If you’ve always wanted your own collection of, say, skulls, shrunken heads, anatomy specimens, or serial-killer souvenirs but can’t really afford it (or your spouse or your Mum won’t let you bring such things in the house), this is the book for you. It showcases 17 modern American (I think) collectors of “the uncommon and the bizarre” and their collections, with a full-page picture of each collector and around 15 photos of items from his or her collection. All photos are in color; some are full-page size, other half or quarter page. Text consists of two pages on each collector, answering such expected questions as How did you start collecting, What is your favorite piece, and What would you say to people who find this kind of object scary or disgusting; each picture from the collections is also captioned. Themes that appear frequently include the importance of such items as unappreciated aspects of history and an interest in the way that cultures in different times and places have responded to death. My only complaint about the book is that I wish it had been larger than its approximately 8x10” size so that the pictures could have been even bigger.If you do like this sort of thing, I also recommend Viktor Wynd’s Cabinet of Wonders (which does have larger dimensions, and includes collections in addition to Wynd’s); Paul Koudounaris, The Empire of Death: A Cultural History of Ossuariies and Charnel Houses; and Patrick Mauries, Cabinets of Curiosities (historic collections that included, but also usually went beyond, the bizarre or morbid to include a wide range of specimens from nature and art).

First, the physical book is beautiful. Heavy stock, edged in black, is a joy to touch and turn. Rather than interrupt the flow with glossy plates, the photos are beautifully printed on the same stock in matte, which suits the mood of the book.The text is brief but informative. It's clear each subject was asked the same set of questions, but they are good questions, so I looked forward to each answer. I tend to skim text and descriptions, but I read each and every word of this book. Delicious from start to finish.If you are a fan of Oddities, you will recognize some folks. If you love dark things, there is something here for you.

Such a diverse and amazing collection of uniquely nteresting people and the "odd" things they collect. One of my personal favorites is the feature on Mik Miller! What a fascinating life he has led and to think he almost ended up as the entree! Lots and lots of detailed photos. You won't be disappointed.

Here's a book the has the opportunity to be a really interesting book. Looking through, I saw that at least 3 of collectors are from a TV show "Oddities" Which is OK I guess. I thought "oh boy, more details on these folks" - not. My biggest objection is that the photos are so blurry as to be annoyingly useless. Then there's the print, which such a small font that I cannot read it even with my bifocals. I got this for my wife for Yule. What an embarrassingly disappointing book.

No oddity/curiosity book will be big enough or hold enough content to satisfy everyone. However, this book is very good quality. It has a kitschy look to it for display. The content is very good. It gives some insight not only into the items, but into the people who collect them and I think that is just as important. The photos are well presented and there's information about each one, not a bunch of pictures thrown in with nothing.Bottom line, if you're looking for an introduction to collecting oddities or you're just curious, etc.... This is a nice little book.

I also enjoyed Ms. Mgboli's writing style, and her eloquence but simplicity in getting points across.I do wish the book went more in-depth. Key points (attract, seduce, etc) were stated as being important, but then the next key point was discussed. For me, this book was more about how to get into the mindset of a courtesan and to prepare yourself for dating at this level.

Even if what you desire isn't wealth, this book impressed upon women the importance of putting ourselves first - of being selfish so that we might fill our own cups so that they overflow to fill others'. This book I put on par with Napoleon Hill's iconic Think And Grow Rich. But it is geared towards women, it is much shorter, and much easier to understand.It is, in my opinion, essential reading for all women. When we treat ourselves and our dreams with respect and love, those things come back to us tenfold in the form of blessings.

Ms. Mgboli does a superb job of capsulizing all the info out there on understanding and utilizing Feminine Energy (aka/ Power, Essence, whatever one chooses to call it).Make no mistake: Although she focuses on 4 courtesans in relatively modern human existence, these naturally-occurring behaviors of said human existence have effected/shaped reality since the first two humans (a man and a very different, but complementary, woman) interacted/transacted.Internalized and allowed to, this is a definite life-changer for the brave and fed up - ready to stop accepting their own excuses and finally live the life they were created to - forever.It’s so good, I recommended this book after barely getting to Chapter 2 (which took enormous self-discipline, as she had me at the Introduction’s first two paragraphs). However, I finished the book (in one sitting) and am so impressed - I am writing a rare review (and at 4AM, no less, ha!)

This book is excellent to improve how you see yourself as an individual and how you see yourself as a woman within a society.

I enjoyed reading this book. The information was rare and valuable. I was not aware of these women and they definitely were not among our history books in grade school.

Employees have been observed in huddles with their hands in the middle counting to three, and mocking union stewards by shouting "They can do that" as they break away from the huddle. Funny for a minute, but a serious concern. Labor unions are supposed to be strong and not have excuses for inaction.After reading Mr. Clark's superb book I concur with what he wrote about the importance of attitudes: "People's behaviors are shaped by their attitudes. Behavioral science has concluded that individuals are not born with their attitudes in place; rather, attitudes are developed by the influences, information, and experiences to which people are exposed." That remains true for union membership.I also love the example at the end of the book "Member files a grievance that presents a steward with a chance to educate the member about the important role the union plays in bringing due process to the workplace."Most importantly I agree with the fact that there needs to be a new emphasis on "Organizing" as opposed to "Servicing." Find out what these terms really mean inside the manuscript.We need co-creators of union power. Labor unions need to become much more than, Contracts-R-Us, a dues collector, and a grievance machine.This is a book for every union member to get onboard. At a minnimum union leaders need to get this book and start conducting training, and implementing the ideas that are so professionally presented.
