Mr. Arena you've done it once again. The companion to The First Ladies of Disco is an absolute wealth of artists, writers, and producers who helped shaped, molded, and defined one of the greatest music genre's of the twentieth century. Mr. Arena has masterfully articulated each artist to tell their story, their family backgrounds, and how hard work and determination, they got their start, how they felt about Disco at the time of their hits they recorded, and what they've been up to in the intervening years. The author carefully focuses on each artist, writer and producer with the feeling of complete dedication to their art, and who they are. He brings to life the music and it's many scenes. You come away with such a glorified feeling from the book, knowing how strong and resilient these artists are, and as well as kind, nice, and hard working people they are. Many of disco's best moments will be relieved again through Mr. Arena's collections of interviews. I praise Mr. Arena for keeping the disco ball turning, the strobe lights flashing and the dance floor full. His determination, perseverance, dedication and passion have brought fourth a love to continue to keep this genre of music in the spotlight.

Superb insight into the mostly unheralded disco artists of the 70s/80s. A "must read" for lovers of the era and the music.
James Arena's music books must be the best-kept secret in pop music history; personally, I think they are essential reading for anyone interested in that magnificent, maligned music known as "Disco." It's hard to believe that such a robust and vibrant genre as Disco really only had a scant five years to shine (1974-1979), yet that music's impact on later "Dance " and "Club" music is inestimable. And classic Disco lives on, thanks to books like this and the longevity of many of the original performers. And this is where Legends of Disco really shines. As a personal oral history of many of the actual singers, musicians, writers, and producers, LOD gives an invaluable "inside peek" at the industry at the time and how success was made (and lost) in a magical, mercurial time period which will never be repeated. Amongst my favorite performers, and their stories: George McCrae ("Rock Your Baby"); Sarah Dash ("Sinner Man"); Denise Montana ("#1 Dee Jay"); Francie Joli ("Come to Me"); Bob Esty ("Last Dance"). These folks' stories - even when heartbreaking as they sometimes are - bring back to life a moment in time which I for one, vividly recall and will never forget. (Attending college in New York City in the late 1970s, Disco WAS New York at that time, and the disco pulse could be felt as you walked down the street. The whole city really felt ALIVE in that shining moment before AIDs and Ronald Reagan ushered in the horrific, soul-dead 1980s.) The stories in LOD also give an amazing "behind the scenes" look at an industry which mercilessly chewed up and spit out performers at an alarming rate; as more than one disco star reveals, "You really took the money and ran!" When "Disco" became a "thing" circa 1975, record companies insisted all R&B and Soul acts immediately became Disco acts, and this caused no end of stress for many musicians. Others took to this edict gracefully, and rolled with the flow, turning out some of the most beautiful music of the 20th Century. And as this book underscores (and Disco fans have always known,) classic Disco has a lot of Soul and R&B in it, and in fact is in many ways the logical evolution of those traditional music forms. As for the "Disco Sucks" rebellion of 1979, history has pretty much uncovered that it was a reactionary (and highly racist) response to various socio-cultural trends of the time, primarily by disenfranchised white men who saw their beloved "rock and roll" threatened by something far more creative and energetic. Most of the garbage music of that time has mercifully faded into oblivion, while classic Disco lives on. And Mr. Arena has done yeoman's work in tracking down, and recording for posterity, the wonderful life stories of those great talents who gave us so much, back when we really needed it. Bravo.
As a child of the sixties, I grew to become a man who despised disco music - I was a smug, rock music lover, and although I felt the whole "Death to Disco" movement was too mean-spirited for my tastes, I nonetheless refused to accept the disco/dance music genre as a legitimate form of music. I'm happy to report I have reformed, and that reformation came to fruition after reading author James Arena's first two tomes, FIRST LADIES OF DISCO and its follow-up, LEGENDS OF DISCO (His most recent, STARS OF 90's DANCE POP is next on my list.).Mr. Arena, through his meticulously-researched books, has shown how masterful and beautifully sensitive these artists of the dance era are. Their humanity shines through thanks to Arena's genuinely loving interviews; I feel I owe these stars an apology for not giving them a fair shake the first time around.These books cross musical genres; if you are any type of music fan (and who among us isn't?), you owe it to yourself, to these great performers, and to Mr. Arena himself to add these books to your library. ~ STEVE LUDWIG, Host, Steve Ludwig's Classic Pop Culture
