By matching a plant’s needs with available spaces, gardeners can maximize the potential of their land, as well as their harvests. Foodscaping is the creative integration of edibles among ornamentals in a traditional landscape.Pairing vegetables, fruits and herbs with shrubs, grasses and trees is nothing new. The concept of purposeful landscapes has been around since the 1970s. Rosalind Creasy, a pioneer in the field, penned more than 20 books about edible landscaping. She encourages gardeners to be open-minded and adventurous. For example, during the growing season, visitors will discover rice and wheat growing in her front yard. The practice earned her a nickname of which she’s proud: Grain Lady. Growing your own veggies reduces food miles, which is the distance a product travels from origin to consumer. “A grocery store has an average of 1,500 food miles per product,” Arthur said. In effect, local foodscaping supports global sustainability. “Diverse plants support diverse entomology, too,” Arthur said. She referenced gardeners’ tendency to overplant a vegetable in one predetermined area. The lack of diversity invites disease and destructive pests, as well as lower yields. Conversely, diversity supports pollination and natural pest control.Striking curb appealArthur’s gardens also demonstrate that foodscaping doesn’t trade beauty for bounty. “I have a zero-tolerance policy for ugly plants,” she said. Love this concept and am reading this book carefully in order to plan my own edible garden (a rehab of a nice but kind of boring ornamental one). Solid information in a useful format. Seems like it's aimed at people with no gardening experience to moderate gardening experience-- which is just my demographic so it's a good level for me. Definitely recommend it-- will try to review properly when I'm finished reading.

Brie is such a great motivational speaker I knew her book would not disappoint. Although I did a mini version of foodscaping many years ago as a 20 sonething with a new townhouse, my methods were haphazard. I love the zone system Brie explains. Its practical and so easy. I ve started with arugula and lettuce near our front door and will expand as it warms up here in the NC mountains. Her photographs are beautiful as well. Her book is a great gift for gardening friends and family.my husband Gary ordered Brie's book for me so his name is listed but I am the reader/ gardener.Shirley Phillips

Not all of it applies to everywhere everyone lives but it's a good general guideline book. I was hoping to read about beneficial nematodes but couldn't find anything on them since the author deals with a former tobacco farm and only had destructive nematodes. We also make our own earthworm compost in bins, we never have it trucked in, that way we'll know what's in it. I do suggest this book.

I first heard about the book when I had the privilege of meeting Brie at a foodscaping conference and immediately ordered a presale copy. I'm so glad I did because since receiving my book it's been so useful in helping me grow edibles among my established suburban yard! I love all the colorful photos especially the ones Brie included of her own yard.

In a suburban garden, why not incorporate form with function? Your spot of heaven on earth can produce beauty and fresh home-grown herbs, vegetables, fruits and herbs. Brie Arthur's book, "Foodscape Revolution" provides the map to cleverly add bonus food plants in with your blooming beauty queen ornamental's, "how-to" garden hints and tips, recipes, party plan ideas for mature crops and more. I have soooo many page flags inserted in my copy. At the end of the book you just wish you were neighbors with Brie Arthur. Great book to read, reference and find garden inspiration!p.s. follow Brie on Facebook too - I love and learn so much by reading her weekly posts.

This is a fabulous book with great tidbits on growing food in any landscape, including suburban HOA situations. Include food and beauty into your landscape. It is packed full of great info and great resources. I highly recommend this book for anyone who EATS FOOD!

I saw the author on a gardening show and was impressed with her there, so bought the book. It has lots of great advice about how to fit edible plants into your flower borders and landscaping. Even though we live in very different plant hardiness zones, her advice will still work for me. A few of the plants she recommends will not grow in eastern Canada, but most of them will. I can hardly wait for spring so I can get started planting veggies in with my flowers and replacing my boring foundation plantings with berry bushes.

I got this book the first day it came out. Great book, easy read, informative. I plan on using some of the ideas this summer!

This book is not for the skirmish but for those who are honesty looking to see God in the midst of our sufferings. If you like how Max Lucado, writes Steve Estes has a comparable writing style to him. Joni poses hard questions about how God deals with our sufferings and what is His agenda by allowing them to happen. I particularly like how she uses other people's trials to explain her points. This book was instrumental in helping me deal with my wife's cancer and eventual passing and where was God in it. So a shout to Joni and Steve for the book.

In 1999, I became disabled with chronic pain. I was so angry with God, I didn't talk to him for two years. I don't buy that "we don't always know God's plan" line given to people who go through horrible things. He is, and therefore, He is omnipotent. My disability had a reason. I also don't buy "God's ways are mysterious." Not usually. He did tell us how He does things. I'm just not that good at figuring it out.In the beginning of this book, Joni said not to read it if you're still angry. I did anyway. My heart softened through the book. (The most often quoted Bible verse that's not in the Bible, nor is it connected to the Bible.) God helps them who need it. We ll need it.The day I remember that may be the day the chronic pain disappears. I've lived the life of Jonah. He's got a lot of work to do in me before that day hits. Thank God, He got His message into a couple of his kids so they can teach the rest of us, who needed this message. A must-read, for anyone who has ever asked God, "Why me?"

This book has changed my life. I never understood why a loving God allows suffering to those who don't "deserve" it. Joni and her co-author Steve Estes write in a clear, down to earth, sometimes humorous, sometimes heart breaking narrative that makes God real to me. I understand His character like I never did before. I realize that I am here for reasons that transcend the world view of a persons' value.My husband and I read it aloud together and it opened our eyes to the larger picture of our story within God's plan for us. We as caretakers and chronically ill, it is inspiring and helpful!

Incredible sharing about suffering, pain and problems written by one who has been and continues to walk through those hard places (Joni is a quadriplegic.) She has learned what it means to trust the Lord for meaning, direction and daily confidence in God's plan for life. I have read this book many times. Sometimes straight through, other times starting in the middle of the book according to my need at the time. I have underlined the parts that I want to easily go back to and remember and the Bible verses that are particularly significant. I have learned what the Sovereignty of God means for those who trust Him.

The Holy Spirit spoke to me through this book. The expression, "When we pray, we speak to God: but when we read, God speaks to us" is most definitely my experience with this book. After reading "When God Weeps', I truly understand that all my earthly sufferings are for my good and the greater good of others, if I trust in God. I now look upon my adversities as blessings because they lead me to this book along with an intense deepening of my faith. I have read numerous books, too many to count, trying to understand why my life, from childhood on, was riddled with abuse, betrayal, grief and loneliness. After reading "When God Weeps", I need not read another book other than the bible. I will be purchasing many copies of this book to give to friends, family members, and enemies who are suffering and questioning their faith. Thank you to the authors of "When God Weeps" for allowing the Holy Spirit to speak through you....God bless you both!

This best work on suffering I have ever read. Steve and Joni unpack first hand a personal walk through suffering as they have strive to make meaning of the suffering thru the lens of the bible. They have done a commendable job helping folks like me in need of a biblical peek understanding the meaning of suffering as I walk with my family down the road of leukemia. I buy this style of cook book to get my own creative juices flowing to create recipes & methods to take food on the road and trail and eat much better than using pre-packaged commerical products. You'd be amazed at not only the higher quality of foods but also better prices and better taste can be had with some care and prep in advance. Another source are the make a meal in a jar books for gifting. They too use a lot of freeze dried vegi's and fruits and powdered eggs and real cheese powdered and whole grain pastas so you can make omlets or egg dishes and pancakes with fruits as well as hearty soups and pasta dishes or to die for taco's and mexican meals. Go vegi only or add meats. These books get you there..it's up to you to take it to the highest level. What I like most...you can avoid too much salt or worse the hidden salt in pre-made mixes or foods. Though I rarely follow a specific recipe through on any cook book including these and this one...I found a few worth giving a try in the A fork in the Trail. Some are just so interesting and novel and as their own words state...mouthwatering meals and tempting treats...oh yeah they seem to have me under their spell. Trouble this year is our summer is coming very late to the area. High country is still blocked out due to snow. Can't even hike the not so high what most of us think as local morning or day hikes due to snow chutes blocking the trails.....this time of year? Then again Going to the Sun Road hasn't opened in Glacier Park either and it's July and that's only 120 miles from our back door too. Rivers to high to float still....dang it. The recipes might be worth fixing right here in our own back yard just cause:))) They sound that good. This one is a keeper and I'm something of an expert on feeding people well in all sorts of carry your own food circumstances...cars/planes/trains/bikes/foot/kayaks....fill you up. I recommend to anyone who likes to eat well on the road or impress others along too.

I have purchased many backpack food books in the past. I liked this book, but it is not my favorite. I found some recipes that I have tried and liked. Others that I am still wanting to try. I am not into backcountry oven cooking. I did not find that part of the book useful. Maybe if I do more car camping I will try some of those recipes.

GREAT BOOK. I highly recommend it. I have made many recipes. She opened my eyes to safely make my own backpacking food that includes MEAT... crazy good stuff.

More for camping and short trips I thought, than full backpacking. Nice recipes

Professor Raymond Kevorkian's "The Armenian Genocide" is a truly magnificent, seminal book, and a work of first-rate scholarship. It's likely this book will be seen and respected as the Armenian equivalent of Professor Raul Hilberg's definitive and towering study of the Holocaust, "The Destruction of the European Jews," a book I read many years ago and was blown away by. I had the same feelings of awe reading this book as I did when I read Hilberg's massive 3-volume study. And while the Armenian Genocide is a subject that I feel I have understood fairly well, I am stunned by how much I learned reading this book. So this is proving to be an epic journey of discovery for me, and as painful as the subject matter is, this book is an amazing achievement in every way.It took me three months to finish reading Professor Kevorkian's book. The fact is, it's a 1,500 page book masquerading as a 1,000 page book (800 pages of texts, 200 pages of footnotes). The font is smaller than one typically sees in a book, and the pages themselves seem to have smaller margins and more text than usual. But any way you cut it, Professor Kevorkian's book is a remarkable achievement in every way. While he has levels of detail that seem hard to imagine possible (down to the names of families deported in many communities--and it shocked me that I found my maternal grandmother's mother's family's name listed as one of the families that was put on a certain convoy on a specific date), and the names of the local leaders, organizers, and individuals responsible for the atrocities and mass murders in many of these same communities), none of these details obscures the larger story that Kevorkian tells--and he really tells a story masterfully. Like Raul Hillberg does in his three-volume Holocaust masterwork, "The Destruction of the European Jews," Kevorkian tells a story with a clear narrative, and doesn't just overwhelm you with facts, statistics, and information. I am astonished at what Professor Kevorkian has achieved with this book. It's a lifetime's work, and it's magnificent in every way.More shocking to me was how much I learned--and I come to this subject fairly well informed to start with. There were revelations after revelations for me, and as difficult as the book was to read given its subject matter and intensity, I never came close to losing interest in it (even as reading it was a project due to its length, depth, and breadth). Here are just a few of the things that I learned specifically:1. I had no idea that within the Young Turk movement before the Ittihadists took power, there were two completely different factions within the party with very different ideas for how to reform Turkey if/when the the Ittihadists came to power, with one group believing that only de-centralization would lead to renewal, growth and economic and cultural development, whereas the other group believed that it was necessary to centralize, consolidate power, and drive change from the center (and you can guess which faction won out). It's stunning to contemplate how much different history would have been had the de-centralists prevailed. This is one of those rare moments in history where one can see there was a critical fork in the road, and had the other direction been chosen, so much would be so different, avoiding all the death, suffering, pain, and loss that resulted.2. The deportations were not carried out with the same murderous ferocity across Turkey. The six Armenian vilayets of Eastern Turkey (Asia Minor), i.e. historic Armenia, were treated in the most brutal way possible, and miniscule percentages of the people survived the death marches. But the deportations of the Armenians from Anatolia (west of the six vilayets, and not part of historical Armenia) were far less murderously brutal, though by no means could they be classified as anything but "brutal." But far larger percentages of the Armenians deported from Anatolia survived the death marches to the deserts--where most were later massacred in a second-wave of Turkish genocidal attacks in 1916.3. While most communities were rendered defenseless by the Turks and not in a position to offer resistance (and mostly did not), in fact, Armenians did fight back on several occasions. We of course all know of the resistance at Van and Musa Dagh, but scattered throughout this story are other stories where the Armenians fought back. While in most situations the outcomes ended in complete disaster for the Armenians, nonetheless, they fought back as best they were capable of. This moved me. The Armenian resistance in Urfa was especially emotional for me, because the Armenians fought back heroically even if in the end they were still destroyed.4. There was only one sanctuary for Armenians in all of Turkey: Dersim. A mountainous area that the Turks did not control and which was inhabited by nomadic Kurds, Dersim served as a refuge for massacre survivors who managed their way to it. I did not read anything that suggested that the Armenians knew that Dersim would be a safe place for them, although they obviously had to know it was a region that Turkey did not control. It appears that many who managed to escape to Dersim survived and were taken in by the Kurds. The Turks even tried to negotiate with the Kurdish leaders to give up the Armenians, but the Kurds refused and the Turks could not do anything about it because they did not control the area--the only part of Turkey they did not control, and never had.5. I never realized the extent to which the Turks tortured their victims before killing them. It was so hard to read and understand this, because while I was aware of the brutality of the massacres, the details were shocking. Grigoris Balakian, in his astonishing book "Armenian Golgotha" (Armenian Golgotha (Vintage)) gets into it to some degree, but there's far more detail in Professor Kevorkian's book. And it's not for the squeamish. When you think about how the Germans murdered the Jews during the Holocaust--methodically, efficiently, and unemotionally, just simply putting people to death in the most impersonal and efficient way possible, the Turkish approach was nearly the opposite. The Turks routinely tortured their victims before killing them, dismembered them while they were alive, and killed them in the most brutal ways imaginable that caused the most possible pain before death. I don't mean to sound naive, but it is just hard for me to understand how any human beings who KNEW they were going to kill a lot of other people were capable of doing it in the most painful way possible for the victims. What is this telling us? Who were these people?6. Professor Kevorkian puts forward a theory which is well argued by the evidence, and it makes sense, but it was something I had never heard argued before, and it shocked me. We know that many young Armenian girls (but not young boys) were taken from the deportation caravans by local families and raised as Turks. Professor Kevorkian establishes that in fact this was something encouraged by the authorities. Talaat had a lot of admiration for the Armenians, their skills, and their capabilities (and there is a quote that Professor Kevorkian provides in which Talaat admiringly indicates that the Armenians are more capable than the Turks). While Talaat was pathologically opposed to an Armenian identity existing within Turkey, he was hoping to take a small number of Armenians and raise them as Turks, and ultimately "improving" the Turkish race in this manner--but only through the introduction of women, not men, because by societal norms, women were subservient. Talaat was not seeking genetic purity per se with the elimination of the Armenians (as the Germans were during the Nazi era), but rather, national purity--there was no room for an "Armenian" identity, only a Turkish one. But clearly the Ittihadists were engaged in an experiment of "genetic improvement" of Turks through incorporation of a limited Armenian gene pool influx, albeit shorn of its ethnic identity. This is shocking to me.If it's not already clear, let me indicate that "The Armenian Genocide" is not for the casual reader. But if you are interested in the subject matter, and truly want to understand what happened before, during, and after the Genocide, I have never read anything better--or anything close to this good. By any standards, this is a seminal work, and a magnificent achievement in every respect.

Prof. Kevorkian's book is a must have for those interested in the history of the Armenian Genocide.

This book is an exhaustive study, using various archival materials, as well as his own mass collection, the author has written a definitive history of the Armenian genocide. Any serious student of the subject will find this book invaluable.

This book is chock full of examples of genocide all across Western Armenia committed by the Young Turk Party and it's collaborators.I had a hard time putting this book down once I started reading it....the author has done a every extensive and informative documentation of the displacement, destruction and theft of the Armenians, their buildings, economy, savings, commerce, churches, businessex, schools and human life in their ancestral homelands.

Excellent reference work by an accomplished historian.
