Learning the Art of Electronics: A Hands-On Lab Course

Review

Author Thomas Hayes, ... designed the new volume for a full-semester laboratory course. [The book] is organised into 26 chapters, each offering rich context and clear explanations in labs, notes, supplementary material and worked problems ... labs are balanced between analog and digital electronics. Hayes begins with familiar analog circuitry and includes discussions of voltage dividers, Ohm's and Kirchoffs's laws, and Thevenin equivalents. The labs tackle RC filters in both time and frequency domains with a cheerful approach that is not overly mathematical ... retains many of the handsomely drawn circuits of the original Art of Electronics and is much more comprehensive ... Instructors will want to know if Learning the Art of Electronics can stand alone as an undergraduate lab text. The answer is yes. While the book does cross-reference The Art of Electronics, it 'means to be self-sufficient', and it achieves that goal.' Paul J. H. Tjossem, Physics Today

If you purchased the hands on lab course Learning The Art of Electronics (pub 2016) and want to do all the labs, you will find a very time consuming and tedious task of ordering the parts as there are over 135 distinct part numbers from 9 suppliers. Luckily, at the EEVblog forum, BobsURuncle posted Excel spreadsheets with all the parts organized in a format where they can be uploaded into the parts distributors shopping carts. This will save you hours of your time. Search for "Learning The Art Of Electronics - Parts BOM".

Helpful book for those that might be struggling with some of the content found inside AoE, e.g., beginners, hobbyists, new students, etc. Much improved and expanded since the earlier "student manual" format. Readers will have the opportunity to learn about and build many interesting circuits (assuming they purchase the necessary parts). Like AoE it quickly jumps into conceptualizing circuits from a Thevenin perspective and soon after hops to RC circuits i.e., frequency sensitive voltage dividers, filters, etc. Which is fine for some beginners. But, beginners, hobbyists, etc., that might need a little more mathematical/conceptual hand-holding before jumping headlong into Thevenin equivalence talk, etc., might consider checking out books by Paynter, e.g., Electronics Technology Fundamentals first, Practical Electronics for Inventors second, and then circling back around to this one and AoE.The one major fail would be the significant number of typos, reference errors, etc., liberally sprinkled throughout the book. Readers will need to check out the Errata list on the author's webpage. The book reads like one that was never read by an decent editor. It's quite challenging to see where any publisher editing was done. Readers and purchasers should be able to expect much more from academic book publishers...but alas...it looks like some of them are giving up when it comes to the MOST BASIC form of book publishing quality control i.e., actually reading the book and checking for obvious typos/errata before publishing and sending it out to the masses.Essentially, the book's content is great and will likely be helpful to many. Thumbs up and three stars to the author, he's done a great public and educational service. But, anyone purchasing it will need to carefully review the book's Errata page and make the numerous typo, etc., corrections. i.e., do the work the editors were paid for but clearly didn't do. Thumbs down and minus two stars to the editors/publisher.

I purchased this book thinking I would be able to go through the labs one at a time to get a better hands-on understanding of electronics. I have taken a few undergraduate electronics classes where I learned the basics of electronics and got some experience working with breadboards and components in the lab sections. I have also worked through a few examples in the Make books on electronics. I am not an absolute beginner, and this book was very difficult for me. The format is confusing and the author’s writing style is difficult to follow, the labs aren’t clear, and there are many mistakes in the text. This book may be great if you have someone to walk you through, but it is not for beginners who are trying to learn electronics by themselves. Each chapter is broken up into four parts: an introduction (N), lab (L), supplementary section (S), and worked example section (W). So the first thing you need to learn is how to get around the book. It sounds silly, but it adds to the frustration of already trying to learn a difficult subject. When you compound the other flaws then having a confusing layout that is difficult to navigate doesn’t help. The author’s writing style is very odd for a book seemingly aimed at beginners. I have spent more time trying to decipher what the author is asking me to do instead of working on anything hands-on. The book assumes you have skills and knowledge that it does not teach you. The book is funny because the author frames it to being an almost rebellious way to learn electronics with "rules of thumb and reliable 'tricks'' allowing you to "leave the calculator-bound novice engineer in the dust" but then the text is so confusing that you end up not understanding the original concept nor the rules of thumb. The book talks about subjects I even studied before and it goes over my head. The instructions for the labs are difficult to understand. There isn't a breakdown of which parts and tools you need at the beginning of each chapter, so it is confusing. The chapters jump right in and start referring to parts they assume you already have. I think there is a list available on another website that shows the parts needed, but I don’t get why there isn’t a short summary right at the beginning of each lab like in most other LAB books. The book is packed with information, but I still don’t believe the excuse that there wasn’t enough room to include a short list. The instructions, drawings, and goals of the labs should be clear: This is what you will learn, this is what you need this is what you need to do, review. This book doesn’t seem like it was meant to stand alone. As other reviewers said, the book is also full of typos and obvious errors beginning with the first chapter, so you must refer to another secondary document to make sure you aren't memorizing/learning the wrong information.I think this book is more for someone taking a course with a professor there to guide them through it than something a beginner will be able to pick up and be able to complete without the help of other reference books or tutors. I thought it could function as a stand-alone book, but I was mistaken. I'm not sure who is giving these 5-star reviews, but I'm guessing that they are engineers who are already familiar with the material. It probably makes great sense to someone who already mastered the topics covered in the book, but it is practically of no use even to someone who is eager to learn the subject and has some experience building and testing circuits.I've probably had to take 5-6 electronics classes in which I've received all A's, and this book made me feel like I didn't know a thing about electronics. If you are just starting out and trying to learn by yourself, I would recommend you start with another book. If you have access to a professor or tutor or you can take part in a class that walks you through the labs, I'm sure this book is fantastic.

I wish this would have been the text book when I was in college! You can actually sit and read it for pleasure and after 40 years in electronics I haven't found many like that.Expensive but quality is and it is well worth it.

This was the textbook required for my son's college class. His dad is a teacher at the tech college and they both tell me this a great textbook, just as described and very helpful. Me? I don't have a clue. Them? They know what they're talking about.

When I received them. I was excited to learn how to code. The problem was that every time I turn a page, it just felt like the book is about to break. After reading all the reviews about how their binding broke. I took action, I went to Staples and asked to get them spiral bind. They cost $6 each to add the spiral binding and I was impress with their results.

It is very good because it is easy to read and well organized. Some people would complain about a lot of images and empty spaces, but easy on the eyes for me and give you info in bites. The best way to use these books it to combine them with practical training (widely available online or on YouTube. Like SoloLearn and CodeAcademy). Read the relevant chapter in this book first, then practice it. Coding needs reading and practicing using various sources, because no single source gives you the whole story. It is a matter of accumulating bits and pieces of knowledge.

This set is fantastic! I’ve been teaching myself html, css and JavaScript and JQuery for the last month or so. I’ve been using these books along with a couple of other sources, and I’ve learned so much! (Still have a long way to go though, of course.) Overall, I’ve found these books to cover the basics and then I move on to other sources to learn in a more in-depth fashion. These books are set up in a way that shows you the basics, but then serve as a great reference to go back to after you’ve learned enough to write code more proficiently on your own. They are also beautifully laid out and present the information in a simple fashion, making the concepts bite-sized and easy to learn. I have not had any issues with the binding, but I also have been more careful about not stretching the binding past 180 degrees when opening the books, because of the cautionary reviews I’ve read on here.

These two books are beautiful with their illustrations and such, but the pace at which they move is incredibly slow. As someone who has programming in other computer languages (C#, C++, C, Java) and other markup languages (XAML), I found it a bit irritating at time how the pacing of the book was. On that note, I wish some of the stock photography illustrations in the book were replaced with additional examples as the examples that were in the books were helpful. Nevertheless, the books are generally helpful, especially when laying out the format of functions and indicating what goes where. However, if you have programming experience elsewhere, consider another book.

This is likely a premature review, but I have just finished the HTML and CSS book. This review will be revised as necessary once I finish this set, but I have to say: what an amazing read. I have previous experience programming in R and Python, and found the exposition to be very coherent and very clear. About 10 hours through reading this book, I could actually read and understand most HTML code on a webpage. I have experience here and there having to write simple HTML pages on the fly, but it's nice to finally -understand- what the code is doing and have a good idea on how to structure a web page. Highly recommended for people who need to learn HTML quickly and don't have time to Google absolutely everything! The CSS section is just as great, but it will take longer than 10 hours to go through. Very nice and easily reproducible examples (except in the cases where he uses a downloaded image, but I don't mind that much). This book could use some updating, however, with respect to HTML5 and CSS3.

has been deprecated, for example. I look forward to seeing an update released.

Decent learning tool so far. More of a refresher really. I'm going through the HTML book just to brush up but it's the JavaScript and jQuery that I need to learn. I took some other reviewers advice and immediately had it spiral bound at Office Depot. Which turned out great! The reason I give it 3 stars is because it really needs to be revised and updated for HTML5. Many of the examples include older code (which the author distinguishes as such) and also include CSS style in the HTML code. Which in my opinion is a big waste of time. The author should explain structure and keep CSS styling completely separate as that's pretty much how it's done everywhere now. The book is copyrighted 2011. Which is pretty ancient in the programming world. I'm sure I will more than get my money's worth out of this book set, I'm just a little disappointed in how outdated it is.

I was taking an online course and some of the concepts were confusing. This book saved me. The author has a real gift for explaining things clearly and succinctly, with appropriate examples. It's not a book for "dummies", so don't expect a lot of chatty banter (like in the Heads First books), but you really don't need to read through 700 pages of wordy prose to learn to code. Most concepts are easily explained in a paragraph or two, a large colorful illustration, and a few clear examples, that you can play with on your own (all code examples are downloadable). Also serves well as a reference source. The large colorful pages make the book a delight to read and easy to digest (never buy a programming book that is just black and white; color adds a lot). The format may at first seem "sparse", as many pages just have illustrations of code with a paragraph or two to explain things, but it turns out this is a quick and effective way to learn. You can stop looking at other books on the subject. This is the one to get.

The author does an excellent job harmonizing history with the letters of St. Patrick. He brings in noteworthy, historical data that really fill in some of the gaps missing from the historical accounts of St. Patrick's life...given that the details of St. Patrick's life are largely shrouded in mystery. This book was not so much a biography…as it was a historical accounting of the church, that happened to lean on the story of St. Patrick (really only his letters and what the man himself wrote of his life). My one criticism of this work is that it was wrought with speculation. Well the author doesn't excellent job unpacking the details that are known of Patrick's life…he consistently filled in historical details with his own speculations about what Patrick, his family, and others may have been thinking throughout the book. It was highly distracting, in an otherwise well-written book. That said… I rated it four stars for a reason. It was a well-composed work, easy to read, and chock-full of accurate historical data verified by multiple sources. Definitely worth your time as a student of history. Further…the translations of St. Patrick's letters in the back of the book, are worth the price of admission alone.

I'm not sure what led me to finally read this book, because I was afraid it would either be an unhistorical repetition of legends, or else an attempt to discredit people's devotion to Patrick. Happily, this extraordinary biography would be as easily appreciated by the devout believer as by the most secular skeptic. Freeman successfully manages to place Patrick in his historical context, while using Patrick's own writing to sketch a vivid picture of who he was as a human being, aside from or in addition to devotional legend. Best of all, the narrative is quite lively and well written.

I enjoyed the biography, but I had to rate it less than 5 stars because of an inaccuracy I found. The author says there was no High King during Patrick's early Times in Ireland, but the respected scholars on the Irish high kingship would disagree. This slight oversight made me question the rigor of research that went into the claims made as fact throughout the book.I assume it to be accurate overall and perhaps there is just a few mistake like the one I noticed.

In this work Mr. Freeman has presented a very lucid and well thought out accounting of the famous saint. Being of half Irish descent, I was naturally drawn to learn more about this illustrious figure of the distant past. I imagine that he may well have set my ancestors on the straight and narrow path of Christianity but, irregardless of that, his great and honorable role in helping moderate and humanize a people famed for their wild and uncivilized behavior may have also contributed to the fact that so many of America's ablest and most successful political leaders claim Ireland as their (or part of their) ancestral home. I feel that the author not only communicated with his readers in a very intimate and entertaining fashion but also obviously researched the subject thoroughly before composing his book. All in all, St. Patrick of Ireland is, in my humble opinion, a superior piece of authorship illuminating an often little understood icon of piety and religious dedication (who has long been celebrated at festivals worldwide in a most un-pious way) by helping the reader through careful and thorough research to seperate the man from the legend. This book, as such, should be recommended reading for high school and college students (to help temper their future celebratory revels, ofcourse).

This biography was helpful because it presents a lot of information about St. Patrick in a clear, concise way that's easy to read. However, anyone with even the pretense of an orthodox Christian view will notice a bias--in some chapters more than others. It took me a while to get past p. 61: "We can admire the spirit of Pelagius and declare that Augustine was a killjoy who burdened Christian thought forever with the idea of original sin..." Really, can we? (That statement is not historically accurate, since original sin [yes, even Augustine's view of it,though his was better articulated] wasn't exactly a novel idea.) That said, Freeman does present a fairly balanced historical view throughout the book.I don't claim any expertise on the matter, but one point of contention: It's odd that in quoting St. Patrick's beliefs from his "Confessions," (pp.77-78) Freeman references the Apostles' Creed. It would seem much more relevant to point to the revised Nicene Creed from 381 AD, the structure of which Patrick closely follows.
