Cattle ranching on the plains of the unsettled Dakota badlands, leading the Roughrider charge on San Juan Hill, winning the Presidency, African safaris and finally charting the previously undiscovered Rio du Duvida (River of Doubt) were a series of challenges confronted and ultimately conquered by Roosevelt. I feel strongly that it is only the absence of a history defining event during his Presidency that prevents him from being held in the same regard as Lincoln and Washington in our pantheon of Presidents (he is after all on Mount Rushmore).In addition to setting out the seemingly impossible obstacles facing the expedition (hostile Indians, miserable weather, poor provisioning, debilitating disease, maddening insect infestation and other hazardous animal life), the book does an outstanding job of introducing the reader to other important members of the expedition, most importantly, Brazilian explorer and naturalist Colonel Candido Rondon and Roosevelt's son Kermit.If you enjoy this type of story, I would highly recommend Undaunted Courage by Stephen Ambrose, which details the Lewis and Clark expedition.

It has everything a reader would want: the mysteries and terror of the jungle, the incredible and deadly complexity of the river, the inept preparations for the adventure, the wild and unknown Indians of the region, needless deaths, murder, history, and the bigger-than-life story of the aging Teddy, his son, Kermit, and the rest of the exploration party.I enjoyed it totally. Millard's Churchill book was good, but it suffered from often static setting, mostly in a Boer prison. This book has a built-in momentum, as the ill-prepared group make their way down the river into the unknown. It is the perfect story for Candice Millard, and she tells it perfectly.

I heard Candice Millard on a John Grishham book tour podcast and was intrigued by her background and the meticulous research behind her books. (My gosh, the one she DIDN'T write about Ben Franklin - and why - says worlds about the authenticity this author brings to the table!)This tale of Roosevelt's ill-conceived and ill-fated expedition through the Amazon reads almost as much like a novel as a documentary. I particularly enjoyed the insights into Roosevelt's personality - his earliest motivations and his rigorous discipline to refuse the hand early life dealt him. The same could be said of Captain Rondon, the Brazilian lead on the trip.The science and history lessons are so integral to the story (or the story is so inherent in the science and history) that you'll likely find yourself smarter and wiser and more emotionally attuned to both nature and human nature for having read this book.

What a wonderful book!! Having read previous biographies of "Teedy" I came to this book with an already favorable image of this man who overcame severe asthma in childhood and, indeed, met all obstacles with a sense of perseverance and a firm belief that one must grasp life with both hands and always do the best with the gifts we are given. While this book shows more of his vulnerability, both physically and emotionally, it did nothing to diminish my admiration of this wonderful man. What a National Treasure!!Now I come to the author, Candice Millard. As I continued reading the book I was amazed over and over again at the sheer amount of research and the amount of talent it took to put all these facts into a cohesive and very entertaining story!!I wholeheartedly recommend this book!!!!!! Five stars to the story, itself. Five stars to the author. Five stars to Theodore Roosevelt. My only regret is I was given the option of just five stars.

Be warned of one thing while you read, before you start saying "Well yeah in that case it would work like that but what about x?" make sure you read the entire chapter. 99% of the time Dan will answer that exact question before the chapter is done. It was kind of like he was reading my mind while I was reading the book. Very strange but in a good way.I purchased this book because Dan was coming to town to speak at a local meetup and I wanted to better understand his talk. What ended up happening is a major course correction for my product development. Only time will tell if this was a good idea but I'll have to say I feel much more confident in using the methods outlined in this book.

A lot of other reviews state that this book is a must for product managers... I disagree. I think it's a must for executives, entrepreneurs, and designers as well. I've had the pleasure of seeing Dan speak and walked away with a lot of nuggets of truths on launching products successfully with iterative cycles. It's great he's taken the time to write a comprehensive book that covers A-Z on lean product methodology. The interesting thing about Lean is that it's not just a product methodology. You will learn many lessons on how to apply to improve operations, processes, and virtually all aspects of your company.

Most new products (70-80%) fail in the market. And most of these products don't fail because they were built or marketed poorly; they fail because they are the wrong products to start with. Products that people don't really want or need (despite what they may have thought or blurted out during focus groups.)A great product-market fit is a rare beast and most companies discover too late that they've spent months or years developing and perfecting a product that the market does not care about.The Lean Startup approach has, deservedly, gained a lot of recognition and praise for helping entrepreneurs and innovators minimize their chances of failure by focusing them on validating their ideas before over-investing in them. Experienced people have a hard-time giving up their old ways, and first-timers are not sure where to start.This is where Dan Olsen's book comes in. The thing I liked best about "The Lean Product Playbook" is that, unlike many business books, there is no fat in it: it's a LEAN book about LEAN product–the opposite of those books that take one concept that can be explained in 10 pages and turn it into a 300-page book through repetition and filler material. Every chapter and every section contains clear and actionable instructions on what to do, what to measure and how to make sure you don't fool yourself.Winning in the market with a new product is a challenge, but Dan Olsen is a great coach and if you follow his advice and techniques you will be in a great position to beat those terrible odds for market success that I mentioned at the beginning of this review.Bravo "coach" Dan, and thank you for sharing your playbook with us!

I own the Audible and Kindle versions of this book. Why?! Because it's that damn valuable! I need the audio version so I can listen to it several times to let all the concepts sink in, and the Kindle version so I can read the words and make notes to go through later so I can apply them in my own projects. This is the evolution of Eric Ries "Lean Start Up". This book tells you the exact step-by-step process you need to take to make your product successful in the marketplace. This book needs to be required reading for anyone who has an idea for a product, manages new product development, or designs new products. This is probably one of the most important books I will read all year, and I am on track to read 100 books in their entirety this year!
