Review

"Roth is the bravest writer in the United States. He's morally brave, he's politically brave. And Portnoy is part of that bravery." —Cynthia Ozick, Newsday "Deliciously funny...absurd and exuberant, wild and uproarious... a brilliantly vivid reading experience."--New York Times Book Review "Simply one of the two or three funniest works in American fiction." —Chicago Sun-Times "Touching as well as hilariously lewd.... Roth is vibrantly talented...as marvelous a mimic and fantasist as has been produced by the most verbal group in human history." —Alfred Kazin, New York Review of Books

I admit that this book was a random purchase. I had been dealing with insomnia and I thought if I purchased a book of which I had no prior knowledge or information I could just open it up in bed at 2:30 AM and in just a paragraph or two would be lulled to sleep. Mistake.I ended up laughing out loud and waking my wife.Loved the book. Especially the nostalgia and sense of being there, real-time, New Jersey in the late ‘60s. Immersive.

This is my second go-around with Philip Roth. My first read was 'Ghost Writer' for a Holocaust literature course. After a recommendation from my professor for a book to utilize for my Master's thesis (the depiction of psychiatric care in 20th century American literature), I can safely say that my professor knows a good book when he reads one.Alexander Portnoy is, at times, completely annoying, yet there is something in his complaint that evokes a degree of sympathy and, for some, empathy. Sure, he's got more than enough to make even Freud's head spin, but he isn't wholly detestable. Roth writes this character so convincingly that I imagine the Doctor's reactions as he is sitting there listening to Portnoy ramble on. The issues involved in growing up Jewish dominate the novel, but there are multiple fascinating themes co-occurring as Portnoy's story develops. If you don't mind reading about penises and vaginas on every page and can tolerate an often abundant usage of Caps to emphasize Portnoy's mental duress, you should consider picking up this witty and thought-evoking read.

When I read this as a teenager OH SO MANY YEARS AGO, I thought it was a classic. I bought this as a gift for a young friend. Read a few pages and realized that it was no longer anything I'd want to reread. Still, Philip Roth is one of my top 5 favorite authors. His Pulitzer Prize winning book American Pastoral is one that I read cover to cover in one sitting.

This is a book that was considered scandalous when it came out. (It actually mentioned masturbation, more than once) The literary device is that the whole book is a one-sided conversation with Portnoy's psychiatrist. This allows the airing of some pretty intimate details and hangups without seeming gratuitous to most people. The book is also funny but requires some appreciation of the humor and pathos of the ethnic background, which should be no problem since the entertainment industry has been heavily influenced by jewish humor and verbal style. The "story" keeps the readers interest. My "review" is more of an impression or opinion than a full review, but there are several available I'm sure.

Not since Catch-22 have I read a book that could be so emotionally moving and so utterly hilarious to read. Roth's style is amazingly addictive, so that you feel like you have to keep reading to see what bizarre things happens next. The main character of this story, Alexander Portnoy, is one of the most relatable characters I've read. At his core, he is a teenager in rebellion against his overbearing parents, trying to reconcile the societal pressure he feels to live up to their standards with a desire to have fun. Everyone has been Alexander Portnoy at one point in their lives. It's in the ridiculous ways that Alex tries to rebel that give this book it's edge.Let it not be said that Phillip Roth is a shy writer. Portnoy's Complaint describes in exact detail the sexual escapades of our hero, both for the laughs and for the drama. While they aren't for everyone, I couldn't stop laughing and reading.I recommend this book to anyone, especially college students going out into the world.

A mix of bawdy humor and remarkable insight. A work of pure brilliance. The book is explicit in tone, and tests the reader's capacity for the outrageous throughout, but isn't that what great fiction is all about. Roth is clearly a genius. One of the legends of our era. His novels are easily among the greatest in popular literature.

My brother and I are both very senior citizens and live on opposite coasts. We haven't seen each other in years so our "literary" discussions occur on Facebook. I recommended a book that surprised him because he considered it risqué. He challenged me to read "Portnoy's Complaint" because he found it the smuttiest book he had ever read. I told him I had read it many years ago and would reread it if he would agree to read "Geek Love" which I found to be the most "memorable" book I had ever read. A cruel trick I played on him. I enjoyed "Portnoy's Complaint," though it did focus on masturbation more than I recalled but the novel really addresses Jewish identity issues which may have changed somewhat over the past decades but undoubtedly remain in the minds of many Jewish people. I found it interesting and entertaining and a good reminder that we all have a point of view. As for my brother's experience with "Geek Love," he certainly found it memorable...but he is trying to forget. I suspect I haven't been forgiven. ;o)

I read somewhere that Roth resented being called a "Jewish author" - maybe he never had to read his own books! Portnoy, although filled with some good writing, is like a Jewish ethnography. And filled with cliché Jewish humor. And reading about a kid masturbating ad naseum had me throwing the book out after less than 100 pages. (Maybe they should coin a new word - "master bater" - for his character.) The book made him famous only for prurient shock value and I hated to think I was falling for the oldest trick in the entertainment book. If you want to read a great "Jewish author", try Saul Bellow!

The biblical picture of marriage is the blending of two lives in the deepest possible way into a new unit that will both satisfy the individuals involved and serve the purposes of God in the highest possible manner. The heart of mankind cries out for unity. We are social creatures. God Himself said of Adam, "It is not good for man to be alone" (Genesis 2:18). I would remind you that this analysis was before the Fall of man, and that this man already had the warm, personal fellowship of God. Yet God said, "That is not enough!" God's answer to man's need was to create woman, one who could be a suitable helper (Genesis 2:18). The Hebrew word used here is one that literally means "face to face." That is, God created one with whom man could have a face-to-face relationship. it speaks of that kind of in-depth personal relationship whereby the two are united in an unbreakable union that satisfies the deepest longings of the human heart. Marriage was God's answer for man's deepest human need - union of life with another.

I wish I would have read this book before my first marriage. There is so much good information in here for people who are dating seriously, but there is also plenty of great advice for married couples as well.

This is a life changing book. I highly recommend it to anyone who is married or thinking about getting married.

I liked it very much. I don't like the requiement the I need to have a number of words to complete this review. Pain in the but.

I would recommend this book for anyone who thinks they'll never get married. Mr. Chapman gives some really practical advice that applies to new and old marriages

this book was awesome

A great annoyance that I had with the beginning of this book was the concept of "ministry dating", a Christian dating a non-Christian. Chapman points to 2 Corinthians 6:14 as a reason that marrying is not a good idea. He also said that there is a lack of commitment in a Christian/non-Christian relationship. Honestly, the whole thing could backfire and the "unsaved" may be very jaded toward religion if the relationship does not work out. Also, the Christian may be drawn into sin by the non-Christian, after all, sin loves company (see Genesis 3).I still think that this book is worthy of a 4 star rating. There is a lot of practical advice with Biblical back-up. It has really caused me to re-think the role of a wife, but at the same time, it doesn't say that the wife is inferior to the husband, she is his partner, his teammate. The sections of the book that I think I learned the most from where the chapters on sex and money. Both have been perverted by modern day society. Chapman gives practical and Biblical advice in this area. The chapter dealing with in-laws was very eye-opening. I never really considered "Honor thy father and thy mother" when thinking about in-laws. However, it does make sense that if you are talking bad about your MIL, you may cause your husband to dishonor his mother."Who Will Clean the Commode?" - I didn't really give a lot of thought to the duties that each marriage partner would perform, whether it be cleaning the toilet, or paying the bills. I just thought that those things would work themselves out, and perhaps they might have. However, a much better solution would be to assign responsibilities before marriage so each partner knows what the other expects of them. One of the great things about this book is that the "Growth Assignments" at the end of each chapter offer a section for the married and the unmarried. I thought this was very helpful. The last chapter had a couple of annoying spelling errors (I am an editor, I pick up that kind of thing), but not so many that it makes the text difficult to read or understand.

My husband and I have been married for 9 years and had to read this book for an assignment in our training at Rhema Bible Training Center. My husband began to read his book first and would constantly ask me "When are you going to read your book?" To be honest, at first I thought I did not need this book BUT NOW I wish I read it before discussing marriage. This book brings out issues that my husband and I after 6 yrs of dating and a year and a half engagement plus nine years of marriage have never thought to discuss. These vary issues were building blocks that formed an invisible wall we could not see each other over. We had valuable parts of our lives that were effecting us that we were not sharing with one another because we did not know quit what they were or even how to communicate them. I am so thankful for the open communication we gained through this valuable tool. We both kept telling each other, "If we had read this book before marriage we would have saved much heartache and frustration." GLORY! The invisible wall is down and communication has entered such a more intimate and spiritually awakened level. This book is a MUST READ before even getting serious in dating! It helps you to look deep in yourself and see your heart and motives in a relationship as well as what you have to offer to someone else. Before getting engaged, I believe to be 100% effective both people should read and do the assignments in the book. BUT if like my husband and I you did not read this book and had limited communication THIS BOOK is the tool you need to help open you both to a new level of understanding and relating to one another. This book was our highway to a path we had never traveled with one another. I am very thankful this book is available and pray that everyone learns from it. A Happy Healthy relationship is worth everything you put in to it! This book is worth reviewing every 6 months and is fast and easy understanding with wonderful Assignments to encourage open two way bridge of communication that leads you both on the same path to a Loving Relationship of your dreams! Be blessed and encouraged. This book is a gentle tool to open doors to rooms and closets that you did not even know you housed. What a wonderful way to explore your own heart and motives as well as discuss those of your love one.

My wife and I read this book before we got married. It explains how to use Christian principals to relate to marital issues. How to always approach your mate in charity and always resolve situations in the spirit of love and not anger. It gives accounts of how this philosophy has played a role in many marraiges. While this book is good,we enjoyed Dr. Chapman's other book, The Five Love Languages much better.
