This is a beautiful book that explores Christmas, Santa and the North Pole. The illustrations are well done and vivid. Looking for a wonderful tale of fiction for the holidays, this is an excellent choice!

I ordered this book at the beginning of December to give to my 3 y/o on Xmas eve. I will be adjusting the text so as not to plant the seed about non-believers.This is the 25th anniversary edition. It is supposed to come with a CD (attached to the front inside cover) and an ornament. MAKE SURE YOURS HAS THE ORNAMENT, YOU PAID FOR IT! The first copy I received did not come with an ornament so I contacted Amazon and they sent me a new copy. I received the new one today and it had the ornament attached to the inside of the dust jacket in the back of the book. You will NOT receive a bell ornament. The one that comes with this edition says "All Aboard!"

Had debated purchasing this book for awhile now. I am very glad I did. When I searched for the Polar Express book it was a little confusing as there were a few listings but they all had the same reviews so I was unsure as to what condition the product would be in when it arrived as some of the reviews had low ratings. The book arrived in great condition though and even came with an ornament and an option to download an audio recording. I bought the book to use as a Christmas display on my entertainment center. Very excited to be able to decorate now! Attached are pictures from the copy I actually received. Do not hesitate to purchase!

This book and movie are an obsession for my little boy. He would have me read him this every night before bed all year if I didn't tell him that Santa took it back to the north pole (along with all the other Christmas books) when he brought the presents. He still insists on watching the movie several times a week, because I wasn't slick enough to hide that. We're also going to ride the Texas State Railroad Polar Express ride this year, because the only thing he asked for for Christmas was to ride a train. He'll be 4 in December, so the magic is still very much alive for him.

They're not joking when they say "Big Book"! WOW! I should have looked at the reviews before purchasing, I certainly did not expect or need a book of this size, but it's beautiful and great quality. When this huge box from Amazon showed up, I assumed Amazon was out of smaller shipping boxes. My husband and I couldn't stop laughing when we pulled this book out of the box. This book is perfect for large audiences (classrooms). Depending on your size, you may need help holding and turning the pages - my husband is 6 foot and he would have benefited from having an assistant page turner.

I have love this story since I was a kid! When the book came out it was read to me and my class in elementary school every year if I remember right.I lost track of it over the years and always want my own copy of it. I love the movie also it brought it more alive! It kept the same art work in the movie as it did in the book. The magic isn't just in the story it's in the art work as well! Now I own the 20 year anniversary of the book and I will not open it. I downloaded it on to my kindle so I can read it that way. I would like to own the copy that has the bell with it but I will get it in my own time. Thank You for the wonderful art work and the story☺

Love this book and love the anniversary edition. I bought this book along with the train set for my grandson for Christmas. The book is beautifully written and illustrated and its a fantastic Christmas story that every child should have. I'm sure it will become a tradition for us to read it to him on Christmas Eve. I also purchased the train set for him to go under the tree each year as a family tradition. I'd highly recommend this book. Its great for girls and boys alike as well as the young and the old.

This was one of my favorite books growing up. I was shocked when I learned that my best friend had never read it and therefore her son knew nothing of it either. I clearly had to put a stop to this madness and buy it for them. The artwork is just as stunning as I remember and the story is just as magical. I honestly didn't even realize that it came with an ornament which is an absolutely beautiful bonus. I loved it so much that I bought one for my boyfriend as well. They did a really wonderful job with this anniversary addition. Needless to say, everyone is in love with the book. I mean, how could they not be? It's a must have!

The book was quality printing. The ornament was a very nice touch on the tree. The free recording allowed us to listen to the book while turning the pages and having our hot chocolate. It was the start of our MEMORY MAKING of Our Polar Express Christmas which included this book and recording, the kids having parts in a Polar Express Inspired Christmas Play at Unity Church, a ride on the Polar Express to the North Pole to Santa and his workshop at the Florida Railroad Museum, and sleigh bells from Santa's reindeer left under the tree for each grandchild on Christmas Morn to be sure they "still hear the bell".

Review

“At last, an account of the AIDS crisis from the point of view of the people most affected by it—men, women and children of Africa, who are not simply victims but are heroes and scientists as well.” (The Daily Beast)“A stunning inquiry into the AIDS crisis in sub-Saharan Africa. . . . Iweala evokes the human cost of AIDS, and this is where Our Kind of People excels. . . . . Iweala’s focus on narrative, on sharing voices and experiences, becomes an act of redemption.” (The Los Angeles Times Book Review)“Iweala’s arguments are well reasoned. By making generous use of the voices of many Africans, Iweala’s writing possesses an immediacy that makes his message powerful and compelling.” (The Boston Globe)“Iweala tells the stories of those whose lives - and deaths - make up the numbers in a measured, accessible tone. The end of the story of HIV/AIDS is not yet written, but in Our Kind of People we see the beginnings of normalcy.” (Bono)“In this unassuming but important book, Uzodinma Iweala gives the AIDS pandemic not just a human face but a human voice. . . . Remarkable.” (The Times Literary Supplement)

From the Back Cover

HIV/AIDS has been reported as one of the most destructive diseases in recent memory, tearing apart communities and ostracizing the afflicted. But the emphasis placed on death and despair hardly captures the many and varied effects of the epidemic, or the stories of the extraordinary people who live and die under its watch. On a remarkable journey through his native Nigeria, Uzodinma Iweala opens our minds to these stories, speaking with people from all walks of life: the ill and the healthy, doctors, nurses, sex workers, students, parents, and children. Their testimonies are by turns uplifting, alarming, humorous, and always unflinchingly candid. At once a deeply personal exploration of life in the face of disease and an incisive critique of our ideas of health and happiness, Our Kind of People goes behind the headlines to illuminate the scope of the crisis and the real lives it affects.

Not giving this short look at AIDS in Africa (and specifically, the experience in Nigeria, the author's home country) more than three stars feels a bit churlish. But however moving the individual stories it contains may be, the book itself is far from flawless. My principal problem with the narrative surfaced early on, when Iweala makes the case that the West has a difficulty in understanding Africa's AIDS crisis because we are blinkered by ages-old prejudices. Certainly, those prejudices exist, especially among those who have never spent any time in sub-Saharan Africa. But Iweala then proceeds to undermine his own case by showing that many of these preconceptions may have some basis in reality. For instance, he discusses the nature of sexual relationships as being more likely to be concurrent than consecutive (he talks to a man who defines fidelity to a girlfriend as cutting the number of his other girlfriends from eight down to four, and then only to one other woman, for instance.) Forget labels and judgments: as Iweala and the physicians he talks to for this book comment, that kind of approach is more likely to result in the kind of dramatic spread of AIDS that the world has witnessed in Africa. He doesn't want traditional African beliefs criticized -- and yet some of those, too, have negatively affected the lives of Nigerians with AIDS, as they are excluded from the community and shunned our of a kind of fear that AIDS is spread via some kind of miasma.Where does the line lie between the West patronizing Africans by offering assistance and offending them by not doing enough? Iweala refers to African HIV/AIDS activists and their belief that Westerners don't see African AIDS patients "as similar to ourselves and thus deserving of proper medical care." What popped into my mind at that point was the number of Americans I've encountered who view their fellow Americans (of any color) in a similar way: anyone imprudent enough not to provide for health emergencies isn't their responsibility, I've heard it argued. This is a human issue, not simply a West/Africa issue, sadly, although in the case of Africa it may be complicated by history. Still, it isn't specific to Africa; similar perceptions have taken root in Asia at times.I didn't expect Iweala to provide answers to any of these very difficult questions that lie at the heart of the relationship between Africa and the West -- but given that he raised them, I was disappointed he adopted what struck me as a narrower view. Had the core narrative been stronger, these issues wouldn't have niggled at the back of my mind as they did. Are the portraits of the Nigerians who are battling the disease moving and compelling? Absolutely. Are the tales inspiring. Certainly. Is Iweala's core message -- that we should see each other, positive or negative, African or Western, as humans first and foremost -- important? Without question. Of course we must work to cross these boundaries. But I wonder whether the people who will read this book and respond to that message have already accepted this? How many North Americans and Europeans -- those who are willing to listen -- are going to find that at all revelatory or fresh? Perhaps it's true, however, that some of those observations that I found to be self-evident -- that we all should help those struggling with HIV to simply lead their lives -- are those that bear the most repetition. What this book does do well is to provide readers with a compelling oral history of AIDS in Nigeria. The portraits of the individuals Iweala encounters are vivid and he does a great job of blending their stories with the necessary facts and figures. Nonetheless, Still, this book didn't accomplish nearly what it could have. By brushing away the difficult questions -- dismissing a CNN story of a town of AIDS orphaned children in Kenya as melodramatic (fair comment) and as being about Kenya and thus irrelevant because Africa is more than just Kenya (well, Kenya is a part of Africa... and the village did exist...) -- Iweala undermined some of what he otherwise accomplished in my eyes. This probably won't be a majority view, and that's probably just as well, as this is certainly a powerfully human book that deserves readers. Nonetheless, I remain underwhelmed.

I lost my best friend to AIDS in 1989, and I still miss him terribly. For years I was terrified of making friends with gay men for fear of losing them. I had lost three friends, and until the anti-retro viral treatments were available, I was worried all the time that other friends would be taken from me. After the cocktail that worked was readily available, my fears dissipated and now I have two friends with HIV/Aids who happily live their lives fully, without the fear (on their part or mine) that they will die a premature death. I've seen the fear it inspires, first hand, how some family members react and how miserable self-righteous prigs see this disease as a punishment from God. But, that was a generation ago. To read a book written today, that details all the crap people had to go thru who had HIV/Aids thirty years ago, as if it were breaking news, is mind numbing. I have known about the devastation HIV/Aids has caused to millions of people in different countries in Africa for almost as long as I knew about it here.Iweala wrote this book as if it's a relatively new phenomena that needs to be addressed. C'mon. Wake up. This is not new or news. What is important is how millions of people in Africa are denied treatments because of either cost or inaccessibility to locations that administer treatments (the latter situation wasn't even addressed in this book). There are snippets in this book that are compelling, but mostly it is dated material, poorly and very defensively written. Iweala constantly bemoans how we clump all the people and all the countries in Africa together and make grotesque generalizations. Make that point and move on.I did, however, love the title of the book. Essentially, it asks, who gets HIV/Aids. And the answer is: People like us. Viewing the crisis that way keeps us from treating those people who are positive as "the other".

"Desert Storm is a valuable addition to the growing body of knowledge about the Gulf War. Rightly, the authors raise as many questions as they answer, reflecting thoughtful research and thoughtful consideration of what they found. Their reach is broad and genuinely supports understanding of both the political and military themes in the Gulf War." - The Journal of Military History"[W]ell-written, thoroughly documented and, therefore, a must for military historians as well as the general reader with an interest in current affairs." - Military and Naval History Journal

basis for war strat. quick. superior tech, traing, organization. Excellent leadership. More american service members would have died in traffic/household accidents if they had not been deployed.Big fan of "Shock and Awe"....especially when mixed with "underpromise...overdeliver"

Very well written. Starts a little slow with much preliminarybut fascinating information about the international politicsleading up to the war. After that starts a day by day account of the war and most major battles. I especially liked the manybehind the scenes personal interviews with pilots, Iraqi officers, tank commanders, etc. about their experiences,Many " stories never told" . It was riveting. Very well researched, unbiased & hard to put down.

A great source for additional 3rd edition spells. A good book for DMs and Players alike. And a great gift for the D&D players in your life.

One of my favorite S&S books

I maybe a bit prejudiced since one of spells in here is one I sent to White Wolf as part of their Open Call for writers. My first impression is that they took the format they used in the first Relics and Rituals(which I loved, especially the Vigilant prestige class) and repeated much of it with new material. Among the great new features includes Astrology as part of the game mechanics for play and a Prestige Class that is basically an old kit from the Shair's Handbook of the old Al-Qadim campaign setting for 2nd Edition(based primarily on 1001 Arabian Nights, good campaign setting to run that kind of campaign) revamped and made a little more divorced from that setting. Spells are nice, I like a few of the enchanted stuff and the rituals are always nice. Tattoo magic was interesting concept and they expanded it in this edition slightly but not at the expense of other sections. All in all, it's a great rescource for the Scarred Lands in particular and D&D/D20 in general.

Now don't get me wrong, i'm a huge fan of forgotten realms and dragonlance settings, but, Scarred lands has won my heart with this book. Imagine, adding the zodiac into your campaign, mixing arcane and divine with cabals, new prestige classes like the Sage and the High Astologer, of course great new spells weapons and all in all cool stuff, but also...(are you sitting down?) yes psionics! finally we learn about the Slarcians and how they... well, read the book. also, some great tomes. all in all the book is great. wonderful stories, great gameplay material. as always a little ~enh on the artwork, but definately not too bad. and of course, find it hard to keep track of what spell is where? yes the spell list tells you where to find all the coolness!... enjoy.

If you want a bunch of spells that would allow a team of a half dozen low-level wizards to take out epic level fighters effortlessly, this is your book. If you want amazingly powerful (and comparatively very cheap) magic items for your mid-level wizard to create, this is your book again. If you want amazingly over-powered prestige classes, this is your book. If you want skill points that duplicate very high level spells, this is your bookIf you want something that is in balance with the core rules, avoid this like the plague. I don't know if this was simply never play-tested, or was play-tested by a bunch of uncreative people. I'm looking at it from the perspective of a 3rd level wizard (because I always play wizards). There's nothing like having spells to give me a basic armor class of 27. Nothing like having spells which can render high-level fighters helpless or pacifist -- for months! -- and subject to coup-de-grace with their own swords. Nothing like having spells this early which allow you to fly, invisibly spy upon enemies, and remove armor from any opponent (or transfer it onto an opposing wizard). Yeah, an epic-level fighter might make a saving throw, but with a team of 6 wizards, he will fail one of them. The authors have a lot of interesting ideas to be sure, but if I was a dungeon-master, I would not allow this book to be used. I can only hope my DM will allow it (insert evil laughter).

I'm enjoying this book. If you are interested in playing around with Garmin GPS devices (GPS is a sort of hobby for many), you probably want to get it, and the 4 star rating is for you. However, if you want a book about GPS in general or about brands other than Garmin, this isn't the book you want.Much of the book amounts to a more detailed owner's manual than what Garmin gives you. It covers handheld units pretty well but is not intended for other GPS device categories like aviation. In covering many different models, it also accomplishes a lot of comparison between their user interfaces and other features. I like that it does a better job than Garmin's manuals of explaining how to think about the user interface - that is, the strategy behind it.There's also info on using Garmin software, and some explanitory info on things like DGPS and WAAS, the NMEA interface, external antennas, and similar related stuff. There's an entire chapter on secret keystroke sequences that access undocumented abilities (not that these are all that powerful). I would have liked more of this ancilliary information, more depth and variety, but did appreciate what there was.One unusual downside: this book may have the most typo's of any I've read. I bet there's about one per page, of the sort where another word is substituted ("use" instead of "user", "you" instead of "your") as if they only used a spell check. But that hasn't interfered much with using it.

I bought this so I could learn more about my etrex vista C. The book is a little out of date for the more recent GPSrs but is still generally applicable. I did learn many things from it. One thing, though, is that it tries to cover a very wide range of units, this leads to a lot of variations in the instructions and it gets pretty repetitive. There are also a large number of typos in the book. Things like "you" instead of "your" and "an" instead of "and." They clearly used a spell checker but didn't have the benefit of a good proofreader. This really didn't take too much away from the value of the book but it didn't improve it either. If you have a Garmin handheld then I would recommend this book.

I purchased the book after being asked to process GPS data from the Garmin devices at work. The book may be very useful in practical use of the GPS in the field as that was 99% of the content, but that wasn't my job. For processing data using the garmin program once you download the data, the book had a little over one page of advice. So if you need to use a Garmin GPS in the field, you may find this book invaluable. If you need to crunch the data once you get back to the lab, the book has no value.

A lot of information about GPS but does not cover my Garmin GPSmap 60CSx

EITHER I MISSED THE DATE OF THE PUBLICATION OF THIS BOOK OR IT WAS NOT IN THE DESCRIPTION OF THE ITEM. TOO OLD TO BE USEFUL. SHOULD NOT EVEN BE OFFERED FOR PURCHASE

Too complicated. I wanted a simple, how-to-use a GPS. Maybe, if I ever learn to use the GPS, it may be of some value. On the other hand, I may never use it.

This book explains clearly what GPS is, and throws in all of the when's, how's and what's. I learned more by reading a few pages of Dale Depriest's work than reading chapters in other GPS pubs.Well worth your money; go fot it!(I use the Garmin Rino 530 GPS Navigator with 2-Way Radio.)

This book is too much text and with 300 pages only has 37 pictures of very poor dot matrix quality. No step by step instructions. Much reading, very little learning.

There is certainly no need to buy this over-simplistic one-idea book--but I did find it inspiring and here are my notes in the context of other trend-following books... As a blackjack and poker aficionado before developing my investment interests, I am consistently amused by the level of superficiality that I find in the more reputable and PhD-replete field of stock market investing. However I might be mistaken on some points, because I only skimmed through any of these books, primarily looking for specific advice on when to buy and sell.A. Main points about the ETF Trend Following Playbook.1. This book promotes the idea of total reliance on the 200-day EMA (Exponential Moving Average) with such chutzpah, I tend to think there is something to this...? So, I expect to be disappointed, but it has gotten me interested in experimenting.2. The most glaring shortcoming of this book is that it lacks any additional parameter, even to distinguish one ETF from another, either technical or fundamental.3. Much of this book is taken up with cheerleading for "following the system" and "controlling your emotions." There are also more necessary chapters about "why" we could do better if we only owned stocks while they went up. Of course most investment books have this sort of cheerleading and perhaps most people need it. The main difference with Tom Lydon's book is that there is very little else.4. As several other reviews have pointed out--most of this book has nothing to do with trend-following, but is just a catalog of available ETFs, with no actionable advice or even any distinctive opinion about each ETF. Possibly this entire book was patched together by one of Mr. Lydon's secretaries as something to hand out in client meetings. I even disagree somewhat with those who say this is "appropriate for total beginners." For people new to ETFs, it seems to me that the indiscriminate inclusion of just about every obscure ETF would be unnecessary and confusing.5. However as an experienced ETF investor, I like this book as a handy reference with which to refresh and check my knowledge. For example, until skimming this book, it never occurred to me that trend-trading Forex ETFs might be a possible alternative to Forex trading.B. More speculations about Tom Lydon.I think it is important to note that Tom Lydon appears to be quite well respected. He only has a bachelor's degree but is the current editor of ETFTrends.com, "the no. 1 site for ETF news and commentary." Current president of Global Trends investment advisory firm. A founding member of Charles Schwab's Institutional Advisory Board. A board member for several fund companies. A frequent contributor to Forbes, The Wall Street Journal, Investor's Business Daily, Barron's, MarketWatch, Investment News and CNBC. Additionally...1. Apparently, Tom Lydon left his initial grindhouse position at Fidelity to form Global Trends during the 1990's. Apparently, Global Trends became a successful pioneer in emphasizing ETF-based investing. Thus resulting in his current position as a leading expert in ETFs.2. Investing in broad, unmanaged ETFs vs. "value investing" does not make much sense either in theory or for reputation--unless you believe strongly in the less-respected schools of "trend following" or "market timing."3. So, it seems very understandable that Tom Lydon is somewhat of a maverick in advocating "trend following." Somewhat paradoxically, he takes the conventional stance against "market timing." "Please don't confuse trend following with market timing... Market Timing is guessing; trend following is a mathematical strategy." (p. 45)4. Tom Lydon's supposedly mathematical proof for his simple system relies entirely on one study done on the S&P by a friend Werner Keller, president of a research firm. Keller's study suggests about 2-3 times greater returns than for buy-and-hold, and about half the maximum drawdowns, over two 40-year periods. However the resulting growth rate seems only about 8% annually.5. I can find no clear advice in the book about minimizing the overhead created by fees and slippage. If you make 12 trades per year, with an overhead of -1%, that is -12% per year. So if a short-term system only adds +4% annually, this is likely worthless. However Tom Lydon is hardly unique among short-term investment gurus in failing to be clear about this essential arithmetic. Such is the rule not the exception. Before becoming overly critical, let us look at Tom Lydon's book in the context of other trend-following books...C. My current sources of trend-following ideas, in order of priority to check out. (These are not recommendations--just the books I happen to have.)#1. ETF Trend Following Playbook by Tom Lydon. (Dotcom: ETFtrends.)Buy and sell according to 200-day EMA. This idea can be tested easily with a spreadsheet. There is no need to buy the book. Tom Lydon consistently and emphatically rejects any exceptions to his rule, even for leveraged inverse ETFs. Significant empirical evidence: one 80-year study of the S&P.#2. The Neatest Little Guide to Stock Market Investing by Jason Kelly. (Dotcom: JasonKelly.)This is primarily a long-term value-investing guide, which also uses market timing to know when to leave the market. Kelly suggests using leveraged ETFs, apparently claiming they have twice the upside as well as twice the downside. Perhaps I am mistaken, but I don't agree. I find they mainly have twice the downside. Instead of the single parameter suggested by Lydon, Kelly suggests combining the following three indicators for buy and sell signals.50-day SMA. Kelly seems to suggest 'buy' when crossing above and 'sell' when crossing below. (However he does not specifically say this, and his chart shows a 20-day SMA with only 'buy' signals.)MACD Histogram based on daily periods. Buy when crossing to positive, sell when crossing to negative.14-day RSI. Buy when moving up across 30. Sell when moving down below 70.Kelly is often wordy and is unclear. He seems to suggest a "buy" or "sell" when any two signals agree--but that a long-term strategy does not need to sell unless all three signals agree. Significant empirical evidence: none, except for one example showing that this strategy might have helped to avoid the brunt of the crash of 2008.#3. Sensible Stock Investing by David Van Knapp. (Dotcom: SensibleStocks.)Another "fundamental" value-investing system, also using "technical" indicators. Van Knapp has a chapter on "momentum trading" which applies only to "type M" stocks, with specific screening data on page 204. (4-wk increase > 10%. 13-wk increase >15%. 26-wk increase >20%. Revenue growth >10%. EPS growth >15%.) Among these, Van Knapp suggests to buy only stocks which have been trending upward for 3-4 weeks--and which score well on his Easy Rate system (chapter D-5). When to sell: at a trailing stop-loss of -10%. Van Knapp also has an interesting chapter, persuasively defending "market timing." Van Knapp uses the 150-day SMA (Simple Moving Average) of the S&P as one of eight major market timing indicators. Presumably, these indicators might be applied to ETFs. However Van Knapp does not discuss ETFs and makes no attempt to determine which indicators are more effective. So there is no telling whether the results of his equal-weighted system are significant--might be or might not. Moreover he does not suggest using market timing by itself, but only as an added confirmation to his other systems, or to determine how much of the total portfolio value to be actively invested. Significant empirical evidence: none.#4. Market Timing for Dummies by Joe Duarte. (Dotcom: Joe-Duarte.)Whereas Tom Lydon's "ETF Playbook" only has one play--the Market Timing for Dummies seems to be a true playbook for someone who wants to experiment with every method of market timing and of trend following. However it seems to me, you would just have to try everything in this book for a year before having a clear idea what to do with all this information. I was unable to find any attempt to suggest clearly which are the best methods, or how effective they might be, or to outline a beginner strategy. However the instructions for each strategy are quite clear and seem well worth testing out. Significant empirical evidence: none.#5. Trend Trading for a Living by Thomas Carr. (Dotcom: BefriendTheTrend.)Clear advice on trend-trading with stocks that have over twice the average volatility, and that appear to form long trends. This seems similar to what Van Knapp calls "type M" stocks. Carr then clearly details how to distinguish 5 "bullish" patterns and 5 "bearish" patterns, and how to determine a "buy" signal within each pattern. Carr's advice on when to sell is in chapter 11. Carr describes four methods both for protective selling of unprofitable trades and for claiming profits on profitable trades. However his favorite for both seems to be the Trailing Stop Profit of usually -8%. Carr claims that "studies show it is by far the most profitable." However he fails to reference any such studies. Significant empirical evidence: none.#6. The New Sell and Sell Short by Dr. Alexander Elder. (Author of international bestseller: Trading for a Living.)This seems to be the sort of book you might want to read after you are experienced in all the other trading strategies above. Otherwise, this book is difficult to follow. Seems focused on day trading and presents many ideas and techniques, while usually not giving any specific guidelines. Vaguely seems to endorse every popular style: both trend and counter-trend trading, both value buying and momentum buying, both systematic and discretionary. Elder seems to believe that different methods work better for different people. He himself prefers the freedom of discretion, and unlike Lydon, often advises to modify strategies based on "feelings." Four sell-point methods are described: at a moving average, using envelopes or channels (which I think maybe means Bollinger Bands), "support" and "resistance." Also insists on stop-loss orders, usually based on "previous low." Significant empirical evidence: none.

This book provides a good introduction to the world of ETF trading along with a strategy of utilizing a 200-day moving average strategy. It also provided a listing of some of the ETFs available in various sectors although since there are new ETFs appearing almost daily, the author cannot be faulted for not listing more of them than he did.The author's 200-day moving average strategy is certainly easy to understand for the reader but in his efforts to make it appear so simple, he seems to have left out some details that someone might need to know when attempting to implement it. For example, he recommends buying your chosen ETF when it crosses above the 200-day moving average and selling it when it falls below the 200-day moving average line. Simple enough. Unfortunately, he fails to indicate what to do if you're interested in buying an ETF that is already above the 200-day line. When would he recommend still buying it? He mentions that whipsaws can occur but he makes no recommendation as to whether a trader should wait to see whether an ETF that dips below the 200-day moving average line remains there or whether to simply sell and not look back.Although he does make mention of the use of stop loss orders, he makes no recommendations within the book about whether traders should put in a stop loss after an ETF drops by a certain percentage or not. I did visit his website and found that he recommends setting a stop loss at 8% below a recent high. In my opinion, this is the sort of advice that should have been included within the book, but I guess one of the purposes of writing the book was to increase visits to his website. For what its worth, I did visit the website and found it to be a valuable source of additional information regarding ETFs. I anticipate visiting it on a regular basis.

To call this book elementary would be an insult to kindergartners everywhere - this pamphlet disguised as a book has one idea and flogs it through 200 pages of obvious and basic information, available with a ten second search on the internet. The one idea is that investors should get into the market, or a security, when it rises above its 200-day moving average, and get out when it falls below. That's it! The rest is a listing of ETF's that anyone with an internet connection can find instantly, with a dash of self-promotion of Lydon's ETFrends site. To anyone who has studied the market for more than five minutes, this book is a waste of time and money. Apart from the 200-day MA idea, there's nothing useful about trends, entries, exits, risk, money management or any other investing topic.

Review

“Stark’s delightful narrative is proof that even though Astor didn’t leave the legacy he intended, his grand failure certainly deserves its own place in history.” (New York Times Book Review)“In Astoria, Peter Stark recounts the colony’s history as a fast-paced, enjoyable adventure tale.” (Wall Street Journal)“In his new book, Astoria ... Stark moves skillfully back and forth from one segment of the splintered expedition to another. He also raises a tantalizing question about the enterprise as a whole.” (Washington Post)“[Descriptive] passages . . . make Stark’s fine book truly distinctive. They raise Astoria above the level of a well-done historical adventure and help the reader get into a scene and understand the context or see relationships between participants and between then and now.” (Chicago Tribune)“Peter Stark’s Astoria is a vivid recreation of an era when the Pacific Northwest was a vast unexploited wilderness, with Astoria as its main American colony. . . . Stark is particularly strong in describing the wilderness and its effects on human psychology.” (Seattle Times)“Stark tells their grim story well . . . ‘Astoria’ is a well-written . . . account of John Jacob Astor’s attempt to found a commercial empire in the Pacific Northwest. It illuminates the cultural limits of the American approach to frontier expansion.” (Portland Oregonian)“In this harrowing historical tale of adventure and hardship, journalist Peter Stark re-creates a largely forgotten 19th-century expedition-during which one group crossed the Rockies and another sailed around Cape Horn-to establish America’s first colony on the Pacific Northwest coast.” (Parade Magazine)“A fast-paced, riveting account of exploration and settlement, suffering and survival, treachery and death. [Stark] recovers a remarkable piece of history: the story of America’s first colony on the continent’s West coast.” (Kirkus (Starred Review))“A page-turning tale of ambition, greed, politics, survival, and loss.” (Publishers Weekly)“New York businessman Astor, with support from President Jefferson, launched two expeditions in 1810 - overland and by ship ... and Stark recounts the perilous journeys.” (New York Post)

From the Back Cover

In 1810, John Jacob Astor sent out two advance parties to settle the wild, unclaimed western coast of North America. More than half of his men died violent deaths. The others survived starvation, madness, and greed to shape the destiny of a continent. Unfolding from 1810 to 1813, Astoria is a tale of high adventure and incredible hardship drawing extensively on firsthand accounts of the men who made the journey. Though Astoria, the colony itself, would be short-lived, its founders opened provincial American eyes to the remarkable potential of the Western coast, discovered the route that became the Oregon Trail, and permanently altered the nation's landscape and global standing.

The Astoria Expedition of 1810 to 1813 established the first permanent (non-Native) American settlement on the Pacific Coast. The expedition was financed by wealthy New Yorker John Jacob Astor, who dreamed of monopolizing the Western fur trade and raking in billions doing business with the Chinese. Astor planned a two-pronged attack on the West Coast, with separate parties traveling by land and sea to rendezvous at the mouth of the Columbia River. Following closely on the heels of the Lewis and Clark Expedition, the Astoria Expedition was every bit as epic an adventure as that earlier journey. Besides a lot of historical markers on the side of Western highways, however, the story of the Astorian pioneers, while once familiar to the American public, has since faded into relative obscurity compared to the legendary status of Lewis and Clark. With his 2014 book Astoria: Astor and Jefferson’s Lost Pacific Empire, author Peter Stark aims to resurrect this important story from American history and restore it to the prominence it deserves. In many ways, the Lewis and Clark Expedition, however arduous, was an example of a trip where almost everything went right. There was only one fatality, from illness. Conflict with the Indians was minimal. They never drifted terribly far off course. The Astoria Expedition, on the other hand, is an example where just about everything that could go wrong did go wrong, for both the sea-faring party and the cross-country trekkers. Internal conflict, an ambiguous chain of command, poor decision-making or a lack thereof, faulty wilderness survival skills, undiplomatic relations with the Native population, the outbreak of the War of 1812, and more all added up to a mission impossible with a high body count. Although Lewis and Clark’s crew suffered from hunger and privation, their troubles pale in comparison to the perils encountered by the Astorians. Stark does a good job of bringing these hardships to vivid reality, but he’s always a little too ready to shift focus back to Astor in his cozy Manhattan brownstone and praise the fur baron’s vision of global domination. Stark strikes a pretty good balance between happenings on the East and West coasts, but I would have preferred a little more of the microhistory of the travelers and their survival tales, and a little less of the relentless affirmation of Astor’s importance as a pioneer of globalization.Though several members of the Astorian land and sea parties kept diaries of the journey, there seems to be a lot less information available on this expedition than that of Lewis and Clark. Stark is forced to skip over periods of time or to resort to filling in blank spots with speculation. All historians do this to some extent, but one wishes there were a greater pool of primary source material from which to draw. Documentation was one of the primary missions of the Lewis and Clark Expedition, as it had specific scientific, geographic, and diplomatic mandates to fulfill. The Astoria Expedition, on the other hand, was largely a commercial venture, and its members were primarily focused not on exploration or diplomacy but simply on the getting there. In terms of an adventure story, the Astoria trip may be the grittier and more treacherous quest, but it lacks some of the epic grandeur and Enlightenment spirit of its predecessor.Stark’s book is an illuminating reinvestigation and compelling retelling of this important episode in America history. It’s also just a great wilderness adventure story. Anyone interested in Western expansion or the early exploration of the American continent will certainly find it an enjoyable read.

I did not just read this book. I devoured it. As review author Lawrence Gonzales states on the rear of the dust cover, "..gave me the sense all readers long for: that nothing exists but the riveting narrative unfolding in your head." This was exactly the way I felt reading this excellent book. I have explored the Columbia and Snake rivers including, the Columbia bar, Astoria, their confluence, Hanford Reach, Hells Canyon and east to South Pass (in astronomically greater comfort) and was exhilarated to realize I had trodden the very path of these explorers. I had never heard of this dual expedition before and I could not put it down. Peter Stark weaves a tale that is smooth yet detailed and covers relevant explanatory side paths . The fore and aft character descriptions flesh out the story wonderfully. Other reviewers have covered the book in detail so no need here, just read it. I don't know what I can read next that will surpass this book, whatever it is, it will anti-climatic..

Although I do enjoy historical books, my interests usually run to ancient history (usually European or Egyptian). That being said, I have also read some early American history (Lewis and Clark exploration, mainly) but I had never heard of this exploration and settlement driven by John Jacob Astor. That is why I chose to read this particular book. It was very interesting, sometimes scary, and really brought out the complete lack of communication that explorers had in that time period. Add that to all the problems and mishaps that occurred makes you wonder how anyone survived or took the time to make notes for future generations! The story, itself, ended rather abruptly but the notes that followed as well as what happened to all the people involved, added to finishing off the whole story.

Review While this book does not have quite the style and grace of a David McCullough, or the breathless wonder of a Stephen Ambrose, it is nevertheless a very readable interesting story of the beginnings of the "westward ho" expansion of what today is the United States. Of course, at the time (early 1800s) it was not the United States. The country was just established, and the war of 1812 would determine the outcome of the story told in this book. While I enjoyed enlarging my personal cache of American history, what I found most fascinating in this book is the way in which personality determined the outcome of aspects of the story. From Captain Thorn, war hero, whose dictatorial style turns out to be totally unsuited for the ship portion of the journey to the west coast, to Wilson Hunt whose leadership approach was based on consensus style worked well when the journey was going well, but failed when things got tough. The book is not sparing on brutal details. Exploration journeys were too frequently riddled with brutality and brute force. In other words, this is not a glossy history. But the fact that as humans we can be brutal, or the fact that Americans have been and can be ruthless--that should not surprise the reader or cause the reader to conclude that the book is not worth reading.

I can not begin to comprehend how much research went into compiling this book . I really appreciate how the author and editors put this little known history together. I have gone to Cape Disapointment and Astoria a few times but never heard anything about these early Astorians. All credit is given to the Louis and Clark expedition. I can only wonder what the American west coast would have been like if Astor had hired someone like Louis and Clark to head his hoped for empire . If a person is even a little interested in American history and early pioneering struggles they should read this book.
