I have followed this since it happened. I lived in Riverside, CA and Bellingham, WA. The Author did an excellent job of putting it all together. Would recommend this for anyone who loves a great thriller.

this author is great!!!! i've stopped reading as i got older, but i'm able to read her books without a problem

A City Owned was submitted to Rosie's Review Team list, but after I'd read it I had to read the second book, too; thus, I am reviewing them as one. This two part series, Murder by Increments, is about the crimes of the Hillside Stranglers, Kennth Bianchi and Angelo Buono, who made LA a frightening place to be in the late 1970s. The first book, A City Owned, starts with a picture of what LA was like back then. Such a clever way to start; to understand the lives of the victims and why Bianchi and Buono went undiscovered for so long, we have first to be aware of the culture of the time. LA was a seedy place indeed, peopled by many who'd arrived seeking the Hollywood dream, only to be sucked into the underworld of prostitution, porn, drugs and crime. The cops were overworked and jaded, with few resources; these were the days before the internet, before reliable criminal profiling, and before DNA databases. Reading how carelessly they bungled the investigations, over and over again, made me think that crime solving had moved on very little in the hundred years since the London police tried in vain to identify Jack the Ripper.O J Modjeska writes the stories of the victims as artfully as any good character drama novelist; each one comes alive on the page. These are not just names, and the book is far from being just a list of heinous crimes. Only towards the end of the book do Bianchi and Buono themselves appear, and by then I had to know the whole story; I went back to Amazon and bought Killing Cousins as soon as I'd finished A City Owned.I found Killing Cousins the most absorbing of the two books, as I am more interested in the psychological background of killers than the solving of crimes. The drawn out trial was at times farcical, not only because of Bianchi's attempts to convince psychiatrists that he suffered from Multiple Personality Disorder, but because of the self-interest and prejudice of many involved.'There were the cops who thought the lives of prostitutes were worthless, the officials who wanted to look good in front of the media, the shrinks seeking professional recognition, the prosecutors who assumed middle-aged women were crazy, and the politicians seeking office. There was stupidity, there was self-aggrandizement, there was sexism and the tyranny of the herd.'This two-book series is everything that true crime should be, without being in any way sensationalised. O J Modjeska has not only written a riveting account of the victims, perpetrators and law enforcement bodies, but also shown how very different attitudes in general were, only forty years ago; if just a few incidents had not taken place, a few people not spoken up, if a few jurors been swayed by the individuals who defended these two monsters, the outcome might have been very different.

In the fascinating second part of Murder by Increments we go deeper into the life and mind of the serial killers known as the Hillside Stranglers, and see what happens when they come up against the workings of the US justice system. We meet little Kenny and his unbelievable mother, the many professionals who did nothing about the shocking treatment of the poor little bedwetting boy, his strangely alluring sadist cousin who ran orgies out of his suburban loungeroom, the psychiatrist who believed in “alter” personality Steve, the police who were almost helpless against the workings of the court system, and the women who loved these gruesome men and had children with them. You have to conclude they were all mad. There are so many issues here: why was Ken’s mother allowed to keep custody of him? What is the rightful power of parents over their helpless children? Is nurture really responsible for the production of violent psychopaths? And how is it that a runaway sixteen year old girl from a “good” family can end up a sex-slave servicing hundreds of clients in an established neighbourhood? Well, part of the answer is obvious once you realize that among the clients were men in high positions, one a City Councillor and another the Police Chief of Huntington Park. The depths of the barely disguised social depravity at that time and place are hard to fathom. Then there is a question which is almost unthinkable. Why did so many girls and women LOVE these men? One sixteen year old girl was so crazy about Angelo that she pedalled round to his place on her bicycle after school to watch porn movies and eat popcorn while clients were being serviced by the two sex-slaves in the adjacent room. She told police she loved Angelo and hoped to marry him.Kelli Boyd, a classy blonde secretary at a place Ken worked, began a relationship with him and became pregnant almost at once. Even knowing what a shit he was, she went ahead with the birth and moved in with him, becoming a mother while Ken continued to go on killing sprees with cousin Angelo. She stayed loyal to him for a very long time even after she knew he was one of the Hillside Stranglers. Then there is the ambitious psychiatrist who wanted to prove Ken was a “multiple” because it would be good for his career, even though it might mean Ken would go free, and Katherine Maden, Angelo’s defence attorney, who argued that violent sexual sadism was merely one aspect of a common lifestyle choice found widely in LA at the time, unfortunately in this case going a bit too far.And how do you account for the thousands of women who sent love letters to the two men while they were in prison convicted of these vicious crimes? Both found new and loving wives although it was clear they would never get out. Ken became something of a celebrity writer, authoring horror novels in the vein of Lovecraft.Written in the gripping style Modjeska is so praised for, this book brings forward many new and unexpected angles on American society in the seventies. It allows the “facts”, such as they are known, to speak for themselves and moves along like an edge-of-the-seat thriller. Anyone interested in murder, gender and the justice system will get so much admittedly horrifying insight from these two books. Both are outstanding.

The Tigress of Forli: Renaissance Italy's Most Courageous and Notorious Countess, Caterina Riario Sforza de' Medici, by Elizabeth Lev

Review

An engrossing biography of one of Renaissance Italy’s most accomplished powerbrokers. Few people were better able to navigate the sea of shifting alliances and internecine squabbles that characterized 15th-century Italy than Caterina Sforza (1463–1509). All the more remarkable is that she was able to do it in an era when all of her rivals were men. Widowed by three husbands—two of them assassinated before her eyes—Sforza ruled over the province of Forlì as regent for her young son Ottaviano, and was reviled, admired and feared in equal measure by popes, foreign powers and her own subjects alike. Lev (Art History/Duquesne Univ.) deftly explores the psychological strains endured by the Countess, from her first marriage to a diffident and cowardly nephew of Pope Sixtus IV, to the murder of her beloved second husband and the merciless vengeance she took upon the conspirators, to her heroic and single-handed defense of her city from the Venetians and her ultimate imprisonment in the dungeons of Cesare Borgia. The author writes with a light touch and an eye for the pageantry and drama of the time—her subject was known as one of the best-dressed women in Italy—while colorfully recounting weighty affairs of state. In one memorable scene, Sforza gains the upper hand negotiating a military alliance with a young Machiavelli: "While Machiavelli had thought the seduction of Catarina was complete, she made it clear that the courtship was only beginning. Stung by his misreading of the situation, he showed his shock and hurt through both his words and gestures, betraying his inexperience. Only later would Machiavelli learn to conceal his true thoughts behind a mask of wit and irony."An inspiring tale of the courage and fortitude of an enigmatic and indomitable woman."--Kirkus Reviews

From the Inside Flap

"A rich, nuanced portrait of a highly controversial beauty and military leader, and her violent albeit glittering Italian Renaissance milieu."--"Publishers Weekly" A strategist to match Machiavelli; a warrior who stood toe to toe with the Borgias; a wife whose three marriages would end in bloodshed and heartbreak; and a mother determined to maintain her family's honor, Caterina Riario Sforza de' Medici was a true Renaissance celebrity, beloved and vilified in equal measure. In this dazzling biography, Elizabeth Lev illuminates her extraordinary life and accomplishments. Raised in the court of Milan and wed at age ten to the pope's corrupt nephew, Caterina was ensnared in Italy's political intrigues early in life. After turbulent years in Rome's papal court, she moved to the Romagnol province of Forli. Following her husband's assassination, she ruled Italy's crossroads with iron will, martial strength, political savvy, and an icon's fashion sense. In finally losing her lands to the Borgia family, she put up a resistance that inspired all of Europe and set the stage for her progeny--including Cosimo de' Medici--to follow her example to greatness. A rich evocation of Renaissance life, "The Tigress of Forli" reveals Caterina Riario Sforza as a brilliant and fearless ruler, and a tragic but unbowed figure.

This is a story that holds the interest. The political schemes, wars, and assassinations of that era are covered in detail, often with the horror and suspense which medieval cruelty and duplicity invite. As a writer of talent, this author brings the characters to life with an abundance of details which one cannot find elsewhere. Moreover, her use of adjectives is masterful, so precise and evocative that I cannot refrain from complimenting the author on their use. This biographer has chosen a historical episode and a leading character of great interest. Caterina of Forli was certainly courageous and resourceful during the multitudinous and perilous changes of fortune which characterized the Italy of that time. She also proved as devious and unsparing as any of the male rulers, faced as she was by the many enemies of her family. Following the assassination of her beloved second husband, for instance, she destroyed the conspirators and even their families with great cruelty. She will be remembered forever, however, for her defiance of the Borgia pope and his ruthless son Cesare. The author triumphs in telling the story of the assault on the fortress at Forli and the capture of a woman unbowed by the fortunes of war. By contrast, the indifference of her elder sons to her imprisonment and suffering, their cupidity, their ambition for higher positions in the Church while making no effort to help her are both shocking and disgusting. You will not find a more complete recounting of these tragic events than in this history of a valiant woman fighting against all the hardships of medieval Italy. After her capture by the terrible Cesare Borgia, I had to pause often before continuing with this record of the indignities and suffering inflicted on this woman.I recommend this biography to anyone seeking history related in an interesting way. This biographer, moreover, provides an extra benefit by adding to the book a brief account of the career and death of Caterina's youngest son, the great warrior Giovanni dalle Bande Nere.

I have always loved and been fascinated by powerful women, both in history and in fiction. I'm especially fascinated by these sorts of women who lived in eras where their lives were highly circumscribed. As the saying goes "well behaved women seldom make history". It's a shame because history is filled with great women of strength, resilience and resourcefulness and their names need to be better known. To be honest, I actually came across the amazing and wily Catarina Sforza while watching Showtime's 'The Borgias' (my guilty Jeremy Irons pleasure). As I watched this powerful reddish-gold haired virago lift her skirts and taunt the army of Cesare Borgia by pointing at her genitals and telling him that she could make more sons (a story that was highly embellished by Machiavelli who was NOT a fan of hers), I thought, this woman's real story has GOT to be pretty darn interesting and fact actually pales in comparison to fiction. She was, even to her detractors, a remarkable woman who literally went toe to toe with the incredibly dangerous Borgia clan alone.Catarina Riario Sforza de Medici was in short, one hell of a woman. Elegant, cultured, literate, a fighter, a huntress, a tactician, a healer, a mother and a very beautiful and forceful woman. She often stood alone, fighting for her family's legacy and her right to exist in a Renaissance Italy which alliances shifted on the winds and death was a mere heartbeat away. She could also be very stubborn and make serious errors in judgment. Be that as it may, Catarina took control of her life in ways that were quite rare for that time period. Far from perfect, she was a woman determined to be in charge of her destiny.

Excellent historical account of a woman born before her time. It is written in a very readable style and it was hard for me to put down. I selected this for a book club reading and selfishly, I wanted to read something prior to a planned extensive trip to Italy. My desire, after reading “Leonardo”, was to find a book about women in that period to get some perspective on women’s roles in that time. This was a wonderful choice and while she is perhaps not typical of the time, her story was well worth reading. I love how Elizabeth Lev humanized Catarina—she did not sugar coat her flaws and mistakes, nor did she dwell too much on her victories. The result was the feeling of reading about a REAL woman and not a lionized historical myth. Our book club read “Leonardo” prior to this selection and we all could criticized that piece by saying that although the book was informative and readable, it did nothing to humanize a great man. This account of this historical figure gave well documented and referenced historical accounts, but also made you realize you were learning about a real person—-not some myth. Our trip to Italy, after reading this book, warranted a stop in Imola and Forli, to further explore the life of this incredible woman.

Excellent book. I will use it as a text book for a class I am teaching about the Italian Renaissance. I think one of the merits of the author is that she writes an historically rich biography with a very good narrative. She is able to unravel the complex context of 15th century Italian politics with clarity and order, highlighting the continuously changing alliances that produced (and maintained?)the balance of power during the last decades of the century. The challenge posed by this genre is to please both the informed reader, who is looking for historically precise detail, and the lay reader who will get lost in those details. In my opinion, Lev was able to balance historical precision and narrative's necessities fairly well. As an historian, I referred to her footnotes often in order to understand her sources and judge her historical trustworthiness. Some details were simply too 'intimate' for me to buy their authenticity. In the end, it is thanks to artistic and historical license that the best stories come to life, making history enjoyable for all!

It was initially intended to be Stu Ungar's autobiography, and "Stuey" is quoted throughout. No reader is excluded from the card-related parts of the story because there are easy-to-follow descriptions of how gin and other games are played. The details of the most famous legends, e.g. Bob Stupak's challenge, and the time Stuey called a massive all-in bet with ten-high and won --are here.Stu Ungar had *flaming* 24-karat ACA symptoms such as guessing what normal behavior is, addiction to risk, being impulsive, being unable to take care of himself, and unexpected strong emotional reactions (outbursts). Throughout his childhood, he spent his time in activities that were not typical for his age. I think he internalized the beatings by his father as negative self-feelings.Constant turmoil was normal to him. When everything was going OK and he had his own bed to sleep in, he seemed to find that more unsettling. As the authors put it, "He was desperate for approval." And to quote Don McNamee (p. 242), "His main problem was that he always needed instant gratification." And as Stu himself said, "See, I'm the most loyal person in the world." Those are all classic ACA symptoms.I was surprised at the extent and authenticity of his mafia connections; that was no b.s.He was an action-junkie who repeatedly lost what money he had by betting on sports, horse races, pit games, golf, you-name-it.It cannot be overemphasized how well written this book is, especially by today's crummy standards. There are very few typos. Use of the correct word is demonstrated as an art form. There's even an index. I was dumbfounded by a couple of these reader-reviews that criticized the writing.

There is nothing not to like because coming in you are not expecting something huge like William Manchester's Biography of Churchill. The book very much keeps your interest, assuming the subject interests you.Stuey Ungar was a genius in the sense that he was practically born playing cards like Picasso was born drawing pictures or Mozart was born playing the piano. He ran afoul of drugs and was not good at managing money but these kinds of issues were the flip side of his strength, he was like a guy who always drove with his high beams on and his foot to the floor and pretty single minded, he liked to gamble. One nice line, Page 76, "Stuey wasn't a con man or a hustler; he was an assassin". Meaning that he would not throw a game and so lost out on some good money, if he paced himself more gamblers would have taken him on and he would have made more money but he couldn't pace himself. I recommend this book.

This book held my attention. Fascinating tale of a good guy caught up in the gambling world of Las Vegas. Sad to witness his downward spiral and great losses due to gambling. What a sad ending for one who seemed to be a smart and caring guy struck down by his gambling addiction.

This book about Stuey "The Kid" Ungar is a fast-paced read about a poker prodigy. Before 'Hold 'em hit the scene, Stuey played Gin and became a young expert at card playing. It was said that his memory was photographic. This book shares the story of Stuey who lived life as a hard core gambler. All of life was a gamble to him and he took every opportunity in life to wager. His life experience was so far removed from the regular life that you and I might be living--paying bills and earning an honest wage.Stuey lived hard in all aspects: gambling, sex and drugs. He rubbed shoulders and was mentored by the mob and some of Vegas' biggest names like Doyle Brunson and a the Binions. Reading this book will allow you to see the life "The Kid" lived in NYC and Las Vegas. If you love books about Las Vegas and the game of Hold 'em as well as exciting stories about gambling--Stu Ungar's story will not disappoint.

Stu Unger was, by far, the greatest to ever play the game of poker. At the same time, like Fisher, he was consumed and obsessed by it with no room left in his life for anything else. This, perhaps, is the price someone pays for greatness. If you have ever been even semi serious about the game of poker, you will appreciate and understand the insights into the mind and character of this poker genius. (By the way, there's no comparison between this book and the movie that was made about Stu Unger's life. This book is 1,000 times better. The movie only gives a surface view of Stu Unger's life without any insight into what made him tick. In addition, it was inaccurate in some of what it presented.)

This is a well told rags to riches to rags story that is the biography of Stu Unger - Gin player and Poker player extraordinaire. This book is based upon interviews with Unger himself, as well as those that knew him best - family, friends, and those that sat across the green felt from this WSOP champ. It is an excellent book, but very depressing - not the fault of the writers, but because they do such an excellent job of making the reader see the turmoil that existed within this exceptional individual
