This book was absolutely amazing....it touched my heart and it pulled me in..and I did not want it to end.... I could not believe how two different Amish communities can be so different. But I love to learn about them. MARY, Levi and Natalie and Adeline were the main Characters in this book..and you will fall in love in love with them...Beth this was the best book ever...thank you for the gift of your writing...your the best...Annie Houghtaling

My thoughts:Beth Wiseman begins her latest series, An Amish Journey with the beautifully crafted and aptly titled Hearts in Harmony. What a selfless journey Mary, Levi and Natalie take as they form an unlikely friendship that is built on compassion and respect for their elderly friend Adeline. I absolutely loved the different ages, faiths and backgrounds of the main characters and the bond they formed while giving so much of themselves to one who really needed them.I became emotionally attached to the characters but Levi was my favorite and the one I wanted a lifetime of happiness for most of all. I loved the way Mary and Levi are reunited as young adults after a chance meeting when they were children and yet very little has changed because they both still love music which is forbidden in their strict districts. The author portrays them as respectful talented people who want to play music and sing Christian songs but yet want to remain true to their values and beliefs which is a very fine line for them.The storyline is an emotional one that at times had me smiling and at times in tears and most importantly made me realize that the author clearly writes quality Amish fiction. This is one of my favorite books penned by Beth Wiseman and I cannot wait to read the second book in the series. I highly recommend this 5-star book.I received a complimentary copy from the publisher and was under no obligation to write a review. All opinions are my own.

This is the beginning of a new series by Beth Wiseman, and if this book is any indication, it’s going to be a wonderful series. It was refreshing to read a book in which the younger generation sacrificed their time and resources to honor a member of the older generation. Mary, Natalie, and Levi came together to help Adeline, a senior citizen who desperately needed their help. A strong bond of friendship develops among the four. There’s also a budding romance between Mary and Levi, which only adds to the sweetness of this story. Mary and Levi are Amish; Natalie is an Englisher; and this sets up a nice theme of working together and truly respecting their different lifestyles. There’s also another theme of following God as He leads, even though it might not be in a direction that was hoped.There’s some struggles in this story, too. There’s economic differences between Mary and Levi’s families, as well differences in lifestyle in their Amish communities. The author did a great job of handling all these differences in a gentle way which made this book all the more appealing. Not all the loose ends are tied up at the end of this book, and I’m looking forward to following this series to see what happens with some of the main characters.

The newest book from the author is a like a sweet melody with words. Her characters blend well together and capture a story of friendship and love.The Amish have very different beliefs than most and I found it amazing that they weren’t allowed to play an instrument. Levi has secretly played piano since he was a child. His hands sweep across the keys with compassion, but he starts to wonder if he is going against what the bishop has said. It would be so hard to have a gift but not be able to use it. I liked how Levi continually asked a God to show him if he was to play or walk away from it in order to be obedient.Mary is a wonderful young woman who has known Levi since they were children. I liked how Levi and Mary reconnected after years apart. They have come back together to help out sweet Adeline. Oh how I loved this elderly woman. She was my favorite character because she had so much love to give. She has been lonely for awhile and when these young people show up to help her, it made my heart fill with joy.Natalie is a little more complicated and I struggled at times trying to like her. She is sent by her mother to spend time with Adeline, who is related to them. It doesn’t hurt that she begins a friendship with Mary and Levi as they get together on Saturdays to do chores for Adeline. As she started to spend quality time with Adeline I could feel her heart soften .The ending of the story is filled with emotion and shows how valuable it is to reach out to others in their time of need. Adeline not only brings three young people together but gains a family in the process. Her heart is happy as they bond and become like her children. I won’t spoil anything but I will say this is the best book I’ve read by the author. Her heart and soul went into this story and I can’t wait to read the next book in this series.I received a copy of this book from the author. The review is my own opinion.

If you follow ultrarunning at all, you're familiar with Kilian Jornet. He's only 25, but he has already won the Ultra Trail du Mont Blanc 3 times, won Western States, and set the record for the ascent/descent of Mt. Kilimanjaro. He's a phenomenal runner and an inspiration to those who see him run.Unfortunately, the inspiration has a hard time coming through in his new book, Run or Die. Reading Run or Die is certainly an interesting experience, essentially a stream-of-consciousness race report on some of Kilian's big runs: his trans-Pyrennes run, UTMB, WS (his first race there, when he came in third), and his Mt. Kilimanjaro run. We read the blow-by-blow of the runs, as well as his reflections on life and running.For me, Run or Die misses the most important element of a running book: inspiring me to get up and run. Rather than feeling like, "Wow! That's a lot of running! I want to go run now!" I felt like "Hmm. That guy runs a lot. I don't think I can run like that. What's for dinner?" I realize this is more a reflection on me than on Kilian, but I have read plenty of running memoirs that inspire me to lace them up and head out the door.Kilian will be fun to watch as his career continues. It seems like he has what it takes to dominate the sport of trail running for many years to come. I will be interested to read his next book, maybe 5-10 years down the road, when, I think, he'll have more to share.Thanks to Edelweiss and the publisher for the electronic review copy!

This book is memoir by arguably the top ultra-runner of his generation. If your looking for time splits, tips on interval training, how to run hills then keep looking, this ain't that book. This is about a person who approaches races as " journeys" and who basically is so talented he invents challenges for himself...like running around the rim of Lake Tahoe in one shot or if he can across a pryennes mountain range in 7 days.I think the big take away is that it's not what place you come in but the journey. For example, There is an entire chapter devoted him breaking the fastest accent and decent of mt. Kilimanjaro and the reader never finds what the old record was and by how much did he beat it by.The one thing the book does is give the reader an idea of the amount of suffering takes place as he is accomplishing these feats. one assumes that people with genetic disposition to run don't suffer during a race or " journey" but you would wrong. My opinion the best chapter is about how he overcome all his misery to win the 2012 western states in a sprint.the guy is about 24 or 25 and it kind of shows. I admire his outlook on running...creating art through exhurition. the book is not going to be a roadmap to how you can be a better runner but it does give you insight to what true passion for running is about.

I've become deeply involved in ultra running over the past year and have read +15 books about it. Killian's Run or Die is down on the list as one of my least favorites. It's extremely artsy and wordy, describing in deep detail his experience he has while running. I was actually hoping the book would be like this, but its very sporadic and jumps around from his early childhood to his FKT attempts. He is an amazing runner and I am always impressed by his videos on YouTube, but as a writer he didn't win the race.I recommend it only to the very involved ultra runner, as it does bring in some interesting experiences and questions we ultra runners all have. If this is one of your first running books you've picked up, put it back on the shelf for a later day. Worth reading but not if you are trying to get into the sport.

Kilian Jornet is, arguably, the world's greatest ultramarathoner. But he is not, at least at this point in his life, as gifted a writer as he is a runner. In a short 180 pages, Jornet gives the reader a sense of why he runs but if you are looking for an explanation of _how_ he runs --- the nutrition, training, rest, etc. --- then you'll be disappointed. What you do learn, though, is that running, skiing, and connecting with nature are at the core of his being. In the chapter about his record-setting run of the Tahoe Rim Trail he and his pacer get lost and have to back-track but rather than lash out or sink into depression, Jornet remarks, "more miles, more smiles!" For him, it seems, it is all about the miles.

No doubt one of the most extraordinary athletes ever, but really not a great writer. As other reviews have said, this is not a ‘how I do it’ kind of book, and I found it hard to engage with his presentation of ‘why I do it’. If you’re a fan of ultra running, Born to Run and Endure are far far better. If you’re a fan of Jornet, which I am, it’s a lot more fun to just read race reports.

I am not into ultra running and had never heard about Kilian before seeing his book on the shelves, but I had expected some more depth or details/ statistics before reading the book. Although I find he attempt to dive into the concept of winning and competing, he should probably have filled it up with some few more hard facts to make it more interesting etc.

I think something must be lost in translation, it is an interesting look at Kilian's running and skiing through his eyes but the translation leaves the book wordy and over describing the environment which makes it a bit of a bore to read. I can relate to his excitement, pain, ups and downs, and grueling fatigue from long days running which is when I feel most connected but I think the native version of the book must read a lot better because the wordiness of the description of the environments left me skipping ahead a lot to get to the good stuff.

Despite the language barrier, Kilian does a great job of putting you in the driver seat for some of his toughest runs. I love Economics, Business, Finance, as well as Sociology and Social Economic books.I read about 1-3 books per week.But, be that as it may; this is ONE of the few books I just couldn't finish.It looks like a great idea, but the author jumps around a lot, and just touches on the surface of many topics.I made it about 3/4 of the way through and I just got tired of wasting my time on this useless tripe when I could be reading something more pithy.

In this mediocre book, Porter re-hashes much of what we already know about socio-economics. Summaries of classic pricing problems: statistical lives, psych experiments. Skimming along the surface without diving into analyses. Anecdotes such as the cost of global warming depends on your discount rate. Well, why do we pay what we do? What is a reasonable discount rate? Why? none of these questions are addressed. The first few chapters are worth reading, the rest is disapointing.

When I was young in the 50's and '60s, I found some correspondence between the price of things (outside the luxury trades) and what they cost to make. Over my life this connection seems to have ended, and this book helps explain why and the myriad factors that have to be addressed to restore some reason in our economy.

I picked up this book thinking it was a business/marketing book, but it wasn't exactly. The title of this book along with its tagline is very misleading.By the end, you start to wonder exactly what "Mystery" the author was trying to solve. The book doesn't tell you the 'price of everything'. It merely tells you that everything has a price. But I already knew that.The word "Price" in the book's context is a symbolic price, not the actual monetary unit as in marketing or business terms. So it's more like 'the price we pay for our actions', 'price of doing good', 'price of doing bad', etc..For the most part, the book is a collection of very opinionated conclusions supported by some statistics.While the book had some interesting parts, it's not as enjoyable to read as say, Malcom Gladwell's books. The author needlessly uses obscure vocabularies and awkward conjunctions to describe something very simple and trivial. He does this throughout the whole book. It felt almost as if the author chose to use such rarely used words just to boast that he knows them. This type of writing style results in very fragmented reading experience and takes lot of enjoyment out of reading.

This book starts out with promise but falls victim to the problem found in many books written by journalists: it's too much on the surface. Without the analytical chops to back up the theories he proposes (contra someone like Tyler Cowen or Dan Ariely), Porter is left quoting experts. That makes it a second-hand analysis, and won't be able to give you any new insights. That's not so much of a criticism as it may sound - if you don't want to slog through the primary source materials then this will give you a great overview of a lot of topics. The thing is, a person who can't draw conclusions of his own in an area, that person can't provide a whole lot of new information or insight other than what their sources tell them. They can't necessarily judge who is right.That said, the prose is clear and concise, and the text covers a lot of areas. If you are interested in socioeconomics and want a general introductory text, this will provide a great introduction. But don't judge this book by its cover. And although I hate reviewers who do this, considering the title... this wasn't a $16 book, it should have been $10. It doesn't provide enough extra value to warrant the premium price.

With the Cartesian logic that Porter has accustomed us to expect from him, here comes "The Price of Everything", a fun and exhaustively documented book that uncovers what is behind the many decisions that we make, be they political, personal or other. Or, in Porter's own words: every choice we make is shaped by the prices of the options laid out before us.I can't imagine a better way to make a story from so many studies, statistics and numbers of all sorts.

Backed by an apparently inexhaustible supply of hard facts and well-interpreted statistics and data laid out in a terse, absorbing style, Eduardo Porter posits in `The Price of Everything' that prices exert a profound --and sometimes determining-- influence on many of our individual and collective actions, and on why and how we do many of the things we do.I agreed with or was convinced by most of the book's arguments and assertions -- but even those who do not share some or all of Porter's viewpoints should find `The Price of Everything' a very enjoyable reading experience. I find most books on economics arcane, dogmatic, pedantic or plain dull, but this is not the case with Porter's opus prima. The writer has a knack for illustrating his arguments and opinions with highly accessible and interesting examples. In addition, he does so without sacrificing an iota of rigor in the analysis of his data and the development and presentation of his postulates.In short, a book well worth reading.

One of the most interesting and relevant books I've read in a long time, it has helped me understand and question existing beliefs, habits and policies.

Once again, I fell in love with another Sarah Price book. I love all her books. A good life lesson-you may have your heart set on one path but if you open your heart, pray and follow God's plan you will be happy. Sometimes we have our mind set on a "dream" and then real life happens and we need to let it in. I can't wait for Carolyn's Quilt! Keep them coming Sarah!

I’ve read book one and two sitting in our travel trailer in Ohio’s February cold, camping! Warm blanket, hot beverage and well written, plotted and thought out stories of best friends, what could be better? The third book in the trilogy! Keep Writing Sarah Price! Waiting for the next trilogy!

Becky and Stephen’s story is truly amazing. Becky had made up her mind what type of man she would marry. When Stephen meets Becky he knows that she is a very special lady. Watching these twos relationship change is truly remarkable. The characters in this book are all very special people. You will feel God working throughout this whole book.

This was another wonderful book by Sarah Price. I really enjoyed how you used love to see how sometimes we aren’t sure of what we really want and what God wants for us.

We all have our own ideas of how thing should go. Dream of a life we want and then someone special come along and we struggle to fit together without losing our self. Love will lead us if we listen to God talking to us. Great story with strength of faith.

This was such a great read and deserves the five stars! Reminded me so much of how we can be so caught up with what we want and the plans we make that sometimes we don't see or hear what God's plans are for us.

For some reason I have become interested in Amish stories. I’m from Iowa and we have some Amish there, I also enjoy making quilts. I’m not very good at it but I keep trying. So when I find books with an Amish storyline I have to read it. Thank you Sarah Price, you are becoming one of my favorite authors..

Interesting text book/novel. Rather than explain technical terms about process flow and constraints, a middle aged manager discovers them himself while going through a divorce and possibly facing his plant closing. Not sure this would teach someone from scratch what a bottle neck was or what throughput is, but it certainly brings it to life. Not exactly a riveting novel either, but I was glad that our friend Alex got a happy ending all around so some investment in characters. I am a big fan of real life problems instead of dry formulas for explaining things so this really satisfies on that level

It is interesting that I already had this book in my hands three times and realizing that it was about manufacturing I just kept putting it back on the shelves of bookstores. What could be interesting or relevant from a book about a manufacturing plant that I could apply to my own interest that is healthcare management? But then a consultant came to help us and when I asked him about his most favorite books, he recommended this one. So fourth time is a charm, I finally bought it on Amazon. It was a most pleasant surprise. Discovering that the one and only Goal of any business is making money and this could only be achieved by a smooth Flow of the production and our most important management task is to prevent any resistance slowing it was eye opening. It is ironic that main character Rogo's competitor, Smyth seems to be a fanatic of various metrics and data while ignoring commonsense approach that mysterious mentor Jonah dispenses or induces intermittently. It is also ironic that I see an all too familiar approach of a local hospital in healthcare delivery. Management here seems to be mesmerized by metrics while ignoring a more commonsense and human-centered approach. Yes, they are fascinated with speed, but fast does not necessarily equates harmonic and quality flow. It would have been so great if Goldratt had a chance to provide his insights into healthcare! Closest he got to this is possibly his book about retail, "Isn't It Obvious?". In any case I am moving on to his book "The Choice" with great anticipation.

I am reading this having already read Gene Kim's "The Phoenix Project." As you might expect, I am in IT - so why read this? In short, I think the novel does a fantastic job of introducing the down-sides of "Taylorist" management approaches, even in manufacturing, which is what Taylorism was developed for in the first place. By presenting the material in the form of a novel with a clear narrative path, it presents the basic ideas and some of their most important implications in an easily-digested and enjoyable way. You can then go on and read some of the excellent nonfiction literature on Lean that is targeted at your type of business and start with a intuition about where things can go, making that literature easier to digest and understand. (As an example, I read Reinertson's excellent "Principles of Product Development Flow" before reading this. I understood in an "I can apply these ideas" way about 30% of the work, and kinda-sorta got the rest. AFTER reading this book and seeing a bigger picture, much more of his theory makes sense to me in a way that I can actually use it now.)The book has a few dings against it - mostly simply that it is dated. The deteriorating relationship with his stay-at-home wife is realistic for the time in which the book was written - but it smacks of 1986 now. (This from a guy who got married in 1986...) While it is a bit of a distraction, it does help the book make the point that improving things at work in the right way can and does improve people's outside-of-work lives in very real ways. You will not get that empathetic viewpoint from the nonfiction literature on the subject, so the inclusion is still a strength - it is just that the content has not aged all that well.On the positive side, it swings into other ideas too. The discussion of how traditional accounting rules and consequential financial controls can create a set of counterproductive incentives is telling, and presages by a couple of decades the work being done now in the Beyond Budgeting movement. So it is a great jumping-off point for that too.Both this book and "The Phoenix Project" are pretty easy reads. If you gun through both over a weekend or two you will be able to see how the principles of Lean developed in manufacturing can be applied to other kinds of work.

This is one of the best business books I’ve ever read. Definitely in my top 5 along with Good to Great, The Leadership Challenge, Visioneering and Crossing the Chasm. If you do anything in manufacturing, distribution, production, supply chain management or are trying to improve operations, READ THIS BOOK! You won’t regret it. It’s applicable the minute you finish it. And because of the way it’s written, you won’t forget the primary points of he book.

About the Author

David G. Benner (Ph.D., York University; C.Psych., College of Psychologists of Ontario) is professor of psychology at Redeemer College. Dr. Benner serves as chief psychologist for a children’s mental health center and is the founding director of the Institute for Psychospiritual Health (www.redeemer.on.ca/~iph). He has written numerous books, including Strategic Pastoral Counseling and Care of Souls. Peter C. Hill (Ph.D., University of Houston) teaches psychology at Grove City College; he has published a number of scholarly articles.

Extremely helpful resource for psychology from a Christian perspective. Entries usually cover: 1) the history of the subject within the field of psychology; 2) contemporary thoughts on the subject (keeping in mind the book was put together in 1999); and what the Bible has to say about the subject. As a Christian reference, the book is very valuable. For an undergrad psych major, the book is nearly invaluable. Great as a stand alone purchase or addition to the Baker Reference series, if you're still trying to collect all of these phenomenal yet now out of print works. As a side, there is 1985 version of the book ( Baker Encyclopedia of Psychology) that sells for much much cheaper than this one. Might be worth checking out if you want to see if the book is worth the $50-60 people are charging for this one.Other helpful introductory psychology books include: The Psychology Book (Big Ideas Simply Explained),The APA Dictionary of Psychology, and Modern Psychotherapies: A Comprehensive Christian Appraisal (Christian Association for Psychological Studies Partnership).

A treasure trove of balanced views on the human condition. I have found myself going to it again and again in my work. Excellent.

I confess I wouldn't have completed my undergrad counseling degree at a Christian college, John Wesley College, without having this book as a reference. Nor would I have completed my MA in Marriage & Family Therapy at Reformed Theological Seminary without the insights on every topic within the Baker Encylopedia of Psychology & Counseling (and its previous edition). No other reference book has the extensive data on everything plus a non-denominational Christian frame on the counseling and psychology topics therein. Overall, it proved itself to be "fair and balanced" between the secular and Biblical perspectives. Whenever I seemed stuck on how to start a research paper or how to understand a psychological concept (like Indirect Hypnotherapy), this book was a godsend. I do have one regret ... I never secured an invitation to contribute an article in it. I'd have been honored to associate my name with it! Highly endorsed!

This book is great for references especially for students needing help with Religion, counseling, and Bible college courses.
