Middleton has spoiled us with quality books, and "Manhattan Gateway" is no exception.This book contains a well-balanced selection of how and why this beautiful structure came to life, as well as the incredible engineering that made Penn Station possible.I am not a New Yorker or an American at all.. I live in Rome, Italy and the similarities with the baths of Diocletian and Caracalla is daunting.Middleton focuses on technical as well as architectural details and I strongly recommend this book to whoever is interested in either subject.Also noteworthy are the captions of how the Hell's Gate Bridge was constructed and how the "new" Pennsylvania Station will look like, returning this New York terminal to some of the architectural magnificence intended by the great architects Mc Kim, Meade and White (designers of the original station).If you like New York, especially for what was lost menially in this great city.. you will love this book.

Although "Cora Cooks Pancit" is likely to be viewed as a children's book by many, in truth it is much more than a children's story. For anyone who grew up in a Filipino family (I did not,though I am happily a part of one now) or who has made pancit or other Filipino dishes(I have) or simply grew up in a large, loving family, I believe that this book will feel more a memory from a childhood long ago than simply a child's story. Why? First, the author has wonderfully included shared memories from childhood- jobs given to older children, the longing by younger children to help, the chance to lick the spoon, etc. Secondly- the author has woven into the story specific details that authenticate the Filipino experience, e.g. lumpia and adobo, the size of the family and the names of the children,the description of the pancit pan, "salamat", the mother's experssion and reaction upon the spill, etc. More importantly is the inclusion of the reflections upon "Lolo"- his life as a boy in the Philippine countryside, his work with immigrant farm laborers, etc., all help to create a memory shared by many Filipinos today for cherished loved one long gone. Finally, the author's description of the creation of pancit is completely authentic and mirrors my own lessons from my Pinay wife- shredding chicken with a fork, soaking noodles, stirring in the ingredients, and finally sending carrots and mushrooms and chicken out of the all-to-full pot when stirring! I am sure I am not alone in these memories..Lastly, illustrations in this book accurately and wonderfully capture the Filipino persona (appearance, expressions, stance, smiles) as I have come to know it. The illustrator has also captured other details- the Filipino flag side-by-side with the American flag on the refrigerator, the tsinellas on the family's feet, images of tropical fruit on the walls, spoons and forks, but no knives on the table, and lastly, Cora's look as she awaits the response from her family as they try the pancit. I am sure I had the same look as I presented my first pancit to family and friends!I recommend this book unconditionally to children of all agaes who still remember what it was like to gain new responsibilities within their family.

I bought this as a gift for my 1/4 Filipina niece. The story is sweet and relatable, (we had pancit for Christmas dinner) and the illustrations are beautiful! The book itself (paperback) seems to be good quality and will probably survive her childhood. I'll buy this for my own kids when I have them!

This book is even more beautiful than I thought it would be! My students are from all over the world and it's so nice to finally find a book that has a Filipino character! The descriptions of the food are wonderful and my students connect with the story.

I love this book and the recipe that follows. Gave this to a friend of mine who also loves this dish because it's part of her culture. She has wanted a way to share this dish with her young children and loved this book.

Great story with great illustrations with bonus recipe in the back! It has such warmth in the story of a little girl who wants to learn how to help in the kitchen like her older siblings. It is a great story that features a Filipino family and would be a wonderful addition to any kid's library.

The book is in great condition, specially for a paperback. Definitely recommend for older kids, it's quite a long story. I wish there were more Tagalog words in the book.

We are adopting from the Philippines so I got this book for our bio kids to read, it’s one of their favorite books! They love to help me cook pancit now.

I bought this book for my 2 year old daughter to emphasize her filipino heritage, plus she loves eating pancit so it's easy for her to relate to. I thought it was a great story to teach my daughter the relationship between the food we eat and our family history. The story and illustrations are great. A board book would have been even better to withstand a toddler, but we just have to be more careful to keep it in good shape.

This book tells the story of Al-Andalus from the first penetration of Muslims in the 8th century til the final exile roughly 800 years later. In recent years, for modern reasons, Al-Andalus has been held up as a society of great religious tolerance that led to a great cultural flowering which was squelched when monomaniacal Christian kings re-conquered the Iberian peninsula and set everything back to the dark ages. I always felt this view was a little too rose-colored. This book comes from the same perspective and, in a neutral manner, looks at the whole picture, which is one of constant raiding and skirmishing and divisions and alliances within and between communities and cultures and sects. There was a great deal of realpolitik involved in the attitude of the leaders of one society toward others within it and without. Religiosity was often set aside, but not always. There was cruelty on both sides and magnanimity on both sides. Trust was provisional and short-lived everywhere. Equality was in short supply, especially as compared to slavery which was as endemic and vital to the economy of al-Andalus as the antebellum south of the United States.The history is told in a straightforward chronological fashion. The emphasis is on the geopolitical, i.e., who was in charge of what territory at any given time, and how the boundaries changed as time went on, which was, of course, through military conflict, conquest and defeat. As it is the story of Al-Andalus, it is mainly told from the perspective of the Muslim rulers, with the Christians very much in the background until the 15th century.My only negative response to the book is that it is a bit tedious to read. In its 400+ pages, there must be over 100 battles and over 200 rulers or pretenders. Every geopolitical development gets a couple of pages and then we move on to the next. It's a little repetitious, although I don't know how to tell it any other way in that amount of pages. If you've read any of John Julius Norwich's histories, say of Venice or Sicily, this is similar but a little drier. It's very non-academic and devoid of footnotes and endnotes, fbow. Also, for this Western reader, the author's fidelity to Arabic naming was a further obstacle, if you like to read fast, as I do; the Arabic rulers' names have a lot of similarity and I often had to slow down to be sure which of them the author was referring to at a given moment.

Not bad; scholarly + well written. But the author does not give proper sources for his information. For example, page 278 mentions that, the Jewish thinker Maimonides had feigned conversion to Islam, to emigrate to Fez. Where is Professor Catlos's source? I asked my Rabbi, an expert in Jewish history, a Rosh Kollel in a prestigious yeshiva, author of innumerable books, if that's true. The answer was, paraphrasing: 'It could be, but he never heard that'. Enjoyed reading this though, and was able to improve my vocabulary. Looked up the words animism, chancery, minaret, palatine, liminal, palanquin and dromedary.

I knew little about the Islamic period of Iberian history, and was much interested in learning what life was life. This book addressed my curiosity but spent much more time reviewing all the struggles for power, inter-tribal conflicts. Great to learn about the alliances between Christian and Muslim kingdoms, the accomplishments in economic development achieved during this era and the modernizing influence of Spain (Córdoba, in particular) that helped bring the rest of the Western World out of the "Dark Ages." Although Portugal is largely overlooked, it is a worthwhile read for anyone interested in Spanish history.

Great history of early medieval Spain and the complex interrelationship between Muslims and Christians. What I also found fascinating was the military career of El Cid.

Considering how for literally hundreds of years Spain was a changing patchwork kingdoms and shifting alliances, It would be quite the understatement to say that the history of Muslim Spain and the Reconquista is not easy to get a handle on. This is why I personally found Catlos to be such an absolute delight of a read. While his Middle Ages-spanning work reveals a time and land that is undeniably and fascinatingly complicated above all else, he does so in a clear narrative that makes this formative period on the Iberian Pensinsula easily accessible for anyone who wants to know more.

Cultural studies books about Japan too often wind up reveling in either Other-ness or kawaii-ness. Given that this book deals with the particularly trendy topic of robots, it's all the more refreshing that it steers clear of those Orientalist traps. It's a serious and worthwhile book, especially for readers interested in what the future will be like for those who live in Japan. The prognosis is not sunny.The author's (JR's) main themes are more connected to politics than to popular culture. JR closely examines a Japanese government manga called "Innovation 2025," promulgated in 2007 during the first Abe Administration. The story envisions a robot called "Inobe-kun" (from the Japanese rendition of the word 'innovation') integrated into an extended family (_ie_) not so different from the Yamato manga family promoted by Imperial propagandists during the Second World War. Among other things, robots are seen as a way to free women to have more children while working for "pocket money" by telecommuting from home. JR connects this vision to Abe's nostalgia for the authoritarianism beloved by his maternal grandfather, a member of the wartime Cabinet and later a peacetime prime minister.But it's not only Abe and his supporters who pull robots into this conservative vision: the attitude is shared by many Japanese roboticists, particularly in their reactionary and barely conscious approach to gender issues and disability. Japanese researchers seem to take it for granted that robots will be accepted into the home, and seem to emphasize a "build it, and they will come" attitude toward technical improvements without being very concerned about what users want. In line with the strongly marked gender roles in the _ie_, they endow robots with unambiguous male or female "cultural genitals," e.g. squarish jaw, square shoulders and exposed mechanical joints for "males" and a conical, dress-like form for "females." The first in a series of covers for the journal of the Japanese Society for Artificial Intelligence portrays a female robot doing housekeeping chores; over ensuing issues it comes out that "she" is the creation of a female roboticist -- who happens to be a single mom (cf. the ruling party's association between robots and childrearing). In a later chapter JR deconstructs Mori Masahiro's famous "uncanny valley," the notion that as robots become more human in appearance and behavior they first will be more repellent to humans, until the likeness improves sufficiently for them to be accepted. Mori's original 1970 essay in Japanese expressed a contempt for the disabled that has been laundered out of translated versions.Perhaps most depressing was the discussion of how a pair of Paro, therapeutic robots in the shape of a baby seal, were given a Japanese family registration (kouseki) because their "father" (creator) is Japanese. Meanwhile, persons of Korean descent whose families have lived in Japan for generations are denied both a family registration and an easy path to citizenship. As JR points out, whereas in some cultures robots are seen as distinct from humans, to Japanese roboticists, government and opinion-poll respondents, the relevant distinction is between Japanese and non-Japanese, with even non-humanoid robots being no different from humans when regarded in this light.I'm currently teaching an undergraduate course on robots and society at a Japanese university. The emphasis in the course is the recent field known as "robot ethics," which has been the subject of a couple of good edited volumes in the past few years. I experienced a momentary twinge of cultural imperialist guilt to learn from this book that robot ethics is a subject pretty much ignored by Japanese scholars. But this book's picture of robots in the Japanese techno-political imagination was sufficiently disturbing that I've decided that this is one cultural import that maybe can be a force for good. The book's one tip of the hat to the usual cultural studies preoccupations is its emphasis on humanoid robots. I'd have been interested to read about the role of industrial robots in the Japanese government's remodeling (i.e., gutting) of labor policy during the last 10-15 years, for example. But nonetheless I appreciate JR for seeing Japan as a serious country in its own right -- most foreign-domiciled scholars (and many foreign scholars based here in Japan) tend to see it as either some sort of morality play for the edification of Americans, Germans, etc., or simply as a curio. I give it five stars not because it's a book that will change your life, but because it does such an excellent job at looking beneath the surface of its chosen topic.
