Asset Management is useful because it provides a good background on "factors" that are persistent over the long-term and it promotes portfolio rebalancing. But, these are really old ideas for serious students of finance. In addition, the book fails on practical implementation, especially for individual investors that do not have tens of millions of dollars to invest (institutional investors or portfolio managers of high net worth individuals hopefully already know these concepts). For example, a portfolio that is long value and short growth is necessary to exploit the value premium. But, this strategy already poses several problems for the individual investor. First, as an individual investor, you have to be willing and able to short stocks. That's asking the individual to increase his/her leverage, which some may not be comfortable with. If investing in stocks is like gambling, this strategy is like doubling-down on your bet. The author acknowledges a long only value portfolio will not yield high returns. Second, there is no guidance on which value stocks and which growth stocks do you have to invest in. Even if there were guidance, this poses several problems for the individual investor. The first is the access to market data and fundamental data, which could be expensive and/or time-consuming to collect. Then, even if you have access to the data, you need to have the analytical skills to identify which stocks you would select. Finally, you would have to balance out transactions costs, so you have to be selective in picking which stocks and the number of stocks that you would go long and short. Third, portfolio rebalancing is an easy concept to implement if you have two index funds: one equity and one fixed income. However, if you have a portfolio with more than two assets, there is no guidance on which asset you should sell if you want to reduce exposure to a particular factor and which asset you should buy if you want to increase exposure to a particular factor. In the case of the long value and short growth, which of the stocks should I rebalance with including consideration for transactions costs?

I can't say how much I enjoyed reading this book. "Enjoy" is probably not the word because 600 pages is quite a slog !. But I was thoroughly pleased with the content, and I would say it has given me a very complete and well-documented update on theory and practice.The book provides a very complete overview of the entire field of investing, and its evolution over the past 40-50 years. Ang gives a thorough review of the main asset classes, the development of financial theory and above all, a (relatively brief) overview of the emerging field of factor investing and its foundation in theory. Brief, but enough to understand the theory and application.Ang offers a very critical view of theory and approaches to investing and shows with reference to many ( a huge amount in fact ) academic studies how the CAPM and mean-variance investing are no longer adequate as an explanation of markets. He is also very critical of the claims of Hedge Funds and Private Equity to superior performance and convincingly proves how on a risk-adjusted basis, they offer no alpha. He has very interesting insights on commodities, and real estate investing and also debunks their claim to be inflation hedges.Although taking its point of departure from theory, and academic studies, Ang does a great job of helping the reader with interesting practical details and quite a few anecdotes, and of course, concrete examples of model portfolios.Grateful to Andrew Ang for taking the time to write such a fascinating book, and after finishing I felt like I had taken a 6-month course on modern financial theory and practice. It is also good to see that he now heads an important division in Blackrock where many of his ideas in factor investing are being implemented through a series of new ETFs which he has created there.Can't recommend this book too much to those in the field of investing.

Great book with tons of insights in the world of asset allocation. Different perspective.

A very practical approach to investments. Reviews brilliantly some of the new literature on factor analysis. Highly recommended for professionals on the field and common investors that could use several of the new financial products out there. If you are a technical guy you will need to complement the book.

The best one in terms of how comprehensive and relevant it is to asset management today.

A good summary of contemporary research into investment theory. The author's basic thesis is that investments and portfolios should understood as a bundle of factors rather than under their rubrics of stocks, bonds, private equity, etc. His chapter on private equity as a supposed asset class is alone worth the cost of the book. Quite readable given the subject matter.

Ah. So It has a name. That feeling that follows us through years and years, that keeps eating at us and deteriorating our life. At first you double the efforts to keep on functioning and achieving ("put your back into it!"). Some achievements come with that. But you feel increasingly drained, fearful of disasters and failure (which can lead you smack into some of them btw), and just so gd tired. And weirdly empty, disconnected and phony even to yourself. Soooo.... bit by bit you keep on trying to quench that nagging dissatisfied thirst with... well, just plain more. More work. More "fun" (a world of problems here, none of them fun at all). More money. More shoes. And always thinking "when I get that new (i) car (ii) job (iii) promotion (iv) title (v) ring etc etc etc, I'll feel better. More serene and real. I'll find "my" place, where I "belong"".One therapist once told me that this sounded like "when I grow up...". I never forgot that.This book is important. To me, it was an absolute revelation.If you identify with anything I wrote above, check this book out. It brings an almost immediate feeling of relief. What happens after the first eureka moment is up to each one of us and our individual stories. But, as a group, it's like realizing your symptons are documented and part of a disease that afflicts a lot of people and not just you - and which CAN be treated; which has nothing to do with your real identity.And that place? Where we belong? It's right there inside each of us, patiently waiting for us to come back. I'm trying to find my own way back, and this book was the most precise and clearest "guide" I found so far. For the first time in my life, I feel like I'm on my way. Using the right road and all. At the right pace.I do wish I had come across this before. But then again, time and place for everything, right?

My second time around for this one--a little less challenging this time, but so very appropriate and the beginning of healing--and I am an old (81) lady now. Much of my shame was self-imposed, not following my own moral/ethical rules and shaming my self.

Bradshaw writes a compelling book on the inner tormentor that has poisoned and ruled so many of our lives.From a genuine and soul-affirming account of the author's own personal childhood shaming trauma, to treatises on how shame develops psychologically, to chapters of how to combat and console wounded characters, to a (too) brief treatise on the numinous and spiritual, Bradshaw covers nicely the various facets of what it means to be shamed toxically, and how to recover and even thrive.Whether for personal self-help, or to learn perhaps academically on the topic, or even as an aide to therapists and their ilk, I highly recommend this book as an eye-opener on this "daimonic" (all-encompassing) facet of life.

Bradshaw's book is a fantastic one, second only to Alice Miller's book, "Prisoners of Childhood". When I realized that this was the same person who was on public television talking about healing the child within, I knew that I had to read this book. I could so relate to his stories about shame that the book made me want to cry. Anyone who is struggling with an addiction from alcohol, drugs, sex, food will be able to relate to this book. I am dealing now with a husband who is overly critical and I was searching for ways to deal with his difficult behaviours. I photocopied Bradshaw's seven tips for dealing with critical people. He states that these people are really shame based and deal with their own shame by shaming and judging others. This makes perfect sense to me. I used one of his strategies one time when my husband blew his top and started being negative and critical of me. I decided to use the "cofusing strategy" which involves using a word that you make up to throw your critic off the track and confuse them so they do not know how to respond. Instead of reacting in anger to his negative remarks, I replied calmly, " How perspicacious of you dear to understand me so well! He looked confounded and confused and then, with a defeated look on his face, he admitted, " You always use these big words that I don't understand." Ha, ha! I managed to avoid an argument because he didn't know whether he'd been complimented or insulted! It put me back in control!

I love John Bradshaw's book on recovery. I have many of them. They helped a lot during my recovery from childhood. I recommend this book to all my friends.

Re-reading this knowing what I know, I feel frustrated at this book. While I think there are quite a few insights especially those who have a history of child abuse, this book heavily clings on this the idea that shame is the problem. And it is this toxic shame that needs to turn into healthy shame in order for things to get better. It seems to do that through using CBT methods where if changing thoughts will help change behavior. The author also seems heavily influenced by the 12 step method.Personally, I feel the author is too bias with 1. his personal experience using the 12 step program and 2. this sense of shame as the core reason. Instead, I urge people who are thinking of buying this book to instead do their own reach on CPTSD and DTD (developmental trauma disorder). I believe a lot of child abuse problems in adults is fuel through the fight/flight/freeze system and through working on the trauma side, will be far more beneficial.

About the Author

In 1989, Sarah Cooper placed seventeenth in the Scripps National Spelling Bee after winning the San Diego County Spelling Bee. Although her spelling career ended there, she did go on to receive a bachelor's degree in American history and literature from Harvard College and has taught middle and high school history and English for almost two decades in Los Angeles, Boulder (CO), and La Jolla (CA). She is currently teaching eighth-grade U.S. history and serves as Dean of Studies at Flintridge Preparatory School in La Canada, California."I am not sure I could avoid the profession," she says, adding that both of her parents were career public high school teachers before they retired. Sarah says that she wanted to become a teacher to be with kids every day. "I also wanted to give back to the next generation what I learned from my many knowledgeable and kind teachers in elementary, middle, and high school. I wanted to teach skills and cultural literacy concepts that can help students be productive, thoughtful citizens of the world."In her classrooms, she likes to watch kids focus their energy into productive thinking as they start the day's activities. "I love connecting what we are learning in history to current events outside the classroom. I love watching students grow from year to year in my classrooms or in the hallways of our school. I love one-on-one conferencing with students when we can discuss their writing and their thinking," Sarah says.When she sat down to write her book, Making History Mine, she looked through all of her lesson plans and handouts from the previous ten years to see patterns, themes, and strategies. "Once I had taken notes on all of these ideas, I began putting the elements together into chapters based on goals and themes," Sarah explains. Sarah is currently working on a book with Routledge about teaching middle school civics and current events, Creating Citizens, due out in early 2018. For her own professional development, Sarah likes to find inspiration by reading widely and collaborating with colleagues.  "I look for the idea that I can't get out of my head, the one that at first sounds too difficult or outside my typical style. If it sounds challenging and I can't forget it, it's probably an idea that will transform one area of my teaching." Recently she has also found it interesting to read about how schools change. As a teacher of English at both middle and high school, I nodded, laughed and cheered throughout this admirable guide. Sarah Cooper's approach to lesson planning and classroom management is well documented, clear and persuasive. She combines state and national standards with her own educational goals, love of history and appreciation of the middle school student. She draws on internet resources for primary and secondary documents, and on literature for insight and inspiration. She incorporates short writing assignments as a means for students to further their thinking and caring about historical figures and events and their connection to the present. Drawing on her own experiences of trial and error, Cooper conveys the value of being not only the organizer and standard bearer, but a student as well, providing many opportunities for shared discovery. This is a lively account, filled with information and ideas applicable to any subject and grade level.

I love this book. The author gives some great examples and provides some interesting suggestions on how to make history fun and exciting. I seriously recommend this book for any one teaching social studies to late elementary, middle level, and early high school students.

Anyone interested in history may take an interest in history education and related debates --and then be curious to see how the history classroom works today. This is an honest book by a talented teacher.

This book has fascinating insight into teaching history in a way for students to "own" it, to connect them to the information and apply to world study. I would encourage all who teach this subject to study this material and apply it in the classroom.

With the lofty goal of covering hundreds or thousands of years in a single semester (and adhering to state and national standards), teaching history can be a daunting task. Planning and organization are crucial. Engaging the middle-schooler is an additional challenge. Sarah Cooper has created a template for making history come alive for middle school students! Chapters are attractively and clearly arranged and deal with a wide range of topics and strategies, starting with the individual and who makes history, to global citizenship and evaluating ethics and solving problems. Current events are brought in, underlining the importance of connecting past and present. Research strategies are included, as well as the importance of each student being organized--a section is devoted to the organization of student binders. Creative assignments, such as creating Facebook-type pages for historical figures, a talk radio panel on the election of 1800, or having 'conversations' with George Washington, are sure to spark students' interest. Ms. Cooper honestly reveals strategies that didn't work in her years of teaching, which is very helpful. This book is a gem for new teachers, as well as seasoned veterans. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!
