I picked this one up after hearing my pastor talk about it in a sermon. When I read a biography I really like to have primary sources in it and not just the biographer's interpretation of the person's life. It's amazing how much material Grubb obtained and how much the different people saved. After reading this book it's clear to me that Studd was a person of great passion and a disciple of Christ. I also was able to read the flaws in the man's walk and how he could be challenging to live or work with. Grubb does a very good job covering the first part of that tone. He lays out Studd's life pretty straightforward. Although, some of the areas he focuses on aren't particularly necessary and are sometimes just there to quote from a letter. While he's willing to highlight and extol Studd's positive qualities, he tends to glance over what are almost troubling items to read. Like the fact that he left his wife and went to serve in Africa or that his wife seemed to have a mental break and he continued to serve in Africa. And while, Studd was upfront with his wife about what to expect with their lives if she married him, it does not seem like the actions of a loving husband and shows wisdom in Paul's desire for some to remain unmarried in their service to the Lord. There are some amazing stories in this book and I've used some in my teaching. Studd had an amazing impact wherever he went and his work was indeed blessed by God. However, this book sometimes doesn't read quite right. Grubb seems to get caught up in the swell of the love for Studd, which is nice to see with a biographer, however some of the pages just drone on and on. Either that or statements or paragraph are written that have terrible flow and are disjointed. Because of this, this book took a long time to get through - and it's not that long. All that being said, I did enjoy this book and I have a respect for Studd because of it. The use of primary sources is amazing and the passion Grubb has for his subject is read throughout. Because of some disjointed text flow and an unwillingness to point out heavy flaws in the subject, it's a slower read. The danger in missionary books though is the threat of being bitten to serve. Studd's mentoring and passion for Christ and evangelism is inspiring. I believe this book is the best on the man you'll probably ever find. Final Grade - B-

This book showed me a pure life, fully dedicated to God in the person of C.T. Studd and his wife. He/they had joy. Joy is not what most of us in the 21st century have; it's peculiar, and this book revealed the mighty impact joy had on their lives.

This was an excellent biography written by the son in law of Studd. While I disagree with the victorious life mysticism of Studd; I recognize the valuable contribution he made to missions and opening the continent of Africa to the gospel. Even though many may also find some areas of doctrinal and spiritual life disagreement with Studd, nevertheless there are many aspects of his life and his commitment to Christ which are profoundly challenging. The reader should also be challenged by the remarkable sense of mission and self-sacrifice which characterized that generation of missionaries and has been sadly lacking in our current generation. A combination of both inordinate materialism along certain financial realities of our modern world has prevented numerous young people from taking on the challenge of fill commitment to the ministry of the gospel. But the reality is that the God who so abundantly supplied the needs of Studd, Hudson Taylor, and George Mueller is the same God today with the same infinite resources who can still abundantly supply whatever is needed to take the gospel to those who must learn the good news that Jesus Christ has paid the penalty for sin, and salvation is a free gift through faith alone in His redemptive work.

Everyone can grow in their walk and knowledge of their Lord and Savior from reading this book. Today, Christians know very little about sacrificing their life to follow the Lamb of God. C.T. Studd's life should be a rebuke to us all.

Great man!

"...God's ideal of a saint is not a man primarily concerned with his own sanctification: God's saint is 50% a soldier."This book is a call to battle in the greatest war of all, the war for the never-dying souls of people across the world!

One of my favorite books. Hebrews 10 calls on us to spur one another on to love and good deeds. CT Studd's life is still doing that today through this book. While he was an extraordinary athlete, he was still an ordinary person, but his life was used by God to have an extraordinary impact. I love that this book details what it was that fueled his fire for God, as it creates a category for God using the same scripture to motivate you to an extraordinary life. Let his fire for God melt your heart and start to burn with passion for God and those who don't yet know Him. Highly recommended!

Wow. What a life. Every Christian man should read this book. It is inspiring. I doubt one could read this book and walk away unchanged. It lights the fires of evangelism and stirs the desire to see God work. It is a testament to the faithfulness of God to those who will give Him their all.
