My first book by General Jordan. A very complete account of General Forest 's actions during th War of Northern Aggression. Somewhat difficult to follow at times because the author uses city names to locate the battles but often does not provide the reader with the State name. If one wants to use maps to gain an understanding of the battlefield, the lack of position via State names can make locating the action difficult. The reader should understand that General Forest 's battles were most all fought around the Tennessee River including the state's of Tennessee, Georgia, Alabama, and Mississippi. Also the final battles were in southern Mississippi trying to defend the production facilities of Selma, Al. This is a very alive account of the terrible toll a war takes on personal liberties and the stalwart capabilities of Forrest's command. His leadership is beyond question and this book develops a very good portrayal of the man, the General, and the men who loved and fought with him.
This book is not a biography or even an autobiography, but written from a scribe or journalist of the time, who was with the General most of the Civil War. As such there is a lot of detail, movement of troops, and the canny ability of the General in his battle decisions and plans that determined the successful outcome. Anyone studying the history of this war will be acquainted with a born leader.
Very well researched but I little difficult to read as it quotes a lot of battlefield reports written in 1860's language which adds realism but requires a little more concentration to comprehend the text. Lots of descriptions (identifications) of different Armies, Battlelions, Companies, Regiments, Divisions, etc. which to some people it would add value, but I found cumbersome and frequently would speed read through.
I was on Amazon looking for maps of the Generals movements. .... stumbled upon this book..... written by his contemporaries, in the First Person....... I consider this the Bible on Forrest war years....My family and I used the 1862 West TN Raids as a driving tour and visited where he visited...... It is so meaty .... one can only read a chapter or so then .... lay it day for a week or more.... then come back to it......

A very comprehensive and thorough book. Written with first hand knowledge makes for interesting reading. Recommended for all historians, professional. and amateur alike.
The book was everything that I thought it would be. Descriptions of the actions and disposition of his troops written so close to the war provide the best information.
