I loved the Hal Leonard Guitar Books 1-3 but this book is so poorly printed I had to return it. The book itself is sized quite small with microscopic text making it nearly impossible to read and play at the same time. Also the binding is so poorly done that most pages are cut off on one side as the book doesn't open all the way to see the full page. Really disappointed.
I got this book for the song content rather than the theory as I am relearning rather than starting fresh. There's another book that looks the same as this that has the full songs I think but I actually preferred this for its cut down versions. I was hoping not to get bogged down learning the full version but to get the basic twelve bars under my belt and that is working well for me.The theory content seems OK for someone that has learnt basic cords, open and barre, and wants to learn basic techniques for lead playing. It starts off with some scales and then has a look at things such as hammer ons, pull offs, vibrato and slides etc with examples for them. It then builds to teaching short blues licks. Along the way it has the a variety of blues songs to learn with a brief blurb about the song as well as a track to listen and play along to once you start to get the hang of it. Once again I find audacity very helpful to slow the tempo while I practice and learn the song.I am finding this to be a great companion book for Blues Rhythm Guitar -- Master Class by Keith Wyatt. The techniques taught in that more comprehensive look at blues rhythm guitar playing pop up in the songs in this book and give you some practical application and context. Bass riffs, horn riff phrasing and fills and the like that are covered in the Master Class book all turn up in these songs.For someone that has got the basics of chords and some rhythm patterns under their belt, and is keen to learn blues rhythm and lead guitar, could do worse than getting this and the Blues Rhythm Guitar Master Class book.I would give this another star if it covered the pentatonic scales better. Eventually you'd want something like Blues You Can Use to learn scales more thoroughly and to start to develop your lead playing skills.
Re print format I did check out the "large" format from the library first, then purchased this. Overall I think this format is better, but on some of the denser charts you may want to scan & enlarge for best legibility.The book goes over some basics but you need to have mastered beginning guitar to get the most from this book. E.g. the first track after tuning notes is way beyond beginner level of chord change tempo, and it helps greatly to already know how to read music and/or tabulature.The tracks are fun to play with and well recorded and add a lot to the value of the package. If you get through the entire book, having "nailed" each exercise, you will in fact be "able" to go on to do more blues playing with considerably improved aptitude and awareness of various techniques and styles within the blues genres.
This is a very solid book on basic blues rhythm playing and a nice introduction to blues lead playing. I wouldn’t recommend this book to someone who has never held a guitar and is trying to self teach. But if you aren’t an absolute beginner this book will get you through the basics of the structure and feel of blues guitar. As an instructor this is a great book that can be used almost right from the very start after teaching just a few basic open chords.
The book was suppose to have a Audio with it and it didn't. I thought they weren't sold separately. The back of the book plainly says, book & audio not sold separately. Not sure if I will order from Amazon again.
very disappointed could not get any of the examples to play on my computer as I had a different operating system and it just didn't work!
I enjoyed the content of the book but as others have pointed out the size of the print makes this a no-go as far as recommending it. It's painful to use. Whomever made the decision at Hal Leonard to print this book (or any book with tab in it) at this size should be fired on the spot. I want my money back.
I bought this book a couple of weeks ago and is fantastic as all other Hal Leonard's books I have. It take you step by step into the blues. It's made for beginner to intermediate people looking to learn good blues basics.My only concern is that the others comes in bigger size, so I didn's figured out until I've got it that this one is small size... Amazon should warn about this.
