This is a fun book and just what I needed. I could see someone being either delighted or disappointed, depending on what kind of book they were expecting. First of all, this is a thin book, about 125 pages, about the dimensions of a thick magazine. It's not pages of detailed paragraphs of written instructions. This offers a general overview to get you started. It doesn't have plans or start-to-finish instructions with every detail. It's an illustrated idea and tip book, something you can open to any page and read a 'little of this or a little of that'. The illustrations are doodle-style with some little notes here and there, tips, and very basic how-to notes. Also offered are safety precautions, common tools needed, suggested hardware, etc.One of my favorite features of this book are examples of treehouses for one tree, two trees, three trees and four trees. I've been trying to pick which trees and how many to use and this helped me narrow it down easily based on my personal skill level and ambition. They also offer some basic styles of treehouses and how to go about building a platform, braces, adding a roof, etc. But again, all in an easy to digest format. They encourage reusing materials and show some examples of how the most basic treehouse can be made with scrap materials you might have kicking around. There's also more elaborate styles with trap doors, circular stairs and several levels. There are a few color pages in the center of the book, not many (four color pages with front and back photos, so 8 total), just enough for inspiration and to show a few examples of a house made in two trees, or a house with a deck, etc.I had an idea of what I wanted to make but only a very general idea of how to do it. This book filled in the gaps of my limited knowledge with basic and helpful info. There's also some random info, like how to install a pulley, best ways to make a ladder, how to make some basic kid-sized furniture, signs, trap doors, etc. Jeanie and David Stiles are both talented and knowledgeable on all things outbuildings: sheds, cabins, treehouses, gazebos, etc. I knew they'd be a reliable resource. I have another book by them on building your own cabin. That one is fun to browse, but turned out to be far too advanced for my skill level. But this treehouse book is right up my alley, and I feel confident now that I can build something simple and fun this summer.

This is a simple, easy to understand book about building tree houses. I bought it for my son since he and a friend decided they needed to build a tree house. Ironically, my husband hates to do this type of thing so I have had to figure out how to build a tree house! Since I have not building experience at all, this has been an interesting project. However, we are getting it done with the help of the book! It is still in process so I will let you know how it goes. I would not have known how to even begin if it were not for the help of this book!!

I really like this book because the plans are simple enough they really do look doable. Other books on this topic are so complex, you might look at them, but you wouldn't really think of taking them on. I have bought and given three copies of these books to give to my kids, and my grandchildren have really enjoyed having the books for inspiration.

Great book. Love the ideas and the organization of concepts. The only reason I gave it 4 stars rather than 5 is because I wish it had more photos. More ideas and maybe even suggest resources to get critical hardware. Overall a very good book and I'm glad I picked it up before I start my project for the grandkids.

This is the best book for dreaming! Our family loves to sit and look at this book together. It inspires all kinds of talks about what kind of tree house we hope to one day have. Whether we'll ever have a beautiful tree house similar to the ones depicted in these pictures, or not, the book has given us countless hours of warm friendly family time, just talking and dreaming together!

Really cool book. Lots of pictures and great instructions. I especially like that this book focuses a lot on teaching the kids how to build parts of their treehouses with things they find in the woods. Less lumber expense for mom and dad :)

The basic drawings, pictures, and instructions in the book provided this amateur with the necessary guidance to erect something that was not only FUNctional, but also safe enough for my kids to play on! ;-)If you're looking to build a tree house, and you're not a master carpenter, I recommend this book!

This is a super book with amazing photos, especially of tiny insects that you couldn't otherwise see. The text is written as two texts -- one is the story of a young couple and their garden, and the other is the story of the plants in that garden. How do plants communicate with each other? it's a secret...

This is a great Chrstimas present for any of you who have gardening friends. I loved it! It's also a great coffee table book.

If you have a sense of wonder that's insatiable this is the perfect one for you. If you need to awaken that wonder in someone, it's the perfect book.I can't recommend this highly enough...I'm just going to get more copies to give as gifts and spread the sense of awe that looking so deeply and clearly brings.Hooray David B!

This is the most annoying book I have ever read. The informational text is regularly interrupted by an inane conversation between two people spending the day in the garden. The conversation sometimes starts mid-sentence, making it very difficult to follow the line of thought in the text. Moreover, the author tries to make the topic more interesting by waxing poetic and calling mites little cars. Actually, the information is interesting on its own. and his feeble attempts to be "cute" or "special" make this book very hard to read and difficult to believe. I really wish that he had told the stories in a straightforward fashion and added a bibliography so I could follow up. As it stands, it is just a bunch of unbelievable gibberish.

This is a beautiful book that explores Christmas, Santa and the North Pole. The illustrations are well done and vivid. Looking for a wonderful tale of fiction for the holidays, this is an excellent choice!

I ordered this book at the beginning of December to give to my 3 y/o on Xmas eve. I will be adjusting the text so as not to plant the seed about non-believers.This is the 25th anniversary edition. It is supposed to come with a CD (attached to the front inside cover) and an ornament. MAKE SURE YOURS HAS THE ORNAMENT, YOU PAID FOR IT! The first copy I received did not come with an ornament so I contacted Amazon and they sent me a new copy. I received the new one today and it had the ornament attached to the inside of the dust jacket in the back of the book. You will NOT receive a bell ornament. The one that comes with this edition says "All Aboard!"

Had debated purchasing this book for awhile now. I am very glad I did. When I searched for the Polar Express book it was a little confusing as there were a few listings but they all had the same reviews so I was unsure as to what condition the product would be in when it arrived as some of the reviews had low ratings. The book arrived in great condition though and even came with an ornament and an option to download an audio recording. I bought the book to use as a Christmas display on my entertainment center. Very excited to be able to decorate now! Attached are pictures from the copy I actually received. Do not hesitate to purchase!

This book and movie are an obsession for my little boy. He would have me read him this every night before bed all year if I didn't tell him that Santa took it back to the north pole (along with all the other Christmas books) when he brought the presents. He still insists on watching the movie several times a week, because I wasn't slick enough to hide that. We're also going to ride the Texas State Railroad Polar Express ride this year, because the only thing he asked for for Christmas was to ride a train. He'll be 4 in December, so the magic is still very much alive for him.

They're not joking when they say "Big Book"! WOW! I should have looked at the reviews before purchasing, I certainly did not expect or need a book of this size, but it's beautiful and great quality.When this huge box from Amazon showed up, I assumed Amazon was out of smaller shipping boxes. My husband and I couldn't stop laughing when we pulled this book out of the box.This book is perfect for large audiences (classrooms). Depending on your size, you may need help holding and turning the pages - my husband is 6 foot and he would have benefited from having an assistant page turner.

I have love this story since I was a kid! When the book came out it was read to me and my class in elementary school every year if I remember right.I lost track of it over the years and always want my own copy of it. I love the movie also it brought it more alive! It kept the same art work in the movie as it did in the book. The magic isn't just in the story it's in the art work as well! Now I own the 20 year anniversary of the book and I will not open it. I downloaded it on to my kindle so I can read it that way. I would like to own the copy that has the bell with it but I will get it in my own time. Thank You for the wonderful art work and the story☺

Love this book and love the anniversary edition. I bought this book along with the train set for my grandson for Christmas. The book is beautifully written and illustrated and its a fantastic Christmas story that every child should have. I'm sure it will become a tradition for us to read it to him on Christmas Eve. I also purchased the train set for him to go under the tree each year as a family tradition. I'd highly recommend this book. Its great for girls and boys alike as well as the young and the old.

This was one of my favorite books growing up. I was shocked when I learned that my best friend had never read it and therefore her son knew nothing of it either. I clearly had to put a stop to this madness and buy it for them. The artwork is just as stunning as I remember and the story is just as magical. I honestly didn't even realize that it came with an ornament which is an absolutely beautiful bonus. I loved it so much that I bought one for my boyfriend as well. They did a really wonderful job with this anniversary addition. Needless to say, everyone is in love with the book. I mean, how could they not be? It's a must have!

 The book was quality printing. The ornament was a very nice touch on the tree. The free recording allowed us to listen to the book while turning the pages and having our hot chocolate. It was the start of our MEMORY MAKING of Our Polar Express Christmas which included this book and recording, the kids having parts in a Polar Express Inspired Christmas Play at Unity Church, a ride on the Polar Express to the North Pole to Santa and his workshop at the Florida Railroad Museum, and sleigh bells from Santa's reindeer left under the tree for each grandchild on Christmas Morn to be sure they "still hear the bell".

Not giving this short look at AIDS in Africa (and specifically, the experience in Nigeria, the author's home country) more than three stars feels a bit churlish. But however moving the individual stories it contains may be, the book itself is far from flawless.My principal problem with the narrative surfaced early on, when Iweala makes the case that the West has a difficulty in understanding Africa's AIDS crisis because we are blinkered by ages-old prejudices. Certainly, those prejudices exist, especially among those who have never spent any time in sub-Saharan Africa. But Iweala then proceeds to undermine his own case by showing that many of these preconceptions may have some basis in reality. For instance, he discusses the nature of sexual relationships as being more likely to be concurrent than consecutive (he talks to a man who defines fidelity to a girlfriend as cutting the number of his other girlfriends from eight down to four, and then only to one other woman, for instance.) Forget labels and judgments: as Iweala and the physicians he talks to for this book comment, that kind of approach is more likely to result in the kind of dramatic spread of AIDS that the world has witnessed in Africa. He doesn't want traditional African beliefs criticized -- and yet some of those, too, have negatively affected the lives of Nigerians with AIDS, as they are excluded from the community and shunned our of a kind of fear that AIDS is spread via some kind of miasma.Where does the line lie between the West patronizing Africans by offering assistance and offending them by not doing enough? Iweala refers to African HIV/AIDS activists and their belief that Westerners don't see African AIDS patients "as similar to ourselves and thus deserving of proper medical care." What popped into my mind at that point was the number of Americans I've encountered who view their fellow Americans (of any color) in a similar way: anyone imprudent enough not to provide for health emergencies isn't their responsibility, I've heard it argued. This is a human issue, not simply a West/Africa issue, sadly, although in the case of Africa it may be complicated by history. Still, it isn't specific to Africa; similar perceptions have taken root in Asia at times.I didn't expect Iweala to provide answers to any of these very difficult questions that lie at the heart of the relationship between Africa and the West -- but given that he raised them, I was disappointed he adopted what struck me as a narrower view. Had the core narrative been stronger, these issues wouldn't have niggled at the back of my mind as they did. Are the portraits of the Nigerians who are battling the disease moving and compelling? Absolutely. Are the tales inspiring. Certainly. Is Iweala's core message -- that we should see each other, positive or negative, African or Western, as humans first and foremost -- important? Without question. Of course we must work to cross these boundaries. But I wonder whether the people who will read this book and respond to that message have already accepted this? How many North Americans and Europeans -- those who are willing to listen -- are going to find that at all revelatory or fresh? Perhaps it's true, however, that some of those observations that I found to be self-evident -- that we all should help those struggling with HIV to simply lead their lives -- are those that bear the most repetition.What this book does do well is to provide readers with a compelling oral history of AIDS in Nigeria. The portraits of the individuals Iweala encounters are vivid and he does a great job of blending their stories with the necessary facts and figures. Nonetheless, Still, this book didn't accomplish nearly what it could have. By brushing away the difficult questions -- dismissing a CNN story of a town of AIDS orphaned children in Kenya as melodramatic (fair comment) and as being about Kenya and thus irrelevant because Africa is more than just Kenya (well, Kenya is a part of Africa... and the village did exist...) -- Iweala undermined some of what he otherwise accomplished in my eyes.This probably won't be a majority view, and that's probably just as well, as this is certainly a powerfully human book that deserves readers. Nonetheless, I remain underwhelmed.

I lost my best friend to AIDS in 1989, and I still miss him terribly. For years I was terrified of making friends with gay men for fear of losing them. I had lost three friends, and until the anti-retro viral treatments were available, I was worried all the time that other friends would be taken from me. After the cocktail that worked was readily available, my fears dissipated and now I have two friends with HIV/Aids who happily live their lives fully, without the fear (on their part or mine) that they will die a premature death. I've seen the fear it inspires, first hand, how some family members react and how miserable self-righteous prigs see this disease as a punishment from God. But, that was a generation ago. To read a book written today, that details all the crap people had to go thru who had HIV/Aids thirty years ago, as if it were breaking news, is mind numbing. I have known about the devastation HIV/Aids has caused to millions of people in different countries in Africa for almost as long as I knew about it here.Iweala wrote this book as if it's a relatively new phenomena that needs to be addressed. C'mon. Wake up. This is not new or news. What is important is how millions of people in Africa are denied treatments because of either cost or inaccessibility to locations that administer treatments (the latter situation wasn't even addressed in this book).There are snippets in this book that are compelling, but mostly it is dated material, poorly and very defensively written. Iweala constantly bemoans how we clump all the people and all the countries in Africa together and make grotesque generalizations. Make that point and move on.I did, however, love the title of the book. Essentially, it asks, who gets HIV/Aids. And the answer is: People like us. Viewing the crisis that way keeps us from treating those people who are positive as "the other".

About the Author

Etienne Geraert was Zoology Professor at Ghent University, Belgium. From 1974 till 1998 he was also Associate Editor of the International Journal Nematologica (now Nematology) where he was responsible for the articles on morphology and taxonomy. Alberto Bin holds a PhD from the Institut des Hautes Etudes Internationales in Geneva, Switzerland. He is the Deputy Director of the Mediterranean Academy of Diplomatic Studies, University of Malta, and holder of the Chair of Mediterranean Diplomacy and Relations. He is also visiting professor at the Department of Political Studies, University of Catania. His research interests include Italian foreign policy, and issues of security and cooperation in the Mediterranean and Middle East.Richard Hill holds a PhD in statistics from Harvard University and a BS degree in mathematics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He has worked for the National Bureau of Economic Research and other organizations as a statistician and an economic analyst, and has taught at Webster University in Geneva, Switzerland. He has visited the Middle East several times.Archer Jones is Professor Emeritus at North Dakota State University. He also served as director of the Institute for Regional Studies which sponsored research and served as the University's press. He is author of numerous articles on military and economic history, and he jointly authored three award-winning Civil War books. His books include Elements of Military Strategy: An Historical Approach (Praeger Publishers, 1996).

basis for war strat. quick. superior tech, traing, organization. Excellent leadership. More american service members would have died in traffic/household accidents if they had not been deployed.Big fan of "Shock and Awe"....especially when mixed with "underpromise...overdeliver"

Very well written. Starts a little slow with much preliminarybut fascinating information about the international politicsleading up to the war. After that starts a day by day account of the war and most major battles. I especially liked the manybehind the scenes personal interviews with pilots, Iraqi officers, tank commanders, etc. about their experiences,Many " stories never told" . It was riveting. Very well researched, unbiased & hard to put down.
