Genetics is humanity and life writ large, and this book on the gene by physician and writer Siddhartha Mukherjee paints on a canvas as large as life itself. It deals with both the history of genetics and its applications in health and disease. It shows us that studying the gene not only holds the potential to transform the treatment of human disease and to feed the world’s burgeoning population, but promises to provide a window into life’s deepest secrets and into our very identity as human beings. The volume benefits from Mukherjee’s elegant literary style, novelist’s eye for character sketches and expansive feel for human history. While there is ample explanation of the science, the focus is really on the brilliant human beings who made it all possible. The author’s own troubling family history of mental illness serves as a backdrop and keeps on rearing its head like a looming, unresolved question. The story begins with a trip to an asylum to see his troubled cousin; two of his uncles have also suffered from various "unravelings of the mind". This burden of personal inheritance sets the stage for many of the questions about nature, nurture and destiny asked in the pages that follow. The book can roughly be divided into two parts. The first part is a sweeping and vivid history of genetics. The second half is a meditation on what studying the gene means for human biology and medicine. The account is more or less chronological and this approach naturally serves the historical portion well. Mukherjee does a commendable job shedding light on the signal historical achievements of the men and women who deciphered the secret of life. Kicking off from the Greeks’ nebulous but intriguing ideas on heredity, the book settles on the genetics pioneer Gregor Mendel. Mendel was an abbot in a little known town in Central Europe whose pioneering experiments on pea plants provided the first window into the gene and evolution. He discovered that discrete traits could be transmitted in statistically predictable ways from one generation to next. Darwin came tantalizingly close to discovering Mendel’s ideas (the two were contemporaries), but inheritance was one of the few things he got wrong. Instead, a triumvirate of scientists rediscovered Mendel’s work almost thirty years after his death and spread the word far and wide. Mendel’s work shows us that genius can emerge from the most unlikely quarters; one wonders how rapidly his work might have been disseminated had the Internet been around. The baton of the gene was next picked up by Francis Galton, Darwin’s cousin. Galton was the father of eugenics. Eugenics has now acquired a bad reputation, but Galton was a polymath who made important contributions to science by introducing statistics and measurements in the study of genetic differences. Many of the early eugenicists subscribed to the racial theories that were common in those days; many of them were well intended if patronizing, seeking to ‘improve the weak’, but they did not see the ominous slippery slope which they were on. Sadly their ideas fed into the unfortunate history of eugenics in America and Europe. Eugenics was enthusiastically supported in the United States; Mukherjee discusses the infamous Supreme Court case in which Oliver Wendell Holmes sanctioned the forced sterilization of an unfortunate woman named Carrie Buck by proclaiming, “Three generations of imbeciles are enough”. Another misuse of genetics was by Trofim Lysenko who tried to use Lamarck’s theories of acquired characteristics in doomed agricultural campaigns in Stalinist Russia; as an absurd example, he tried to “re educate” wheat using “shock therapy”. The horrific racial depredations of the Nazis which the narrative documents in some detail of course “put the ultimate mark of shame” on eugenics. The book then moves on to Thomas Hunt Morgan’s very important experiments on fruit flies. Morgan and his colleagues found a potent tool to study gene propagation in naturally occurring mutations. Mutations in specific genes (for instance ones causing changes in eye color) allowed them to track the flow of genetic material through several generations. Not only did they make the crucial discovery that genes lie on chromosomes, but they also discovered that genes could be inherited (and also segregated) in groups rather than by themselves. Mukherjee also has an eye for historical detail; for example, right at the time that Morgan was experimenting on flies, Russia was experimenting with a bloody revolution. This coincidence gives Mukherjee an opening to discuss hemophilia in the Russian royal family – a genetically inherited disease. A parallel discussion talks about the fusion of Darwin's and Mendel’s ideas by Ronald Fisher, Theodosius Dobzhansky and others into a modern theory of genetics supported by statistical reasoning in the 40s – what’s called the Modern Synthesis.Morgan and others’ work paved the way to recognizing that the gene is not just some abstract, ether-like ghost which transmits itself into the next generation but a material entity. That material entity was called DNA. The scientists most important for recognizing this fact were Frederick Griffiths and Oswald Avery and Mukherjee tells their story well; however I would have appreciated a fuller account of Friedrich Miescher who discovered DNA in pus bandages from soldiers. Griffiths showed that DNA can be responsible for converting non-virulent bacteria to virulent ones; Avery showed that it is a distinct molecule separate from protein (a lot of people believed that proteins with their functional significance were the hereditary material). All these events set the stage for the golden age of molecular biology, the deciphering of the structure of DNA by James Watson (to whom the quote in the title is attributed), Francis Crick, Rosalind Franklin and others. Many of these pioneers were inspired by a little book by physicist Erwin Schrodinger which argued that the gene could be understood using precise principles of physics and chemistry; his arguments turned biology into a reductionist science. Mukherjee’s account of this seminal discovery is crisp and vivid. He documents Franklin’s struggles and unfair treatment as well as Watson and Crick’s do-what-it-takes attitude to use all possible information to crack the DNA puzzle. As a woman in a man’s establishment Franklin was in turn patronized and sidelined, but unlike Watson and Crick she was averse to building models and applying the principles of chemistry to the problem, two traits that were key to the duo’s success. The structure of DNA of course inaugurated one of the most sparkling periods in the history of intellectual thought since it immediately suggested an exact mechanism for copying the hereditary material as well as a link between DNA and proteins which are the workhorses of life. The major thread following from DNA to protein was the cracking of the genetic code which specifies a correspondence between nucleotides on a gene and the amino acids of a protein: the guiding philosophers in this effort were Francis Crick and Sydney Brenner. A parallel thread follows the crucial work of the French biologists Francois Jacob and Jacques Monod - both of whom had fought in the French resistance during World War 2 - in establishing the mechanism of gene regulation. All these developments laid the foundation for our modern era of genetic engineering. The book devotes a great deal of space to this foundation and does so with verve and authority. It talks about early efforts to sequence the gene at Harvard and Cambridge and describes the founding of Genentech, the first company to exploit the new technology which pioneered many uses of genes for producing drugs and hormones: much of this important work was done with phages, viruses which infect bacteria. There is also an important foray into using genetics to understand embryology and human development, a topic with ponderous implications for our future. With the new technology also came new moral issues, as exemplified by the 1975 Asilomar conference which tried to hammer out agreements for the responsible use of genetic engineering. I am glad Mukherjee emphasizes these events, since their importance is only going to grow as genetic technology becomes more widespread and accessible. These early efforts exploded on to the stage when the Human Genome Project (HGP) was announced, and that’s where the first part of the book roughly ends. Beginning with the HGP, the second part mainly focuses on the medical history and implications of the gene. Mukherjee’s discussion of the HGP focuses mainly on the rivalries between the scientists and the competing efforts led by Francis Collins of the NIH and Craig Venter, the maverick scientist who broke off and started his own company. This discussion is somewhat brief but it culminates in the announcement of the map of the human genome at the White House in 2000. It is clear now that this “map” was no more than a listing of components; we still have to understand what the components mean. Part of that lake of ignorance was revealed by the discovery of so-called ‘epigenetic’ elements that modify not the basic sequence of DNA but the way it’s expressed. Epigenetics is an as yet ill-understood mix of gene and environment which the book describes in some detail. It’s worth noting that Mukherjee’s discussion of epigenetics has faced some criticism lately, especially based on his article on the topic in the New Yorker. The book then talks about early successes in correlating genes with illness that came with the advent of the human genome and epigenome; genetics has been very useful in finding determinants and drugs for diseases like sickle cell anemia, childhood leukemia, breast cancer and cystic fibrosis. Mukherjee especially has an excellent account of Nancy Wexler, the discoverer of the gene causing Huntington’s disease, whose search for its origins led her to families stricken with the malady in remote parts of Venezuela. While such diseases have clear genetic determinants, as Mukherjee expounds upon at length, genetic causes for diseases like cancer, diabetes and especially the mental illness which plagues members of the author’s family are woefully ill-understood, largely because they are multifactorial and suffer from weakly correlated markers. We have a long way to go before the majority of human diseases can be treated using gene-based treatment. In its latter half the book also describes attempts to link genes to homosexuality, race, IQ, temperament and gender identity. The basic verdict is that while there is undoubtedly a genetic component to all these factors, the complex interplay between genes and environment means that it’s very difficult currently to tease apart influences from the two. More research is clearly needed. The last part of the book focuses on some cutting edge research on genetics that’s uncovering both potent tools for precise gene engineering as well as deep insights into human evolution. A notable section of the book is devoted to the recent discovery that Neanderthals and humans most likely interbred. Transgenic organisms, stem cells and gene therapy also get a healthy review, and the author talks about successes and failures in these areas (an account of a gene therapy trial gone wrong is poignant and rattling) as well as ethical and political questions which they raise. Finally, a new technology called CRISPR which has taken the world of science by storm gets an honorary mention: by promising to edit and propagate genes with unprecedented precision - even in the germ line - CRISPR has resurrected all the angels and demons from the history of genetics. What we decide about technologies like CRISPR today will impact what our children do tomorrow. The clock is ticking. In a project as ambitious as this there are bound to be a few gaps. Some of the gaps left me a bit befuddled though. There are a few minor scientific infelicities: for instance Linus Pauling’s structure of DNA was not really flawed because of a lack of magnesium ions but mainly because it sported a form of the phosphate groups that wouldn’t exist at the marginally alkaline pH of the human body. The book’s treatment of the genetic code leaves out some key exciting moments, such as when a scientific bombshell from biochemist Marshall Nirenberg disrupted a major meeting in the former Soviet Union. I also kept wondering how any discussion of DNA’s history could omit the famous Meselson-Stahl experiment; this experiment which very elegantly illuminated the central feature of DNA replication has been called “the most beautiful experiment in biology”. Similarly I could see no mention of Barbara McClintock whose experiments on ‘jumping genes’ were critical in understanding how genes can be turned on and off. I was also surprised to find few details on a technique called PCR without which modern genetic research would be virtually impossible: both PCR and its inventor Kary Mullis have a colorful history that would have been worth including. Similarly, details of cutting-edge sequencing techniques which have outpaced Moore’s Law are also largely omitted. I understand that a 600 page history cannot include every single scientific detail, but some of these omissions seem to me to be too important to be left out.More broadly, there is no discussion of the pros and cons of using DNA to convict criminals: that would have made for a compelling human interest story. Nor is there much exploration of using gene sequences to illuminate the ‘tree of life’ which Darwin tantalizingly pulled the veil back on: in general I would have appreciated a bigger discussion of how DNA connects us to all living creatures. There are likewise no accounts of some of the fascinating applications of DNA in archaeological investigations. Finally, and this is not his fault, the author suffers from the natural disadvantage of not being able to interview many of the pioneers of molecular biology since they aren’t around any more (fortunately, Horace Freeland Judson’s superb “The Eighth Day of Creation” fills this gap: Judson got to interview almost every one of them for his book). This makes his account of science sound a bit more linear than the messy, human process that it is.The volume ends by contemplating some philosophical questions: What are the moral and societal implications of being able to engineer genomes even in the fetal stage? How do we control the evils to which genetic technology can be put? What is natural and what isn’t in the age of the artificial gene? How do we balance the relentless, almost inevitable pace of science with the human quest for responsible conduct, dignity and equality? Mukherjee leaves us with a picture of these questions as well as one of his family and their shared burden of mental illness: a mirage searching for realization, a sea of questions looking for a tiny boat filled with answers.Overall I found “The Gene: An Intimate History” to be beautifully written with a literary flair, and in spite of the omissions, the parts of genetic history and medicine which it does discuss are important and instructive. Its human stories are poignant, its lessons for the future pregnant with pitfalls and possibilities. Its sweeping profile of life’s innermost secrets could not help but remind me of a Japanese proverb quoted by physicist Richard Feynman: “To every man is given the key to the gates of heaven. The same key opens the gates of hell.” The gene is the ultimate key of this kind, and Mukherjee’s book explores its fine contours in all their glory and tragedy. We have a choice in deciding which of these contours we want to follow.

Gene is a must-read history book on genetics. Many accounts have been penned on Relativity and Quantum Mechanics, for instance, to make their importance known to the non-professionals. Gene fills the void for the equally important science of Genetics. The author's biggest success is in weaving a beautiful narrative. Starting with the emotionally-charged personal links to the field to the frequent detailing of personalities of or anecdotes involving famous scientists, the subject is kept 'human'. There are abundant scientific notions to satisfy any reader picking up the book to understand the real subject matter, but not in the general bland fashion of studies-and-conclusions that tend to lose many a lay people. The book also excels because of the simplicity with which countless exotic concepts are explained. From the notions of introns and exons to the polygenic nature of most phenotypes, the feedback from environment to gene mutation and the massive role played by non-gene factors in most our traits, the author uncovers a staggering number of interesting findings in a highly understandable manner.Amid all this, the author keeps the focus on various moral and ethical issues. The narrative is laced with historic episodes of all kinds to emphasise the criticality of the questions confronting us as we make more scientific progress. For example, the book beautifully explains the dangers of genetic modification - which tantamounts to replacing natural selection with human selection. As professionals or parents seek to weed out certain deformities, there are genuine risks of us eliminating some important evolutionary traits mainly out of ignorance of how genes really work at this stage but also out of their possible other utilities in long future. The biggest flaw of the book is insufficient focus on latest developments and near absence of what this science is capable of solving in coming decades. The optimists out there expect congenitally blind people to see and cancers all cured. Some expect us to be able to grow a third arm if we so choose or re-create a dinosaur in a century or so. Genetics is combined with nanotechnology, cryonics, robotics etc by many fantasizers to come up with even more fanciful theories. The author could have added a chapter or two to discuss gene therapy and other recent experiments to complete the excellent work further. That said, a remarkable book in all aspects.

From Library Journal

These two works press beyond the boundaries of conventional scholarship to explore the alternative world view offered by Maya culture. Brennan, an artist and longtime student of prehistoric rock inspirations throughout North America and Mexico, examines the hand signs shown in Maya glyphs and art work in search of an interpretation of the Maya system of writing, which has long interested interested and puzzled scholars He contends that the Maya used a sophisticated gesture language similar to that of the Plains Indian groups of North America. Many useful illustrations and compelling examples support Brennan's theory. While the conclusions drawn are equal parts scholarship and hypothesis, this thorough and detailed study of the relationships among writing, art, symbolism, and meaning fascinates. The Maya Long Count calendar, a complex system for measuring time, was developed around 2000 years ago, possibly at the pre-Maya site of Izapa in southern Mexico. Jenkins, an independent researcher, presents a wealth of information about Maya astronomy, mythology, and caledrics in support of his analysis of the Long Count calendar end-date, scheduled to occur on December 21, 2012. Providing evidence that the end-date corresponds with a rare alignment of our solar system, Jenkins contends that the Maya were aware of this celestial event and believed that it portended a dramatic rebirth for humanity. Good illustrations, maps, and an extensive bibliography complement this detailed work. Ultimately, however, Jenkins' well-researched and interesting interpretation remains speculative. Review

"The extensive research by John Major Jenkins into the Mayan astronomy and mysteries is very impressive indeed, and his book will no doubt become a classic in this field of study. Maya Cosmogenesis 2012 is a must-read for all those who feel that there is far more to our ancient past than meets the eye." (Robert G. Bauval, coauthor of The Orion Mystery)"Jenkins presents a wealth of information about the Maya astronomy, mythology, and calendrics in support of his analysis of the Long Count Calendar end-date . . . illustrations, maps, and extensive bibliography complement this detailed work." (Library Journal)"The steady pace of Jenkin's unveiling of his remarkable conclusions is a testament to his skill as a writer and his confidence in the way he has pieced together existing ethnohistoric data, archeoastronomy, his own fieldwork and an admirable empathy for the people who first articulated this monumental story, this key to understanding the nature of our place as humans in the galactic patterns of existence." (Curtis McCosco, CirclesofLight.com, May 2009)“Readers will be impressed by Jenkins' scholarly yet interdisciplinary approach. He reaches beyond the confines of the ivory towers to break old paradigms and create several new ones. Primarily, he gives us insights into the nature of time and reality, how the larger cosmic cycles correlate to World Ages, which in turn shows us how to the world periodically renews itself.” (Chris Lorenz, Dell Horoscope, December 2010)

I am currently reading two books on 2012, this one by Jenkins, and "The Order of Days..." by David Stuart. These two authors are diametrically opposed in their approach to the subject (to the extent of being somewhat hostile towards each other). Stuart is a well known member of Maya academia and Jenkins of what is euphemistically referred to as "independent thinking". However, to their credit, they both reach the same fundamental conclusion. To quote Jenkins (copied from his web site):"There is ZERO evidence that the ancient Maya predicted the end of the world in 2012. The Maya calendar does not END in 2012. DOOMSDAY-2012 is a fallacious construct, a projection of exploitative and underinformed writers and Western nihilistic fantasy."I think that Stuart would agree wholeheartedly with this statement.Another similarity (though they both might cringe at my suggesting they have common ground) is that both books contain a wealth of detailed information about Mayan history, culture, calendar, and their concept of time (which is quite different that the typical Western view). The popular belief that the Mayans predicted the end of the world is 2012 is just as without basis in fact as is the commonly held belief that Mayan civilization suddenly and catastrophically disappeared. Here in Guatemala there are literally millions of Mayans who still maintain vestiges of their ancient culture including their calendar (No toto, the "mother ship" did not take them all "home").While I personally would categorize so-called "new age" thinking as "nihilistic fantasy"; Jenkins is not as deluded as most who subscribe this mode of thought -- he is at least clearly still in touch with factual reality. Even if you set aside the "new age" material in his book, it is still loaded with lots of information and some potentially unique insights. If lots of academic detail is not your thing, then neither book will be to your liking, but both contain a wealth of information about this fascinating subject and, still living, culture.UPDATE:I still think Mr. Jenkin's book is worth reading for those seriously interested in the subject. I think Jenkins has some very interesting hypothesises (sp?). However, he allows his zeal for these new age perspectives to cause him to present them as fact -- which of course they are not. If you can set that aside for a moment, his ideas regarding mapping of Mayan mythology to Astronomy are quite interesting and plausible -- though not proven.

This book is filled with data, analysis, specifics. The Mayan astronomy and mathematics are incredible and this work highlights how their astronomy and mathematics functioned. The book also dabbles in the metaphysical and religious arenas. But with the depth of research, documentation and explanation about the real Mayan astronomy and math, I could tolerate the small dose of evangelizing. Other reviewers have mistated the 2012 conclusions in this book. The authors make it clear that 2012 would bring rebirth of earth, heavens and humans. They downplay the cataclysmic 2012 scenarios and offer optimism about the Mayan rebirth prediction.

Was great while he was reporting facts, but kinda went off the cliff when he tried to interpret it.

Very interesting.

Excellent seller, exactly what I wanted. Fast shipping. thank you.

As presented with timely delivery.

Overall this book is pretty solid I think as far as the research. The main point is that we are very close to the end of what people call "The Platonic Year". This is a 25,800 year period of time during which our solar system travels through the 12 signs of the zodiac. On 12/21/12 a strange astronomical alignment will occur where our solar system will get lined up with the super massive black hole in the center of the Milky Way galaxy. The "black sun". I think I read somewhere else that an energy beam is emanating from the black sun and this beam will strike the earth on that date. The author doesn't really say exactly what's supposed to happen on that date. Perhaps the change that occurs will be within all of us I don't know.Another re-occuring point is the Mayan shamans' use of mind altering substances such as certain mushrooms. To avoid the upset stomach that these concoctions could cause they would sometimes inject the mixture directly into their intestines. In appendix 6 he critiques some other books on this subject and compares them to his own research. He disagrees with others that the ancient Egyptians were more advanced that the Mayans. My own take is both cultures have a common source (Atlantis). The pyramid of Kukulcan compares very well to the other pyramids around the world. However the pyramids at Giza, especially when they were in their original condition, stand alone.Nobody really knows how these pyramids were built by the way, much as traditional Egyptologists like to make us think they know.He is correct that people in our modern world today may in some cases tend to underestimate the knowledge that these ancient cultures possessed. Many people today have a feeling that something strange is going to happen soon. I do anyway. Perhaps a lot of people like to read those 'left behind' books because that's a Christian response to this feeling. There are some truly tragic desecrations and destructions of culture and knowledge that stand out in human history. Here's my short list:1) the Muslims destroying the surfaces of the pyramids at Giza in Egypt so they could use the limestone for their palaces for Mohammed2) the burning of the library at Alexandria by the Christians3) the Spanish burning all of the Mayan's ancient codex booklets and melting down all of the Aztec's priceless gold artifactsSo we see that no single religion or country had any monopoly on destroying knowledge and history. Bought it for my daughter to use in 8th grade band. Haven't heard anything negative and it is what the teacher required so must be good.

I use these books to warm up community band that I conduct nearly every rehearsal. The exercises prepare each musician comprehensively... and they are structured in such a way that no section is left bored while others focus on specific skills. The chorales in this book are BEAUTIFUL, and I really enjoy that the warm-ups go beyond the standard flat "band keys". All-together an indespensible book.

Much cheaper than what the school wanted to charge.

This was the perfect book for more advanced player

It was nothing like the picture represented. Don’t bother with this light. It didn’t work as a light or art, maybe a night light if you want something inconveniently sitting on your shelf, but it stopped working all together shortly after we got it.

Came fast & exactly what my daughter needed for her band class.

My son needed this for band. Found it here for a good price, shipped quickly, was exactly what we needed!

Kim ChamberlainFor band directors, private instrumental teachers and students, Foundations For Superior Performace: Warmup Techniques is a must have. I have used the warm ups, chorales, and scale studies with my advanced students and with my beginners as well. This book came to my attention when I visited the middle school band director of one of my clarinet students. It was obvious that the students in this band program were a step ahead of the rest. The warm-ups have a lot to do with this.Intonation, breathing and articulation are immediately addressed by using these exercises. I even purchased a trombone copy for my son and a flute copy for my daughter so we could play together at home. 5 stars for sure!

From the Back Cover

Ubiquitous computing (ubicomp) is about networked microprocessors embedded in everyday objects: not just cellphones and home appliances but also books, bookshelves, bus stops and bathtubs. This future is closer than you might imagine. The insecurity of networked PCs is notorious. If we deployed ubicomp systems as vulnerable as PCs, the risks for society would be catastrophic. How can we do better, and what are the new problems? In a very accessible style, this book provides a coherent framework to make sense of the many issues at stake. Features include: * An introduction to the state of the art in ubicomp research. * A readable primer on security and cryptology. * An up-to-date technical treatment of ubicomp security, including a sceptical look at Bluetooth and 802.11. * "Peer-to-peer" and ad-hoc networking. * An in-depth discussion of specific, cutting-edge solutions. * An extensively annotated bibliography. Security for Ubiquitous Computing combines clarity, brevity and authority. It will appeal to developers and researchers in ubiquitous computing, wireless and ad-hoc networking, wearable computing and related areas. Because it is readable and self-contained, it will also prove valuable to managers, analysts, technology watchers and end users who want to understand the new opportunities and risks of ubicomp.

Great for researchers and everyone who is interested in ubiquitous computing, which may very well be the future of computing. The book in general gives a high-level overview of available technology and security issues/requirements needed for this technology. One drawback is that the book will probably become obsolete after sometime as ubiquitous computing is evolving relatively fast..

When I was young, my parents had this book and used to (gently) demand that we "play" this book from time to time. It was always thought provoking and always an ice breaker.Fast forward to when I moved into my own apartment in college: they were delighted to dump many of their well-worn possessions--including this book--into my lap. I used this book many a time with new and old friends to get to know them better, both in college, in my 20s and beyond. It's a great after dinner activity at a dinner party when the conversation has lulled, because everybody gets to know a lot about everybody else and everybody seems to like it. The questions, a mix of "what would you do in this situation" and "what's more important to you: x or y?" and other psychological questions, are thought provoking and entertaining. Of course, there's no right or wrong answer and every time I've used the book, people have seemed to enjoy it quite a bit.I recently ordered this revised version and was really happy with the changes. First, there are more questions: 291, up from 217. Next, and perhaps more importantly, the "follow up" questions that some of the questions had have been moved from the back of the book to a light blue font below the relevant questions. This way, you don't have to clumsily flip back and forth and find the question number. It's a small change but a definite improvement. Finally, and most importantly, the questions are fresher, updated for today. In sum, if you already have The Book of Questions, I highly recommend buying the revised and updated version, and if you don't already haven't the Book of Questions, I highly recommend buying this revised and updated version and trying it out with your spouse, your family, your friends--it's a great way to get to know people and quite fun!

My now husband and I enjoyed a similar book of questions when we started dating. It allowed us to get to know each other with thought provoking questions while being long distance for 4 years. When we got married, I searched for a fun book of questions as a gift- Aa symbol of keeping our curiosity of the other alive. I was very excited about this book but it unfortunately won't be the fun book that we had in the past. Some of the questions are interesting and thought provoking, but there a quite a few (just from the pages I've read) that are just disturbing to sit with. One in particular asks how you'd feel murdering or torturing a child for the survival of humanity, and even expands it to ask how you'd feel if that child was yours. Some people out there might find these questions mind and consciousness expanding, but for us, it totally missed the mark. If you get this book, expect questions like that. And if those bother you, expect to flip through the book repeatedly to find questions that feel more "fun"I'll be exploring other books.

The Book of Questions: Revised and Updated by Gregory Stock is exactly what I expected and meets my needs perfectly! As a women's Ministry Director, I often create icebreaker questions for small groups. This book has some awesome ideas for building relationships, sharing and connecting hearts. It would also be useful for blogging topics, or dinner conversations with family and friends. Here are some sample questions:#073 Would you have one of your fingers surgically removed if it somehow guaranteed you immunity from all major diseases?#088 How often do you step back and reflect on where you are headed? Would less or more self-reflection be good for you?#120 Would you accept 2 million dollars to leave the country and never set foot in it again? What would be the minimum amount to seriously tempt you to take this step? You can't go wrong with this book...select from 290 different questions!

I thought this would be a book full of silly questions but was the exact opposite. Some are absurd but most will cause you to consider your current position in life and encourage change.

This is one way to get to know someone with out feeling like you are asking 100 questions. I had the original book many years ago and saw this new revised edition and I really like that its up to date. Great way to kill time while on a long road trip. Good book for pillow talk.

I bought this book after remembering an older version of it, however, I had lost the older version, so this was my choice. This book, like I said, is an updated version of Dr. Stock's previous edition of The Book of Questions. Some questions have been changed, some have just been updated for today's day and age, while other questions have remained the same. It's a great book to use when wanting to kill some time with friends, and get to know them a little better!

Great Seller! but book not as fun as the original version - seemed a little too moralistic, not that that is a bad thing... but the original book had questions I'd ask with any crowd - even strangers, whereas this book's questions can be more challenging and therefore could be off-putting to people I do not know as well, or who might be more challenged by the nature of the questions.

I am a firm believer that this book should be on every coffee table in the country. Too many times you see a family with everyone glued to devices. Open up some moral dialogue people.

This book helps you to make a decision as when to enter and exit a trade. It has a system to save you from the many dangerous pit falls in the trading world. As well it has enough illustrations and tips. Highly recommended

A Kids book, no trading techniques.

This book is a must read that I have read several times. The best book on the Forex market that's out here. I have spent more times trying to learn what to do than when I was regularly trading option in the stock market.

The strategy is great and can be executed with great potential for profitability. I have read a lot about Fibo levels and never quite understood it. After reading this book it became clear as day to me. Thanking you. Also I would like to know if one should only use the MACD strictly. For me the CCI is a more accurate indicator.

Amazing ! I read the book in one sitting and the logic makes sense to me. Very informative and detailed. The author made effort to explain and deliver practical tips. Let practice and get to the point. Thank you

Has many in depth tools that comes with the ebook to help place and exit trades. It goes step by step with images of how to find and manage a successful trade. A great book for beginners and experts.

This provides a strategy for trading that is similar to what I was doing but I believe this will make my trading more effective.

No hype good info well presented. Will take time to check it out.will take couple of readings to fully understand it.

I understand this book is nearly 40 years old, but for the definitive expert on salicylates it's completely inaccurate. The majority of these recipes contain foods very high in salicylates. Be warned if you have allergy like I do. Eating most of these recipes will make you sick.

good book, love the program, just not the kind of foods we cook as much, but we are unique in what we eat.

This is a great book. It helped a lot with figuring out what to eat and what to eliminate. Plus it gave recipes.

About 30 years ago I put my son on this diet. Within a week I had people asking what I had done because he was like a different child. I had given my book away many many years ago. I ordered this copy for a friend.

A must for anyone who has hyperactive children with ADD or ADD. I suggest the book called WHY CAN'T MY CHILD BEHAVE also. I was in theFEINGOLD PROGRAM and this really makes a difference in child behavior

Good book

This book is out of print, however if you have a child who is hyper or you have an ADD problem, you should consider The Feingold Diet/Cookbook. The theory is that artificial colors and flavors cause an allergic reaction resulting in behaviour such as lack of sustained attention/coffee nerves/easily distracted but a diet of natural ingredients allows your body to function evenly. No meds! Try it.

It's great to have Feingold friendly recipes but unfortunately the book is old and therefore has unacceptable ingredients in some of them--such as Crisco.
