I am terrible at math. I have a lot of trouble understanding heparin questions. I bought the kindle version on a .99 cent special and decided to give the book a try because I need to learn this stuff for nursing school, maybe this will be the book to help me. This book has helped me gain a better understanding of how to read a question first, break it apart into what I need and then how to solve each question based on the type of question. I have recommended this book already to all the nursing students in my cohort, I definitely recommend this to anyone who is struggling with drug dosage and needs it explained in a way that's easy to understand. Math is hard, why make it harder?I'd like to add that I just got a 100% on my drug dosage exam after using this book for a week before my exam.

Iâ€™ve been following one of the authors of this book, Bradley Wojcik, on a Facebook group since I started prerequisites for the nursing program over a year ago. I noticed every time someone asked about dosage calculations he was there with a super simple explanation. I actually wrote his name down on a piece of paper and taped it to my refrigerator so I wouldnâ€™t forget who to ask when I finally got to nursing school. Two weeks ago I got my acceptance letter and wanted to get a jump on things so started searching that group for dosage calculations and found out Bradley has a book out now. I ordered it and am making my way through the exercises with extreme ease. I canâ€™t believe how easy they make these calculations! I would recommend this book to anyone starting nursing or pharm tech school!

This book is the best. I had been stressing out over my doseage calculation test for nursing school and this book gave me peace.The chapters are very short and easy to read. No mind numbing explanations. It gets to the point and will have you doing doseage calculations in a very short period of time. It was well worth the purchase.I have purchased other expensive books and checked books put at the library and they don't compare to this book.It teaches Dimensional Analysis and the Formula Method, perfectly.

With the responsibility of medication administration being solely given to the nurse, this books really breaks down all you need to know to get those meds passed without mistakes. There are a lot of examples worked through the book and a lot of practice problems at the end of each section. If you are having issues with dosage calculations, this book will take the fear out of it and help you succeed! I especially like the "Tool Box"!

I was lucky enough to be the first ones to experience this book. I love that the authors have made conversions and the dreaded nurse math (dimensional analysis) so easy to understand. I'm excited to get further into the book and ace all my pharmacology dosage exams. Thank you, Chase and Brad!

A career diplomat for Portugal, Sousa Mendes was brought up in an aristocratic and pious Roman Catholic family. It is worth struggling through this stilted translation of the less-relevant first part of his life to learn about the heroic conviction he developed at the age of 55 to defy his superiors in order to save the lives of refugees from Nazism. In 1939 refugees flooded France, trying to obtain visas to Portugal, a neutral country during WWII. Portugal's prime minister, who did not want to alienate Hitler, issued "Circular 14," which effectively prohibited Portuguese consuls from fulfilling a "centuries-old tradition of hospitality" and, in explicitly excluding Jews, "officially introduced a hitherto unknown element of racial or religious segregation into the question of immigration." Finding this policy utterly unconscionable, Sousa Mendes, Portugal's consul general in France's temporary capital of Bordeaux, issued several passports to those fleeing France, and then, overwhelmed by the situation, took to his bed for three days. When he got up, he told his wife (who supported his actions) and children that God had instructed him to obey his conscience. Sousa Mendes set up a virtual assembly line and signed visas for the hordes of refugees who soon swamped his office and residence. He was eventually dismissed from the foreign service without a pension and died in poverty in 1954. Posthumously honored by Israel, he without doubt saved the lives of ten thousand Jews. A Parisian journalist for Le Monde, Fralon tells the story of Aristides de Sousa Mendes, the Portuguese consul to France who saved thousands of Jewish lives during World War II. The book begins with Mendes's childhood, family, and career. In addition, we learn about Portugal's "neutral" policy of the time. In spite of this policy, Mendes continually assisted refugees with food and shelter but most importantly by signing thousands of visas so that they could leave the country, saving many Jews from the concentration camps. Mendes was then forced to retire, living for years in poverty. It was not until the 1980s and 1990s that his actions were officially recognized as heroic by Portugal. Mendes was not the only man to assist refugees with visas, but he is part of a small, courageous group that includes Sweden's Raoul Wallenberg and American Varian Fry. This book is written in accessible language and provides a memorable account of a man who stood up for what he thought was right. Recommended for Holocaust and World War II collections. The biography of Aristide Mendes Souza is an important one for the whole world to know. He is not the only person to have defied his country and thwarted Nazi intentions, but his heroism brought him and his family terrible damage. Under the dictator Salazar Mendes Souza's tragedy went beyond the Second World War and continued deep into the second half of the 20th Century. Having saved the lives of 30,000 individuals, including 10,000 Jews, Israel names him a Righteous Man among the Nations and Portugal and the United States honored him in many ways. The book is a praiseworthy addition to the honors which the Portuguese consul in Bordeaux received. A great many sources were tapped, among them previous writings by others, interviews andofficial government documents. A very interesting text.

Dr. Aristides de Sousa Mendes (1885-1954) who served as Consul General of Portugal in San Francisco, CA from 1921 to 1924, risked everything -- his career, his family, his reputation, his savings, everything -- to save over 30,000 World War II refugees fleeing Nazi-occupied territories, 10,000 of whom Jewish, by providing Portuguese visas as Consul General of Portugal in Bordeaux, France. He, himself a Catholic, said "I would rather stand with God against man, than with man against God." Virtually unknown even among the Portuguese until fairly recently, he was selected in 2007 as the third Greatest Portuguese of all time. Three of his 14 children, Carlos (1922-1999), Sebastian (1923-2006), and John Paul Abranches (1932-2009) lived and died in the U.S.JosÃ© Alain Fralon, a journalist for Le Monde in Paris, describes Dr. Sousa Mendes' life especially from the 1930's in Belgium and France to his death in Lisbon in 1954. An excellent and quick read that encourages further reading on this war hero.

My father was a beneficiary of one of the visas granted by this great man in June of 1940, allowing him and his family to travel across Spain to Portugal and eventually, to safety in the United States.I bought this book for him for his 78th birthday, and he told me it was an enjoyable read.

A little known book, but a very interesting addition to WW2.

Sad story of an unlikable aristocrat who saved thousands from the Nazis but died in poverty as a result. Too bad this reads like a plea from his relatives for his back pay owed by the government.

As the previous reviewer from Portugal noted, humanity sometimes fails to acknowledge people who do the right thing. Sousa Mendes was just such a man. He was a Portuguese Council in southern France at the time of the German invasion. Jews from the low countries and France fled south trying to get to the neutral countries of Spain and Portugal. These countries sealed their borders in most cases, so one had to have a visa to get across the border. Sousa Mendes violated his country's rule aginst these stateless persons, and literally issued thousands of visas so that these Jews and other opponents of the Nazis could escape. In the process, he destroyed his career and eventually died in poverty. He did do the proper thing where most others abided their country's rules.This was an inspirational read. Fralon details the life of Sousa Mendes and Portugal's role in both World Wars. He also details a little of the fascist rule of Salzaar. Unfortunately there were no happy endings with Sousa Mendes. The Portuguese government even balked at honoring him, and was forced by outside pressure to recognize what he did in the nineties.

Aristides de Sousa Mendes saved ten thousand during the holocaust and paid a high cost for his ethical actions. This acounting should be more widely known--as should this hero's name. The individual stories make it even more compelling.

This is a naive and biased book trying to glorify the "myth" of Sousa Mendes that allegedly saved 30 thousand lives in 1940. A recent study by the Yad Vashem historian Avraham Milgra published by the Shoah Resource Center, International School for Holocaust Studies, says that the 30,000 figure are highly exaggerated. What is puzzling about the book is the candidness in which it also reveals that Sousa Mendes career is a thirty year track record of indiscipline, abuse of public money, accusations of extortions, and reprimands. Sousa Mendes was never ill-treated. He kept on being paid his full Consul salary until he died in 1954. The only thing that Sousa Mendes did was, in the middle a panic crisis when eight to ten million French took to the roads and railways to escape the German armies, Sousa Mendes, caught in the middle of the uncontrolled panic, had a nervous breakdown and granted a few hundred visas without asking questions. He never put his life at risk he just jeopardized portuguese neutrality in the war and put at risk the lives of millions. In my view the myth was created by those trying to make money while surfing the wave of commotion rose by the holocaust and also by Portuguese politicians that want to use the story to attack Salazar. But if you want to learn many hiden facts about Sousa Mendes and the myth, then this is a good book.

In the 20 months I've had this book, it has been one of the most frequently off the shelf and in use, and I have quite a few design reference books. I bring it over to my chair to thumb through while letting my mind rove through knotty problems; I use it as a springboard for new designs; I relax with the many pages of patterns. Just yesterday, I pulled it off the shelf again ... having only put it back a few days ago ... when I was looking for inspiration for a diaper using a hexagonal grid. I found several, and got to work.I noticed the previous reviewer down-graded this book for not being in color, but I supply my own colors in my mind when I view the patterns, so that doesn't bother me. In fact, I rather like the black and white, since it gives me a skeleton which I can then fill out or extrapolate from, or not, as I desire.I am in awe of the talent of these 19th century authors, who did not have a smart phone to digitally capture everything they saw, but they put it all down on paper with their own hands and drawing materials. Because they had to deeply see it, and understand it, to get it down right, their drawings are often more useful than a modern snapshot might be.

This books both illustrates and explains various motifs. Very helpful to know the history behind the motif. This simplifies creating new variations of the motif.

Heaps and heaps of patterns, just a little disappointed that they are all in black and white. As it is a book about pattern, and colour plays a HUGE part of this I expected to see some in colour....

This is a decent quality book with quite a lot of different patterns in it. I like the different line widths and styles and the patterns are big enough to actually use without having to expand them and lose the quality of the image. This is an easy book to grab when you need a design idea if you are working with patterns, Pretty impressive for the low price.

Recently took a family vacation to southern Utah and relied solely on this guidebook to plan our week-long trip. It is very well written and provided the right amount of detail we needed to have a better-than-expected trip while not bogging us down in the tedium that is so common to big name guidebooks.You can expect good a well-organized book, 1st-hand accounts of the most important restaurants, lodging and services near all the parks. You'll also find very good recommendations for day hikes and other activities in the park. The narrative is no-nonsense, giving you all the info you need to get in and out of each park. Great maps, good photos.Giving the book 5 stars because it caused us to visit a park we weren't really excited about - Grand Staircase Escalante - and ended up having the best hike of our entire trip. What more could you ask for?

Ok, I bought this guide not specifically knowing where we would go and whether we would need it and ended up to be the MOST PRECIOUS resource of our Utah trip and beyond this summer 17. I highly recommend it. I was surprised just how detailed and accurate. Every corner shop, every organic coffee bar.. they are all in there and actually open (versus already closed or moved on). Totally made a difference to our holiday and will buy this brand from now on

Helped make our family trip to Zion, Bryce and Arches a winner. Used Moon along with The Family Guide To The Grand Circle National Parks (1st Ed.), and Benchmark's Utah Road & Recreation Atlas (6th Ed.). We needed the Moon guide because The Family Guide 1st ed. did not have enough maps or info re activities, sites, meals and shopping which was necessary for toddlers. (Supposedly, the 2d ed. now does have more but we were on a schedule). The Moon guide also had small but detailed maps and hiking charts. It also had info / hints re other side trips. We recommend.

Just got back from the Zion and Bryce and purchased these before leaving. I love the layout and divisions of the book and wish I had ordered sooner (before booking hotels). The maps/diagrams/charts are in color and easy to understand... the hiking trails were well described (easy, mod, strenuous... mileage...duration, etc) and helped us get an idea of how we wanted to spend our time there. The most helpful topics for me included: Definitions/education on hoodoos/sandstone etc, hiking, what to see in one day, avoiding crowds, and history. Funny story... I read portions of the book aloud to my husband who was driving on the way there... read p. 312 about â€œMountain Lion Encountersâ€ and that night he had a nightmare about being attacked by a mtn lion... Letâ€™s just say the book was informative for what to do in an attack! I also purchased â€œGrand Canyonâ€ and â€œYellowstone & Grand Tetonâ€ from the same publisher (Moon)... I had read reviews that they were the best guide books and I was not disappointed... Would purchase more from this publisher as I feel the topics were extremely well covered! (As a side note... Zion was the BEST park of all we visited and we wish we had stayed longer there)

We went to the Moab area for 6 days. Then I went out alone wilderness car camping in the Escalante Grand Staircase area just this last week. I used this book each time and I have to say that this guy really knows his stuff. He was spot on with every recommendation. I revisit Zion and Bryce parks (spectacular) from time to time and I can't wait to use this book for that. Guidebooks make a big difference to a journey and I truly appreciate someone who has taken the time and effort to do it well. Thank you W.C. McRae and Judy Jewell.

Spot on, most of the time. A couple of times the author got places mixed up, but the recommendations were pretty good, except restaurants are just plain terrible in the Bryce area (and most of rural Utah), no matter what you pay, so be prepared for disappointment (but only in this category). Good recommendations for hiking both in and outside of Zion/Bryce.

Go to the restaurants/sights/places that the author includes in the book. The author methodically includes and details the places/sights/hangouts that will enhance your trip and has nuanced tips that dramatically increase your enjoyment. And the author tastefully leaves out some places that are not the best use of your time.We used this at Moab and got a local's recommendation and then looked it up in the book and they were exactly aligned. Colorized pages made it easy to find the places to visit based on your time alloted. Interesting stories and history for many of the spots add another dimension. Top notch. Highest recommendation. It made our trip!

Wish I had gotten it before making reservations. It included everything we could want to know & IT WAS OUR GUIDE THE WHLD TRIP.

Kicking off from the Greeksâ€™ nebulous but intriguing ideas on heredity, the book settles on the genetics pioneer Gregor Mendel. Mendel was an abbot in a little known town in Central Europe whose pioneering experiments on pea plants provided the first window into the gene and evolution. He discovered that discrete traits could be transmitted in statistically predictable ways from one generation to next. Darwin came tantalizingly close to discovering Mendelâ€™s ideas (the two were contemporaries), but inheritance was one of the few things he got wrong. Instead, a triumvirate of scientists rediscovered Mendelâ€™s work almost thirty years after his death and spread the word far and wide. Mendelâ€™s work shows us that genius can emerge from the most unlikely quarters; one wonders how rapidly his work might have been disseminated had the Internet been around.The baton of the gene was next picked up by Francis Galton, Darwinâ€™s cousin. Galton was the father of eugenics. Eugenics has now acquired a bad reputation, but Galton was a polymath who made important contributions to science by introducing statistics and measurements in the study of genetic differences. Many of the early eugenicists subscribed to the racial theories that were common in those days; many of them were well intended if patronizing, seeking to â€˜improve the weakâ€™, but they did not see the ominous slippery slope which they were on. Sadly their ideas fed into the unfortunate history of eugenics in America and Europe. Eugenics was enthusiastically supported in the United States; Mukherjee discusses the infamous Supreme Court case in which Oliver Wendell Holmes sanctioned the forced sterilization of an unfortunate woman named Carrie Buck by proclaiming, â€œThree generations of imbeciles are enoughâ€. Another misuse of genetics was by Trofim Lysenko who tried to use Lamarckâ€™s theories of acquired characteristics in doomed agricultural campaigns in Stalinist Russia; as an absurd example, he tried to â€œre educateâ€ wheat using â€œshock therapyâ€. The horrific racial depredations of the Nazis which the narrative documents in some detail of course â€œput the ultimate mark of shameâ€ on eugenics.The book then moves on to Thomas Hunt Morganâ€™s very important experiments on fruit flies. Morgan and his colleagues found a potent tool to study gene propagation in naturally occurring mutations. Mutations in specific genes (for instance ones causing changes in eye color) allowed them to track the flow of genetic material through several generations. Not only did they make the crucial discovery that genes lie on chromosomes, but they also discovered that genes could be inherited (and also segregated) in groups rather than by themselves. Mukherjee also has an eye for historical detail; for example, right at the time that Morgan was experimenting on flies, Russia was experimenting with a bloody revolution. This coincidence gives Mukherjee an opening to discuss hemophilia in the Russian royal family â€“ a genetically inherited disease. A parallel discussion talks about the fusion of Darwin's and Mendelâ€™s ideas by Ronald Fisher, Theodosius Dobzhansky and others into a modern theory of genetics supported by statistical reasoning in the 40s â€“ whatâ€™s called the Modern Synthesis.Morgan and othersâ€™ work paved the way to recognizing that the gene is not just some abstract, ether-like ghost which transmits itself into the next generation but a material entity. That material entity was called DNA. The scientists most important for recognizing this fact were Frederick Griffiths and Oswald Avery and Mukherjee tells their story well; however I would have appreciated a fuller account of Friedrich Miescher who discovered DNA in pus bandages from soldiers. Griffiths showed that DNA can be responsible for converting non-virulent bacteria to virulent ones; Avery showed that it is a distinct molecule separate from protein (a lot of people believed that proteins with their functional significance were the hereditary material).All these events set the stage for the golden age of molecular biology, the deciphering of the structure of DNA by James Watson (to whom the quote in the title is attributed), Francis Crick, Rosalind Franklin and others. Many of these pioneers were inspired by a little book by physicist Erwin Schrodinger which argued that the gene could be understood using precise principles of physics and chemistry; his arguments turned biology into a reductionist science. Mukherjeeâ€™s account of this seminal discovery is crisp and vivid. He documents Franklinâ€™s struggles and unfair treatment as well as Watson and Crickâ€™s do-what-it-takes attitude to use all possible information to crack the DNA puzzle. As a woman in a manâ€™s establishment Franklin was in turn patronized and sidelined, but unlike Watson and Crick she was averse to building models and applying the principles of chemistry to the problem, two traits that were key to the duoâ€™s success.The structure of DNA of course inaugurated one of the most sparkling periods in the history of intellectual thought since it immediately suggested an exact mechanism for copying the hereditary material as well as a link between DNA and proteins which are the workhorses of life. All these developments laid the foundation for our modern era of genetic engineering.The book devotes a great deal of space to this foundation and does so with verve and authority. It talks about early efforts to sequence the gene at Harvard and Cambridge and describes the founding of Genentech, the first company to exploit the new technology which pioneered many uses of genes for producing drugs and hormones: much of this important work was done with phages, viruses which infect bacteria. There is also an important foray into using genetics to understand embryology and human development, a topic with ponderous implications for our future. With the new technology also came new moral issues, as exemplified by the 1975 Asilomar conference which tried to hammer out agreements for the responsible use of genetic engineering. I am glad Mukherjee emphasizes these events, since their importance is only going to grow as genetic technology becomes more widespread and accessible.These early efforts exploded on to the stage when the Human Genome Project (HGP) was announced, and thatâ€™s where the first part of the book roughly ends. Beginning with the HGP, the second part mainly focuses on the medical history and implications of the gene. Mukherjeeâ€™s discussion of the HGP focuses mainly on the rivalries between the scientists and the competing efforts led by Francis Collins of the NIH and Craig Venter, the maverick scientist who broke off and started his own company. This discussion is somewhat brief but it culminates in the announcement of the map of the human genome at the White House in 2000. It is clear now that this â€œmapâ€ was no more than a listing of components; we still have to understand what the components mean. Part of that lake of ignorance was revealed by the discovery of so-called â€˜epigeneticâ€™ elements that modify not the basic sequence of DNA but the way itâ€™s expressed. Epigenetics is an as yet ill-understood mix of gene and environment which the book describes in some detail. Itâ€™s worth noting that Mukherjeeâ€™s discussion of epigenetics has faced some criticism lately, especially based on his article on the topic in the New Yorker.The book then talks about early successes in correlating genes with illness that came with the advent of the human genome and epigenome; genetics has been very useful in finding determinants and drugs for diseases like sickle cell anemia, childhood leukemia, breast cancer and cystic fibrosis. Mukherjee especially has an excellent account of Nancy Wexler, the discoverer of the gene causing Huntingtonâ€™s disease, whose search for its origins led her to families stricken with the malady in remote parts of Venezuela. While such diseases have clear genetic determinants, as Mukherjee expounds upon at length, genetic causes for diseases like cancer, diabetes and especially the mental illness which plagues members of the authorâ€™s family are woefully ill-understood, largely because they are multifactorial and suffer from weakly correlated markers. We have a long way to go before the majority of human diseases can be treated using gene-based treatment. In its latter half the book also describes attempts to link genes to homosexuality, race, IQ, temperament and gender identity. The basic verdict is that while there is undoubtedly a genetic component to all these factors, the complex interplay between genes and environment means that itâ€™s very difficult currently to tease apart influences from the two. More research is clearly needed.The last part of the book focuses on some cutting edge research on genetics thatâ€™s uncovering both potent tools for precise gene engineering as well as deep insights into human evolution. A notable section of the book is devoted to the recent discovery that Neanderthals and humans most likely interbred. Transgenic organisms, stem cells and gene therapy also get a healthy review, and the author talks about successes and failures in these areas (an account of a gene therapy trial gone wrong is poignant and rattling) as well as ethical and political questions which they raise. Finally, a new technology called CRISPR which has taken the world of science by storm gets an honorary mention: by promising to edit and propagate genes with unprecedented precision - even in the germ line - CRISPR has resurrected all the angels and demons from the history of genetics. What we decide about technologies like CRISPR today will impact what our children do tomorrow. The clock is ticking.In a project as ambitious as this there are bound to be a few gaps. Some of the gaps left me a bit befuddled though. There are a few minor scientific infelicities: for instance Linus Paulingâ€™s structure of DNA was not really flawed because of a lack of magnesium ions but mainly because it sported a form of the phosphate groups that wouldnâ€™t exist at the marginally alkaline pH of the human body. The bookâ€™s treatment of the genetic code leaves out some key exciting moments, such as when a scientific bombshell from biochemist Marshall Nirenberg disrupted a major meeting in the former Soviet Union. I also kept wondering how any discussion of DNAâ€™s history could omit the famous Meselson-Stahl experiment; this experiment which very elegantly illuminated the central feature of DNA replication has been called â€œthe most beautiful experiment in biologyâ€. Similarly I could see no mention of Barbara McClintock whose experiments on â€˜jumping genesâ€™ were critical in understanding how genes can be turned on and off. I was also surprised to find few details on a technique called PCR without which modern genetic research would be virtually impossible: both PCR and its inventor Kary Mullis have a colorful history that would have been worth including. Similarly, details of cutting-edge sequencing techniques which have outpaced Mooreâ€™s Law are also largely omitted. I understand that a 600 page history cannot include every single scientific detail, but some of these omissions seem to me to be too important to be left out.More broadly, there is no discussion of the pros and cons of using DNA to convict criminals: that would have made for a compelling human interest story. Nor is there much exploration of using gene sequences to illuminate the â€˜tree of lifeâ€™ which Darwin tantalizingly pulled the veil back on: in general I would have appreciated a bigger discussion of how DNA connects us to all living creatures. There are likewise no accounts of some of the fascinating applications of DNA in archaeological investigations. Finally, and this is not his fault, the author suffers from the natural disadvantage of not being able to interview many of the pioneers of molecular biology since they arenâ€™t around any more (fortunately, Horace Freeland Judsonâ€™s superb â€œThe Eighth Day of Creationâ€ fills this gap: Judson got to interview almost every one of them for his book). This makes his account of science sound a bit more linear than the messy, human process that it is.The volume ends by contemplating some philosophical questions: What are the moral and societal implications of being able to engineer genomes even in the fetal stage? How do we control the evils to which genetic technology can be put? What is natural and what isnâ€™t in the age of the artificial gene? How do we balance the relentless, almost inevitable pace of science with the human quest for responsible conduct, dignity and equality? Mukherjee leaves us with a picture of these questions as well as one of his family and their shared burden of mental illness: a mirage searching for realization, a sea of questions looking for a tiny boat filled with answers.Overall I found â€œThe Gene: An Intimate Historyâ€ to be beautifully written with a literary flair, and in spite of the omissions, the parts of genetic history and medicine which it does discuss are important and instructive. Its human stories are poignant, its lessons for the future pregnant with pitfalls and possibilities. Its sweeping profile of lifeâ€™s innermost secrets could not help but remind me of a Japanese proverb quoted by physicist Richard Feynman: â€œTo every man is given the key to the gates of heaven. The same key opens the gates of hell.â€ The gene is the ultimate key of this kind, and Mukherjeeâ€™s book explores its fine contours in all their glory and tragedy. We have a choice in deciding which of these contours we want to follow.

The optimists out there expect congenitally blind people to see and cancers all cured. Some expect us to be able to grow a third arm if we so choose or re-create a dinosaur in a century or so. Genetics is combined with nanotechnology, cryonics, robotics etc by many fantasizers to come up with even more fanciful theories. The author could have added a chapter or two to discuss gene therapy and other recent experiments to complete the excellent work further.That said, a remarkable book in all aspects.

I am currently reading two books on 2012, this one by Jenkins, and "The Order of Days..." by David Stuart. These two authors are diametrically opposed in their approach to the subject (to the extent of being somewhat hostile towards each other). Stuart is a well known member of Maya academia and Jenkins of what is euphemistically referred to as "independent thinking". However, to their credit, they both reach the same fundamental conclusion. To quote Jenkins (copied from his web site):"There is ZERO evidence that the ancient Maya predicted the end of the world in 2012. The Maya calendar does not END in 2012. DOOMSDAY-2012 is a fallacious construct, a projection of exploitative and underinformed writers and Western nihilistic fantasy."I think that Stuart would agree wholeheartedly with this statement.Another similarity (though they both might cringe at my suggesting they have common ground) is that both books contain a wealth of detailed information about Mayan history, culture, calendar, and their concept of time (which is quite different that the typical Western view).The popular belief that the Mayans predicted the end of the world is 2012 is just as without basis in fact as is the commonly held belief that Mayan civilization suddenly and catastrophically disappeared. Here in Guatemala there are literally millions of Mayans who still maintain vestiges of their ancient culture including their calendar (No toto, the "mother ship" did not take them all "home").While I personally would categorize so-called "new age" thinking as "nihilistic fantasy"; Jenkins is not as deluded as most who subscribe this mode of thought -- he is at least clearly still in touch with factual reality. Even if you set aside the "new age" material in his book, it is still loaded with lots of information and some potentially unique insights.If lots of academic detail is not your thing, then neither book will be to your liking, but both contain a wealth of information about this fascinating subject and, still living, culture.UPDATE:I still think Mr. Jenkin's book is worth reading for those seriously interested in the subject. I think Jenkins has some very interesting hypothesises (sp?). However, he allows his zeal for these new age perspectives to cause him to present them as fact -- which of course they are not. If you can set that aside for a moment, his ideas regarding mapping of Mayan mythology to Astronomy are quite interesting and plausible -- though not proven.

This book is filled with data, analysis, specifics. The Mayan astronomy and mathematics are incredible and this work highlights how their astronomy and mathematics functioned. The book also dabbles in the metaphysical and religious arenas. But with the depth of research, documentation and explanation about the real Mayan astronomy and math, I could tolerate the small dose of evangelizing. Other reviewers have mistated the 2012 conclusions in this book. The authors make it clear that 2012 would bring rebirth of earth, heavens and humans. They downplay the cataclysmic 2012 scenarios and offer optimism about the Mayan rebirth prediction.

Overall this book is pretty solid I think as far as the research.The main point is that we are very close to the end of what people call "The Platonic Year". This is a 25,800 year period of time during which our solar system travels through the 12 signs of the zodiac.On 12/21/12 a strange astronomical alignment will occur where our solar system will get lined up with the super massive black hole in the center of the Milky Way galaxy. The "black sun". I think I read somewhere else that an energy beam is emanating from the black sun and this beam will strike the earth on that date.The author doesn't really say exactly what's supposed to happen on that date. Perhaps the change that occurs will be within all of us I don't know.Another re-occuring point is the Mayan shamans' use of mind altering substances such as certain mushrooms. To avoid the upset stomach that these concoctions could cause they would sometimes inject the mixture directly into their intestines.In appendix 6 he critiques some other books on this subject and compares them to his own research. He disagrees with others that the ancient Egyptians were more advanced that the Mayans. My own take is both cultures have a common source (Atlantis). The pyramid of Kukulcan compares very well to the other pyramids around the world. However the pyramids at Giza, especially when they were in their original condition, stand alone.Nobody really knows how these pyramids were built by the way, much as traditional Egyptologists like to make us think they know.He is correct that people in our modern world today may in some cases tend to underestimate the knowledge that these ancient cultures possessed.Many people today have a feeling that something strange is going to happen soon. I do anyway. Perhaps a lot of people like to read those 'left behind' books because that's a Christian response to this feeling.There are some truly tragic desecrations and destructions of culture and knowledge that stand out in human history. Here's my short list:1) the Muslims destroying the surfaces of the pyramids at Giza in Egypt so they could use the limestone for their palaces for Mohammed2) the burning of the library at Alexandria by the Christians3) the Spanish burning all of the Mayan's ancient codex booklets and melting down all of the Aztec's priceless gold artifactsSo we see that no single religion or country had any monopoly on destroying knowledge and history.
