, tenacious, adaptable and indeed heroic.
Penny's memoir is not only a fascinating chronicle of love (and war) in Laos from 1965 to the present; it reveals an extraordinary person who spent 30 years of complete devotion to her husband and their marriage, while taking jobs from Laos to Spain to Iran to the U.S. to successfully raise their children and set them on happy and fulfilling lives. Penny kept her family together in incredibly difficult circumstances, and she still is using those skills to live a rich and rewarding life, both in Laos and her childhood home, where she unsuspectingly began her remarkable life journey by joining the Peace Corps in the early 60s. Her readers are lucky that she published the book written for her children!
I thoroughly enjoyed reading Mrs. Khounta's memoir. An extraordinary life to be sure! I felt honored to be allowed to listen in on the family history she conveys to her children, and hope that they can appreciate the lengths to which their mother and father went to assure they had the very best of opportunities to live happy and successful lives. Her patient learning curve to understand and respect Lao culture is evident, and I especially enjoyed reading about Penny's early experiences in Laos when most Americans had no idea what or where Laos was. What an adventurous and courageous woman!This story has it all: adventure, excitement, love, joy, loss, introspection, personal growth, and a love of learning and travel. An inspiring read.
Looking for a romantic tale by someone who came into a very different culture and overcame all obstacles, on the way to a fairy tale marriage, then "Love Began in Laos" isn't for you. However, if you want to read something beautifully written, candid and nuanced in describing the small victories and frustrations that come with moving from a comfortable life in the United States to Southeast Asia, and then on to various other locations, then I highly recommend this book. The author reminds us that not all cultural chasms can be bridged, but yet love and caring can survive.

I gave it 5 stars for it's authenticity and engaging journey. A young independent outgoing woman falls in love with an introverted engineer. Opposites attract.
Enjoyed reading about that era. There were many familiar names and places. The life as an expat imbedded in Lao society was interesting.
