Can be used for AP as well as college level micro 101 course. Good book with great details and a few examples. Even a little back part for definitions, test review and tips. For AP, you can at least score a 3 with this book as long as you read it and memorize it. Very simple.The formulas can be a little confusing, especially if you were taught another way by you teacher/professor. Not hard to figure out though.

The Crash Course books were excellent for my son to review for his AP exams. Like most teenagers he waited until the last minute to really review and this book was perfect because it condensed down exactly what he needed to know and skipped what he didn't. Also loved the way the books are organized. We will be buying all the crash course books for the AP classes he's taking next year.

Awesome book! If there were graphs/curves/laws/ideas that you didn't understand while taking the class, this review book explains them really well. I read through this book just days before the test, and all my shaky understandings were cleared up; I got a 5. Good and concise.

I bought these books the last couple years for my AP tests. Crash course books are usually my go tos when it comes to studying for them. They go over the major concepts without crowding with information. These books are great for procrastinators like me who wait until the last two days to study for their APs. However, I would only use these books for review since they are quite short and do not go super in depth into all the topics. As for the results, I ended up getting 5s and 4s on my exams.

This book has been a great help in my quest to get 5 on the AP test. It has a great skeleton of all the topics that will be on the test and makes sure to cover some little details that can be the difference between a 4 and a 5. These books are great for any AP class and I recommend any AP uses this resource for the burden of that class will be greatly alleviated.

Extremely useful guide. It provides all the information needed to get ready for class and AP testing.

This book definitely helped out on giving me quick review for the AP Macro exam. The only reason why I give it a four instead of five, is that I felt it skimped on some topics that actually came up on the test much more frequently than what the book seemed to suggest, but overall, the examples were very good and concise, and the range of topics it covered was accurate.

I've never read anything from Nigel Calder and have obviously missed this timely author on a subject most all of us sailors need more assistance. Hardbound by McGraw-Hill it is an enduring and sharp looking production. Replete with fine line drawings and sharp photographs, it is attractive to thumb through and simple to find data with a well stepped-out and rational Contents section and a helpful Index to balance the book's intent of helping the Sailor do his or her maintenance correctly. His attention to marshaling detail in an accessible manual simplifies the complexities and gives the reader confidence to attend to the things needed for sustaining our old diesel engines aboard.

Even as a veteran master marine mechanic, but unfortunately only in gasoline engines, I had the feeling that I could learn something from this book.....and I was correct!I remember that many many...to many :) .....years ago, as a young student, while attending the Marine Mechanic's course at our local Technical Institute, the instructor gave us the following advice:If you know the basics in engine mechanics and you have a set of quality tools, I should be able to give you A SERVICE MANUAL, and any of you should be able to go out there and even repair a helicopter.Ladies and Gentlemen....THIS IS ONE MANUAL for diesel engines that you want to own!Now go out there and do not be afraid to fail....

This is a good intro to small diesels, especially outdated ones you find on old boats. The writing is readable and easy-to-follow. The pictures could be much better. A mechanic friend who uses it to teach seminars said it contains several pieces of inaccurate info in the troubleshooting tables. Overall, his other books (Boatowner's Mechanical and Electrical Manual) is a better deal since it contains most of the same material and then some.

The definitive layman's guide to marine diesels.The book explains how the engine work so that the details on how to diagnose and fix them makes sense. If you own, run or operate a sailboat with a diesel engine, this will be some the best money you ever spent and may save you hundreds of time the investment made on this book.

Buy this book, read it from cover to cover, then keep it onboard for reference. That way, when something goes wrong and you are far from any help or assistance, you will be able to handle the problem and get home. That has happened to me already and this book has paid for itself many times over. The investment is invaluable. I highly recommend this book and I would go so far as to say your marine diesel engine is incomplete without this book to go with it.

If you are a marine diesel owner, but not yet a marine diesel mechanic, this book is great to have on board. The farther you travel from shore, the more invaluable this book can be.

I'm at a bit of a loss on how to review this. It's a great reference, BUT if you already have Calder's Boatowner's Mechanical and Electrical Manual: How to Maintain, Repair, and Improve Your Boat's Essential Systems (referred to my most cruisers just as "Calder"), this book does not add a lot that's not covered there. If you already own Boatowner's Mechanical and Electrical Manual: How to Maintain, Repair, and Improve Your Boat's Essential Systems, I'd recommend getting a book by a different author on the diesel as there's a greater likelihood of one of them having just the piece of information you need. My suggestion of an alternative:Troubleshooting Marine DieselsOther reviews have covered this book in detail, plus there's a new edition out, so I won't go into further detail.

Just got this book and a week later, while stuck in a windless bay, my engine suddenly died. Of course this only happens when you are anchorless, motoring through islands and shoals with a nice hunk of shore that is covered in rocks, and half a dozen icons on the navigation chart of sunken boats. (Somehow the fates know when you are trying to sneak by unnoticed.)Luckily we happened to start drifting through a cargo channel that was blessedly void of any cargo ships, or anyone at all except a small pod of porpoise. We had a good thirty minutes to break open this book and trouble shoot the engine. This book gave us the guide lines we needed to quickly and successfully diagnose our problem and get the engine back to limping. Not only that but this book has guided us through the month of repairing all sorts of things, fixing the starter, along with recognizing a few things that previous owners have jerry-rigged. In a month this book has already paid for itself many times over and now our old crusty engine sounds better and runs better. This book is a must, without it, my first mate and I would have never been able to turn a potentially deadly trip into just a few minutes of stress.

I keep fearing that the author my release his last book. However he fails to disappoint. Another classic covering virtually every topic is melded into a patch work of short offerings to The New Yorker length articles. Having been watched by Albert Einstein while playing soccer to discussing the NBA with Bill Bradley, the author has experienced an endless range of persons, personalities, and topics for his musings. If you are true John McPhee fan (I have yet to read 2 of his books) then the most accurate review is to say that the author "strikes again" and "fails to disappoint." Enjoy the exploration into another of John McPhee's offerings. PS: I will never look at a female Cardinal like I use to.

I long ago promised that I would read anything John McPhee wrote, if he would just keep writing. For my trouble, I learned more about that damn fish than I ever wanted to know, but I read it all. I didn't think I would care for the second half of this book, which consists of many brief, unconnected bits of narrative and description. But I did. Very much. It raised this question: why in prospect did it seem in any way unacceptable for a nonfiction writer to present several isolated pieces as a tour de force when a photographer / sculptor / painter might do the same (as in a gallery or a portfolio) without prompting a single raised eyebrow? In retrospect, I think, "Why not?" This works. And it's really neat.

I love John McPhee's writing. But these snippets of larger pieces leave me unsatisfied; where's the rest? There's enough material hidden here for another half dozen books, which I hope to read, in full, in the near future.

So, of course I took the book. I got it a couple days ago and just finished it today.Lovely. The book is essentially a memoir, told through prose patches and resurrected scratches. Pieces that have been overlooked or published and never reprinted were culled, edited, and sewn together (at 87, there is a lot of past prose to examine).Part I of the book contains six sporting essays that range from fishing for pickerel in New Hampshire (The Patch), to chasing errant golf balls (The Orange Trooper), to golf at St. Andrews (Linksland and Bottle), to coach Bill Tierney (Princeton's and later Denver's) championship lacrosse coach (Pioneer).Part II is essentially a collection of small pieces (some just a paragraph, others several pages) that seem random. They span McPhee's interests and curiosities from people, to places, to science, sports, and errata. It is only as these patches come together that you begin to realize McPhee is essentially taking you on a trip through his memory as a writer, a father, and a person. McPhee's talent as a writer bubbles up, but so too does McPhee's essential humanity. I read books to escape, but I also read books to feel. It's been a long time since a story has truly made me feel so much. It started with The Villain and grew even more intense in The Dove. I don't think I have ever both loved and hated a character so much as Adam. I thought he was brutal in The Villain, but he outdoes himself in this book. He almost gets to the point of no return, but in usual Adam form, he catches you off guard. Daphne surprised me just as much as Adam. What she is able to endure is amazing and her growth as a character is my favorite. I can't even begin to list the range of emotions I felt while reading this and not just from our hero and heroine. Niall and Olivia tore at my heart strings, and I can't wait to see what the future has in store for them. And then there's Robert, he's so sweet and caring, and I love what he brought to the story. All of these characters and facets come together to create such an emotionally beautiful read. It really shows you what lengths people will go through for what they believe in and love. It's heartbreaking, gut wrenching and most of all satisfying. Victoria Vale creates timeless characters and settings that will forever imprint themselves on your heart. This is certainly a duo of books that I will treasure and come back to time and time again.

This becomes a must read after you've read the first book in this duology. It doesn't disappoint especially with regard to the two principal characters, Adam and Daphne. My criticisms of the duology are that this book ends rather abruptly and without dealing with the fate of three characters who do play important roles in both books: Niall, Adam's manservant, Olivia, Adam's very much harmed cousin, and her child, Serena. I could certainly be wrong, but my guess is that Victoria Vale submitted her manuscript and was asked to write a bit more indicating what happened to Adam and Daphne and she did so, writing about what happened a year after she and Adam returned to his castle after their marriage. But Niall, Olivia, and Serena also live there and their fate is of interest (at least to me). One other criticism is that Daphne played the harp in both books, but she was injured toward the end of the second book. It's not clear whether she was able to continue to play after her injury. She and Adam enjoyed playing instruments together, she on the harp and he on the piano.

Given the intrigue presented at the end of the first book in this duet, The Villain, I was compelled to read on into this the second book, The Dove. I was even more delighted with this book than the first. To be sure…I was sufficiently delighted, entertained and found the Lord Adam Callahan, Earl of Hartmoor delectably swoon worthy in the first book. I also enjoyed the fiery, loving and passionate…but principled where it counts…heroine, Lady Daphne Fairchild.In this book we find that Lady Daphne has been paid handsomely for her month-long virginal, sexual surrender to Lord Hartmoor as they agreed. She had come to feel that she belonged with Adam in the light of the revelations regarding his motives in pursuing the downfall of the male members of the Fairchild family, her compatibility with him in so many interests and her increasing desire for all the physical delights she finds in his arms. Dare I say she was also falling in love with him? She was summarily dismissed from Hartmoor and brought back to her father and brother in London. Feeling betrayed by both her father and brother in addition to being spurned by Adam, she set about making a home for herself and hoped to gradually find a place in London society.It is a familiar trope that Adam, despite his resolve, could not get the lovely Daphne out of his mind…his dreams…his desires…his system. So, it’s off to London for him. He tries to tell himself he needs to go to London because he is not finished with his revenge on Daphne’s brother. A fervid dance of desire, denial, unrealized emotion and daring dreams begins as Adam pursues his singular need to own what he has claimed as “his” and to hold her close…Lady Daphne.Frustrating Adam in his pursuit of her is Daphne’s realization that she needs more from Adam than his claim of ownership, although she enjoys all that this entails…she needs more... his fidelity and his love. Daphne also fears that her Fairchild linage will always be a barrier to true and lasting love with Adam. As she comes to truly care for him and his family, Daphne worries about Adam’s determined pursuit of revenge on her brother. Her worries are not for the fate of her brother but for the emotional and spiritual toll it is taking on Adam. Moreover, she feels like a pawn in Adam’s plans in taking vengeance out on her brother.Ultimately, Daphne is willing to forgo all her desire for love in a traditional commitment and be whatever Adam wants if he would only choose her instead of pursuing vengeance. An explosive situation forces Adam to make his choice. Yet, his choice doesn’t exactly bring about the hoped for and longed for result. Even so…is it evident that our swoon-worthy hero finds himself overwhelmingly out-of-his-element besotted by our heroine?The writing itself is suitably stylistic for the genre. The story is told in third-person alternating POV’s with well-written dialogue and character reflections at appropriate times contributing to a near seamless flow in the narrative. I would be seriously neglectful if I didn’t mention what a divine dirty-talker our hero Adam is… adding so much ardency to the spellbinding erotic love scenes.Oh…it is just the right kind of “stuff” for which romance junkies live. Once again, this particular Regency era romance is peppered with the darker power-exchange elements that some (perhaps more than some? 😎) readers find decidedly exciting.As for who would enjoy this duet? I’ll say it once again… you know who you are!!!Quotes:“Even after the mess he’d made of her life, after the things her father and brother had done, a part of her remained untouched and pure. Did she truly believe there was any good left in him—that he even had a soul worth redeeming?”“You stupid little thing. You do not want this … my love isn’t the kind that nurtures or soothes. It’s the kind that hurts. The kind that destroys things. It’s the kind that consumes you until there’s nothing left.”

I adored the first book. I loved how Adam straddled the line between good and evil. His light shows through his love and loyalty toward Olivia and Serena. His darkness shows through his exploitation of Daphne. She becomes a drug to him, however. He is aware of the fact that Daphne is not at fault for her brother’s actions, but can’t bring himself to stop tormenting her. And torment her he does, even though he cares for her and becomes protective of her.The ending disappointed me tremendously. SPOILER******:After everything that Adam put Daphne through, she took a bullet for him and he left her when she disclosed her love for him. WHAT!? I wanted to throw my Kindle! I wanted to see him grovel, atone for all of his abuses toward her. Instead he leaves her under the guise of setting her free because he supposedly believes that’s what is best for her. He leaves her wounded and weeping, broken completely. He sends another man to propose to her! I couldn’t forgive Adam after this. Daphne then CHASES Adam to win him back! I loved everything about the books except this. Adam should’ve been the one to atone and make it right, not Daphne. I still loved the books, but I laid awake and rewrote the ending in my head before I fell asleep! Adam wasn’t redeemable to me otherwise!

Nice intro to flamenco with a few interesting photos.

I am both a flamenco dancer and photographer. I am luke warm about this book. The layout was poor--the text was too wordy and the pictures seemed more like calendar art than fine art photographs. I owned this book for a month before selling it to a local book store. My advice is keep searching there must be better books out there.

I am new to flamenco. I have read Emma Martinez's book "Flamenco" which flooded me with information! Great book! This book is a good source too and gave me some information that Martinez's lack. One example, that Hindu dancers where entertaining in Spanish courts around 500 B.C.! The author highlights the similarities of flamenco, bullfighting, and the Mass as the "Holy Trinity" of Spanish culture with good points. And another parallel with Greek tragedyl. The reading is interesting and the photographs are great!One Amazon critic is disappointed that Juan Serrano is not mentioned but the book is not solely based on flamenco guitar and hence many great players are not mentioned. But it does cover a lot of ground regarding flamenco dance, song, guitar, history and tradition. I would recommend it. The only reason why I don't give it a 5 star rating is because I am biased and wanted to know a lot more about the guitar players too! But there are plenty of other sources for that.

I'm thrilled to find a book published so recently (2000) that does such a tremendous job of covering the topic both factually and aesthetically. Reviewer Jennifer Guerra has said it all, so I'll not repeat. For you art lovers, just take a look at the first few photographs. The rest do not disappoint. This coffee-table sized, lavishly illustrated book presents a gorgeous panorama of flamenco in Spain, from its origins with the Gypsies of Andalucia to the modern Nuevo Flamenco movement. The text is thorough, comprehensive, and supremely interesting. Edwards' style flows nicely among the many photographs, never failing to follow this engaging detail or that, and always presenting the art of Flamenco in its truest light: from artists to its impact upon Spanish culture. Words cannot adequately express the beauty of Haas's photographs; the man deserves at least an extra hundred pages. Dancers whirl in blurs of light and fabric; ancient cantadores sing with all the passion of their soul; a pair of Gypsies laugh and play guitar in the light of a barrel-fire. Haas effectively - and gorgeously - captures the very heart of Flamenco in his photos. The book is further enhanced by a number of smaller, black-and-white, historic photos and illustrations, bringing the masters of the past to life. The Haas/Edwards Flamenco is worth more than its price for the photographs alone. They are lush, seductive, and captivating, even if one has no particular interest in flamenco as an art. Miraculously, the prose comes very close to living up to the photographs it accompanies. It's a careful, accurate account of the development of flamenco. If your flamenco shelf has room for only two books, they should be Donn Pohren's Art of Flamenco, for the encyclopedia and the "insider's" view, and this one for the overall story and the pictures that capture the art so well.

I just cannot believe that the Maestro Juan Serrano from Spain hailed as "The King of Flamenco Guitar" was nowhere to be found in this book. Whoever did the research really missed out. I have had the pleasure of seeing Juan Serrano perform on two continents. He is a master who has played Carnegie Hall, Washington, D.C. and received numerous accolades from many countries, including Spain. Maestro Serrano has even brought Flamenco guitar and teaching to the university level in the U.S.A. and writes teaching books through MelBay, Inc. About the best I can say about this book is that they had a good idea with some nice photos, but did an incomplete job. I am a true fan of many guitarists including Paco de Lucia and Paco Pena, but this omission is almost unbelievable.

If you like latin dance and Spanish culture, you will adore Flamenco! The photos and text blend together to provide a sensitive and in-depth look at this centuries-old art form. A marvelous book on the topic, professionally done in every way. I am delighted with it.
