I absolutely LOVED this book of essays, it was so on point with my life right now, and was much needed in a time full of questions. These essays are filled with advice, experiences, encouragement and love. Strong women, sharing their stories of life, being vulnerable, accepting and encouraging of one another and sharing these stories with the public. From the first sentence in the author’s note, to the last of the acknowledgments, I was intrigued and even brought to tears at times. I texted all my girlfriend’s to tell them about this book and how important I think it’s for us “40-ish” women to read and know that, through the dredges of our 30’s, there’s a beautiful light at the end of the tunnel.I’m giving this book 5 stars! I can’t wait until publication date to get my hands on several copies of this book, to share with all my girlfriends. This book came at the exact time in my life I needed some positive encouragement, and this novel was a beautiful surprise.

This collection is written by a series of authors who share different reflections on their experiences of being somewhere in their forties. I easily identified with many of the selections since I am in that age range. Although, I was only familiar with two of the authors, I enjoyed their sentiment,, sage comments, and their recollections on how their lives have changed since their twenties. It's a great series of articles that will strike a chord with any woman who's found her stride in her forties. Thanks to NetGalley for the advance read.

I can see this as a great book to give to my Millennial friends when they hit 39 year old, to get a feel about what other women have faced living in their 40's.I am actually in my 50's, but I could still relate to this book. It made me laugh, it made me think and it made me realize we are all here togetherThere are 15 writer's stories in this with different essays about life from all aspects. Out of the 15 stories, I could relate to at least 10 of them. My favorites included "Youth Dew" by Lee Woodruff and "Why I didn't Answer your Email" by KJ Dell'Antonia.I recommend this book for all women of 'a certain age' or close to it!

These well-written and mostly encouraging essays were hit-or-miss for me in terms of identifying with the authors since I am neither married nor a mother--traits that were at the heart of many pieces in this book. Overall, though, these women have confirmed something I already suspected. Forty is not the end-all, be-all of existence. I turned forty earlier this month. And I’m okay with that. I’m not going to stick to “29...and holding,” nor will I go about moaning that my life is over. I like where I am in my life. And I’m excited to see where I’ll go next.

I couldn't put this book down. As a 48 year old male, I am not exactly the target audience, but I found the writing excellent and really enjoyed the broad range of essays. Catherine Newmann's timeline of friendship through the clothes she shared with a friend, Jill Kargman's description of becoming and actress at 39 and Lee Woodruff's heart-wrenching story of tragedy encapsulate the dramatic up and downs we all face in life. As Lindsey Mead points out in her wonderful introduction: "the arc of time smooths out most bumps and (I) am less inclined to panic about individual problems." These are stories of how we learn to accept who we are and the lives we lead in our 40s and the peace that comes with that acceptance. Excellent read.

For those of us that are around this age (ahem), you will enjoy reading the 15 different essays by female writers. The essays actually cover ages late 30s into the 50s, and I found most of the essays very relatable. By this age, all of us have experiences that connect us together as women, whether they are stories told about love, friendship, aging parents, and fashion trends. I see it as a celebration of the knowledge that we have acquired throughout our lives.

This is a great read! I loved reading the personal stories, as this milestone is different for every woman. The writing made this feel like it was written by an older sister or best friend, as it was really intimate.

I'll read whatever Jessica Lahey writes, the phonebook, a menu, whatever. Her honesty and heartfelt support of other women is a wonderful gift. I have benefited from it personally (multiple times) as a writer and am so grateful for her generosity and kind heart. Love Being 40'ish!

#168 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

I'm giving this crime thriller five big stars because it really was an amazing read. I'm not normally a reader who enjoys multi-points of view but I gladly made an exception in this case. Told by three different women who exhibit strengths to admire, this story kept me riveted to the page the entire time. D.D. Warren is a police officer who isn't afraid to allow civilians to give her a helping hand with a difficult case. Flora Dane is the survivor of a horrific period of abduction and torture who fights every day to remain a survivor, never a victim. Evie Carter has been keeping secrets from her husband and what she finds when she arrives home after work one day means she will never have the chance to be totally honest with him. This book kept my interest focused on the book from first page to last. The characters in this story are written to be real people and that's sometimes a hard thing for authors to do. The information necessary to provide the solution to the crimes is revealed in natural ways so that it feels as if someone is actually finding the information in real time. The investigative forays into the dark web were fascinating to me because I have absolutely no idea of how those things work. Lisa Gardner is doing a masterful job of handling the characterization of Flora Dane. Her character could go oh, so very wrong, but Gardner hasn't let that happen. I'm already looking forward to the next book in the series. Many thanks to NetGalley and Penguin Group Dutton for an eGalley of this novel.

Read this book! I love Lisa Gardner but I was disappointed by her last novel, Look For Me, so I am very happy to report that this book is a great read. This novel is fast paced and fascinating. Right away we meet Evie who is quickly arrested for her husband’s murder. That of course brings in D.D. to investigate. Our third POV is Flora, our survivor and CI, who remembers the dead husband from her time as a kidnapped victim. To further complicate matters Evie first met D.D. at a crime scene when her father was killed.Evie is a great narrator. She is smart and caring so as a reader we are confused as to why she is holding the murder weapon as the story opens. Ever so slowly we start to understand her and what she has done.D.D. is her usual hard charging self but even more so in this novel. The pace is quick as she works this case and its ramifications. There is a brief cameo by Ms. Kimberly Quincy, which is really great only because of the interaction with D.D.Flora really starts to shine in this book. I thought the beginning was slow and I was annoyed by the long rehash of her backstory but it quickly starts to make sense. She does a great job moving the story forward and holding her own. I am looking forward to seeing more of her evolving story next time. This was a quick paced story that I did not want to put down. Lisa Gardner can be very graphic and paint a really horrible picture with her criminals but this book was pretty tame for her. We did have some rehash of Flora’s abduction but I appreciated it being less graphic than she can be. Personally I enjoy the who done it more than I enjoy being in the perp’s head. I do wish it had been more twisty as I enjoy her plotting so much. I found it very obvious but that did not get in my way of enjoying the story. I can’t wait for the next one!

Lisa Gardner has gotten....better. But better than what? She was already a fantastic author. This book though, all I can say is that she raised the bar on herself.Never Tell grabs your gut and it grabs your brain. And it squeezes. The writing is seamless and stark. The empathy it elicits is scary. I didn't tear up until the end. Even then I didnt know if it was from sorrow or gratefulness.Thank you, LG.

This is a story that pulls you in, confuses you while simultaneously keeps you searching for something obvious to clue you in, but never allows you to decipher the obvious and not so obvious answer to the questions, some of which are verbalized and some of which remain forever a mystery. Through it all, you keep reading....like the story, you keep plowing ahead.

NEVER TELL is a grim, but gripping story in which several plots intersect.A woman who killed her father in a shotgun accident at the age of16 and was considered not guilty of murder, now 16 yrs later, appears to have killed her husbandin another shooting incident. Now this woman, Evie, says she was not the one who killed her father. She now claims she and her mother used that cover story to preserve theimage of her father from having committed suicide. So who killed her father?Did she kill her father? Has she now killed her husband? And who was her husband? On the surface he was a very personable windowsalesman, but he has no past, no relatives and never gets beyond superficialrelationships with people. After his death, it turns out he has hidden cashand phony driver’s licenses. A mystery man. Perhaps a bad man. DD Warren has a confidential informant, Flora Dane. Flora was abductedand held in sexual bondage by a long distance truck driver for 472 days. Althoughshe was eventually freed by the FBI, her head is not right. She is seriously damagedpsychologically. The only way she can keep going is by helping other peoplestruggling to overcome awful experiences. Not a happy life, but it keeps hersane - for the most part. DD Warren finds Flora helpful as a CI, but she also knows Flora is a loner, somewhat of a vigilante and reckless at times. But Flora is very useful and DDcannot just ignore her. Flora is becoming an important figure in this series. Then there is Kimberly Quincy, the FBI agent who led the raid that freedFlora, who is once again involved in Flora’s case because there were apparentlyother women who were abducted/killed by Jacob Ness, the man who heldFlora in bondage. This is still another thread in this complex story. NEVER TELL is complicated and sordid. But how can you not finish a story socompelling with so many intriguing subplots? Lisa Gardner is outstanding.Fred Dimond

From School Library Journal

Adult/High School-Ketchup Pistachio Cake. Meat Pie with Meat Crust. Baked Peppers with Creamy Marshmallow Sauce. Daring readers will come face to face with these and worse in this excellent book that's bursting with photographs, recipes, and bits of text and "tips" taken from mainstream American cookbooks of the 1940s-70s, when "the only spice permitted in excess [was] fat." Fascinating and valuable in their own right as cultural artifacts of the era, the entries are irresistible when accompanied by Lileks's hilarious running commentary. Jell-O gets its own chapter, and deservedly so; other sections include "Horrors from the Briny Deep" and "Cooking for a MAN: Tested Recipes to Please HIM!" YAs already familiar with the author's popular Web site "The Institute of Official Cheer" (www.lileks.com) will be thrilled to see that the book is just as wonderfully designed as the site. Those encountering Lileks for the first time are in for an even bigger treat than the "foamy prune whip with cherry gel" found within.Emily Lloyd, Fairfax County Public Library, VACopyright 2001 Cahners Business Information, Inc.

From Booklist

Lileks pokes fun at food advertising and promotional ideas from the '50s nascent food industry. Making sport of the assumptions that underlay American cookery at mid-century is an easy target. The reigning belief that anything technological or manufactured was by definition superior to nature's bounty today appears naive at best. Add to that the mindless nutritional opinions of the era, and there's plenty of laughter to be found in these ads. A vibrantly rendered shot of a thick, untrimmed porterhouse steak slathered with ketchup and then topped with sliced hard-boiled eggs looks ready to clot every coronary artery, not to mention its complete void of fresh flavors. Most hilarious are advertisements showing pretentious "French" chefs promoting their favorite ways to use marshmallows. How a dish of scrambled eggs topped with cheese, ketchup, and cream of mushroom soup earned the moniker "Eggs Oriental" goes beyond the inscrutable. #371,133 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)

I found 'The Gallery of Regrettable Food' to be screamingly funny, and not just because I can recall seeing stuff like this when I was a child. I remember weirdness entrapped in jiggly gelatin that came in a variety of toxic-looking colours and scary mystery meat rolled into loaves and presented on beds of wiltiness. While I don't need to relive the meals themselves, I delight in being able to point and laugh at what used to be the height of home culinary sophistication. If you ever get the feeling your kids aren't properly appreciating their PB&J, just show them this book and enjoy their flabbergasted expressions as they realise that not only did their parents walk to school in the snow and uphill both ways, but they had to eat this nonsense when they got home.

With only the very best of intentions, I bought this book used for $0.04 (yes, four pennies) as a joke birthday gift for a somewhat snobbish yet affable foodie friend, but regrettably (much like subject of this book) it never made it to the intended giftee. Upon receiving the book in the mail and briefly thumbing through it before wrapping it, I started to smirk....then, the next thing I knew, an hour had gone by and tears were streaming down my face and my abs ached from HOWLING with laughter. The section on meat is particularly amusing...I don't have the book in front of me but at the introduction of the chapter he mentions something to the effect of "the charred remains of a flame blasted ignorant ruminant". James Lileks is a wordsmith of comedy GOLD.Needless to say, I got wayyyy more than $0.04 worth of entertainment out of this book, and it now sits proudly in our guest bathroom, many a time I have since heard peals of laughter from 'the can' whilst a guest relieves themselves. Gross? Maybe. Memorable party restroom experience? Absolutely.

Nearly every page in this witty gem had me laughing out loud. The products and ads are funny enough on their own, but James Lileks's sarcastic commentary makes them all the more entertaining. I purchased this after looking at Lileks's website --Growing up in the 60's and 70's -- and in the midwest to boot, I'm all too familiar with the jello molds and "salads" of fruit cocktail and mayonaiise and miniature marshamallow -- so this was a trip down memory lane. I'm guessing anyone over 40 would find plenty of humor herein. I honestly don't know what younger folks would think. If you're not sure whether the humor is to your liking, check out the website first. It really is the same as what is on the website.A lot of people bemoan the highly processed, overly packaged and produced food available today -- but I'd take today's processed food over what passed for gourmet in 1960 anyday! You'd be amazed at the variety of recipes that feature hotdogs arranged in all sorts of odd and unappealing ways -- and the section on how top chefs use marshmallow is hysterical.Get this, laugh your rear end off, and be thankful for all of the culinary advances of the past 50 years.

People think of the era covered by Lileks book as "recent history" because we have television and film from this era, but really, it's not very recent at all. Sure, there are some people alive now who were alive then, but the cultural upheavals and historical lava flows that have occurred since then make them more like visitors from a foreign country than people of our time.Lileks answers the burning question: what nameless horrors did Wally Cleaver eat, that made him think becoming a hippy and destroying Western Civilization was a good idea? This book shows some of these culinary atrocities. It was the last era where corporations were seen as more or less benign entities. You can see where Wally Cleaver got the other idea: I mean, food made with 7-up? All those marshmallows? The twinkie defense was invented not long afterwords. After reading the book, you can understand why the kids were so angry in the 1960s. They'd been eating sinister marshmallow covered 7-up roasts prepared by their moms in the 1950s. Sure, they railed against sexism and racism and colonialism, but considering what the same people did in the 70s and 80s, perhaps it was just indigestion.

Had a rough day? Stressed about the looming Apocalypse and your dwindling bank balance? You need James Lileks. You need The Gallery of Regrettable Food -- actual food illustrations and photography from the Depression through the swinging 70s. There are a few recipes, but the focus is on the unappetizing pictures and Lileks's delicious commentary. Imagine the mind that could dream up hot dogs in aspic. No, don't. Not if you're eating. Or about to eat. Or ever want to eat again. Most of the content in Lileks's books is no longer on the website, so truly the book is worth buying. He describes a loaf of mottled red meat sludge in aspic as "a core sample from a mass grave." He tells the hidden stories of the people in those illustrations. Truly, he is the MST3K of old advertisements -- and his wit is as sharp as his eye.The effect of reading anything by Lileks is, first, laughter, tinged with horror. Then, as you read on, uncontrollable spasms of laughter. Then choking, screaming convulsions of something that might be laughter or agony, garnished by tears. Then full-fledged hysteria. It's absolutely guaranteed, and it's one of the best ways I know for dealing with a horrible day.Why yes, I had a . . . regrettable day. Any day in which one's automobile, freshly emerged from the shelter of a warranty period, demands repairs that will cost almost a month's rent (which, incidentally, has just been raised again), that day cries out for Official Cheer.(It worked, too.)

I ordered the book because a grand child participated in a Flat Stanley project a few years back while living in another state. She sent her likeness of Stanley to us so that we could show her different places and have all kinds of adventures together. I had not read the book before. We enjoyed the project and I like the book.

The book came in brand new condition. My daughter is reading it for school in 2nd grade and absolutely loves it. She goes in her room to read instead of watching tv or playing on an ipad. The story is interesting, fun, and at her reading level.

The book is defective, pages are out of sequence or missing. I have ordered several books, this is the first time this has occurred. Unfortunately, I think it is too late to return the book. I must add the story itself is very well written keeps you engaged. My 7 year old grandson enjoyed I very much along with the other Flat Stanley books. They are entertsing and educational.

I read this book to my first grade class, and we completed a Flat Stanley project where the kids mailed "flat" versions of themselves around the world. I work at a Title I school in an urban neighborhood, and many of my kids don't get to travel often. The book got them excited about "traveling the world" with our letters, and the kids learned a lot and had fun at the same time. I am excited to try it again next year!

My son loved this series of books. Always had a hard time finding books that keep his attention. Downloaded these one at a time as he needed reading material for school and he really enjoyed them.

I ordered this book because we received a Flat Stanley in the mail for a school project. I know a lot of schools do this for their K-2nd graders to learn about other areas of the country/world. I thought it would be fun to see where/how he originated. We enjoyed this book and have remembered his beginnings as we have traveled with our Flat Stanley. Great book for kids...they love it!!

It's a good read...kids seem to enjoy the creativity of the story. Boy gets flattened by a bulletin board. Boy goes under doors, through a man hole, into the mail and other adventures! Some of the scenes in the book could have been better developed, but hey, the book is old and still has lots of followers. What's there to complain about?

I had always loved the original version of Flat Stanley, but decided to go ahead and get this new edition to read to my class at Energy Express (a reading enrichment program for children in West Virginia). I knew it would be easier to get a hold of and would be a bit shorter than the original (which I have found didn't always keep the kid's attention for long due to it's length.)I'm pleased with how it's been adapted; I don't think much was changed. The illustrations are also very good. This is a great story and a lot of fun to read with kids. After we read it we all traced each other on big sheets of end roll and and then painted ourselves and cut them out so we could have flat versions of ourselves. The kids loved it!

About the Author

Dr. Rebecca W. Keller received her PhD in biophysical chemistry from the University of New Mexico in 1992. She was then awarded an NSF postdoctoral fellowship in the Department of Molecular Biology at the University of New Mexico, followed by a Burroughs Wellcome Fund Postdoctoral Fellowship in the Department of Molecular Biology at the University of California, Berkeley. As Dr. Keller home schooled her three children, she was unable to find science textbooks that she felt would give her children a solid foundation in the sciences. Her scientific background, coupled with her desire to educate her children, led Dr. Keller to found Gravitas Publications, Inc. and to develop the Real Science-4-Kids curriculum. Real Science-4-Kids is a “worldview-neutral” curriculum that provides students with a solid foundation in the sciences and also gives them the tools to evaluate scientific data on their own. Students are presented with up-to-date scientific facts and the steps of the scientific method, together with the critical thinking tools needed to help them evaluate scientific conclusions. Dr. Keller’s books are as philosophically neutral as possible and do not impose any single overall philosophical interpretation such as Darwinism, Intelligent Design, or Creationism. Instead, they allow students to make up their own minds about what the data show. Real Science-4-Kids, with its engaging, kid-friendly text and easy to use teacher-friendly manuals, is used in home, private, and public schools in all 50 states in the US and in many other countries. Dr. Keller’s publishing team continues to develop and test products at her Albuquerque headquarters. The website for Real Science-4-Kids is www.gravitaspublications.com.

I am really disappointed in this book. I bought the middle school version. It is more like 4th grade, maybe 5th grade. Definitely not 6th grade or above. And it is so brief. The cost is way too high. Maybe worth $10 or so.

I bought this for my seventh grader and it was too easy. There are no tests or review questions in this book. There is only one page of review questions and vocabulary in the lab notebook, but it was not very difficult. He did enjoy the book though and I ended up using this book as a supplement to another program. It really would have been better for a 5th grader.

for my 5th & 6th grade homeschooled kids. We LOVE LOVE this set of booklets. Be sure to buy a lab book for each child. Sharing doesn't work here. I really appreciated the parent's (answer) manual! My kids really look forward to doing our science each week. I couldn't find an easy to do/read/fun science series for this age. Absolutely fantastic. The experiments for each chapter are easy and fun to do. Fun projects are peanut brittle, chocolate cake, and silly putty and others. Just Great. Recommended to me by another mom.

The only thing that is missing is a test at the end of every chapter. Great book for introduction to chemistry for ages 8-14.

This book is well written and covers a good variety of astronomy based topics. The reason for the lower rating is the content is well below the middle school level, especially if the student has any experience with astronomy at the elementary level. I would not recommend as a stand alone curriculum and would avoid if this is an area of study for which your child has a strong interest. There are more appropriately scoped curriculum resources available online for the topic.

Excellent text for an upper elementary or lower middle school student.

Good resource for middle school teachers.

Great for middle school students!
